This is pretty crappy writing. 13 words, 3 of which ("I think, perhaps") were hedges.

I think the thing that annoys me the most about Sullivan is that he belongs to that group of people who repeatedly attempt to take the high ground by disguising their own version of morality within a definition of amorality. He approvingly cites Derbyshire's comment on wanting to be left alone by government, indicating that he has a similar inclination.

But is this really what Sullivan is after? If so, what difference does it make if government does or does not sanction his marriage?

Anyway, this just reminds me of liberal friends who fail to see the irony and inconsistency in arguing that government shouldn't impose someone else's morality on them, while simultaneously arguing that government should raise taxes so that more money can be spent on programs for "the poor" or "the children".

These people frustrate me the most because they'll complain about the "religious right" and then turn around and argue in favor of banning smoking in bars or argue that McDonald's be obligated to sell salads.

That last post was mine.

What's this with the gay-book banning? Any case where people try to cut out a broad subset Y of X, when the rest of X is OK, especially if determining what falls inside Y is subjective, tends to stick in my craw. It's the first I've heard.
