Andrew Sullivan Freak-Out Advisory: Chagrined

The president's press conference last night was, I think, perhaps his best ever. He was confident, in command of the facts, moderate in his views, engaging and appealing. It was much better than anything we've seen in a very long time; and it makes me wonder why his handlers keep him in such hermetically-sealed partisan settings. He's better than that; and it seems to me he keeps getting better in these contexts. ... I doubt it will shift the public mood, which is souring on the Republican hegemony. But it certainly reassured me that he is trying to tack away from the extreme right.

But compare with last night's:

Banning new books in public libraries that feature any gay characters or are written by gay authors? There are no theocratic tendencies among the Republicans, are there? ... The guy wanted to ban some Shakespeare. But Capote, Wilde, Auden, Proust and who knows who else will be barred. Government as the protector of souls. What are these "hysterics" worrying about "theocratic impulses" going on about?

And today's praise of Derbyshire, for being brave enough to agree with him on "theocracy:"

But I'm glad to see that not everyone at NRO has been drinking the big moral government Kool-Aid.

That's why the Sully Freak-Out Advisory can never drop below Chagrined. Even when he's reassured, he's still terribly, terribly concerned about the forces of Theocracy and Oppression.

From "Filled With Heart-Ache at Such Gobsmacking Vileness" to "Chagrined" in just 24 hours?

Well, as the title of my in-the-works TV sitcom says, That's My Sully!

The guy has more severe ups and downs than the Anaconda at Busch Gardens.

PS: There's still a war on, you know.

"But it certainly reassured me that he is trying to tack away from the extreme right"

Bush=Judas!

"But it certainly reassured me....

Because Christ knows that the most important thing in all of this is to make sure that Sully is reassured. He must not be alarmed or discomfited in any way.

W.'s first task while drafting a speech is to think, "But how will this affect Andrew? Will it make him happy? Will he be gobsmaked at the utter vileness of it all?"

The “big moral government Kool-Aid”? Is that the seven-foot high, leering Pitcher which bursts through walls of thirsty children’s rooms and chases them through the house? Think of Sully’s heart-ache as he drowns in the artificially sweetened and colored goodness.

Batman: "To coin a phrase, there's less here than meets the eye."

Eh. I don't think adopting the Cedartroll's fake-reasonable tone to separate out Bush from the Source of All Evil (in this case, the "extreme right") shows much.

His inner freakout is still running wild, just with a better disguise.

Certain peopleseem to take a perverse delight in being offended by anything and everything. Some even make a living at it.

Posted by: compos mentis on April 29, 2005 02:49 PM

Not sullivan. Lord knows, he's not the easiest person to offend.

Tonight, on a Very Special "That's My Sully":

Andrew encounters his estranged father (G. Gordon Liddy) at a local convenience store, the Boyfriend (Noah Wylie) orders the wrong kind of hammock.

"The president's press conference last night was, I think, perhaps his best ever."

This is pretty crappy writing. 13 words, 3 of which ("I think, perhaps") were hedges.

I think the thing that annoys me the most about Sullivan is that he belongs to that group of people who repeatedly attempt to take the high ground by disguising their own version of morality within a definition of amorality. He approvingly cites Derbyshire's comment on wanting to be left alone by government, indicating that he has a similar inclination.

But is this really what Sullivan is after? If so, what difference does it make if government does or does not sanction his marriage?

Anyway, this just reminds me of liberal friends who fail to see the irony and inconsistency in arguing that government shouldn't impose someone else's morality on them, while simultaneously arguing that government should raise taxes so that more money can be spent on programs for "the poor" or "the children".

These people frustrate me the most because they'll complain about the "religious right" and then turn around and argue in favor of banning smoking in bars or argue that McDonald's be obligated to sell salads.

That last post was mine.

How about, "Has more ups and downs than a rodeo cowboy on bareback?"

Posted by: tom scott on April 29, 2005 05:23 PM

a little TOO descriptive, tom

Posted by: hobgoblin on April 29, 2005 05:54 PM

that was gob-smackingly vile.

yeah, I know. it's a tired joke. I don't do this for a living.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on April 29, 2005 07:41 PM

Whatever, Sullivan is still gay, right? How's that working for ya, champ?

Posted by: rho on April 30, 2005 12:22 AM

Time to raise the alert. Sully is on the rampage about fundamentalism watch.

I imagine this article might give good ol' Excitable Andy a few palpitations. (h/t RCP)

The Anaconda is at Paramount's Kings Dominion, not Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

What's this with the gay-book banning? Any case where people try to cut out a broad subset Y of X, when the rest of X is OK, especially if determining what falls inside Y is subjective, tends to stick in my craw. It's the first I've heard.
