Hangin' Up the Spurs?Jeff and Bill seem to be making noises about quitting their radio show. Jeff seems to be suggesting he's going to stop blogging entirely. I hope Karol and I aren't completely awful on the Internet cough "radio." Our basic plan is to just go in there and discover we're natural broadcasters. We don't have a Plan B, so if Plan A goes into the shitter, we may be hangin' up our spurs two or three weeks from now, too. Not Quite Retired Update: Jeff says he's just going to be taking it easier. posted by Ace at 12:09 PM
CommentsAw, geez. Not this shit again. Posted by: Mob on April 29, 2005 12:16 PM
Is April "Threaten to quit" month or something. I must have missed the memo. The month began with the april fool's joke gone wrong and ends with a preemptive quitting of the radio gig. Posted by: Max Power on April 29, 2005 12:16 PM
Jeff seems to be suggesting he's going to stop blogging entirely. Just hoping you got the names reversed. Posted by: Old Coot on April 29, 2005 12:19 PM
I thought Jeff had already gone on hiatus. And now he's not coming back? And Old Coot, aren't you supposed to be off stalking somebody? :) Later, Posted by: bbeck on April 29, 2005 12:25 PM
Actually the show went well. The stress comes from lining up the guests and making sure they show up each week. And I'm not quitting posting. Just taking it easier for a bit. Which, considering the minimalism of my posts to begin with will hardly even register to the naked eye. Posted by: Jeff G on April 29, 2005 12:29 PM
I thought it was a “bit.” Jeff, Bill and guests put on an amusing show: commence negative comments. Jeff pretends to be wounded and flounces off. Protein Wisdom fans rush in and give Jeff "buck up, little camper" speeches. Followed closely by passhole/aggresshole posters taunting Bill into throwing his crap into the mix. Which of course he does. ‘Cause he’s Bill. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Posted by: Nordicgirl on April 29, 2005 12:47 PM
Seems kind of ironic that Jeff is (understandably) a little tired of getting pissed on for his radio efforts, and right now some of his regulars are engaging in a regular whizz-fest with Jeff and Bill—mostly Bill—as the guests of honor. And Jeff has the nice commentors. (N.b.: I spend very little time at his site.) Hopefully Ace’s regulars will cut him and Karol a little slack in their radio efforts. At least at the outset. As long as they’re not totally, provokingly sucky. Posted by: utron on April 29, 2005 12:48 PM
IMHO, it is a very vocal minority that does the verbal pissing. Posted by: carin on April 29, 2005 12:55 PM
I listened to Hugh Hewitt, Michael Medved, and Laura Inghram the other day...what seems to work for all of them is that they actually let the show be about the guests and the people who call in. Posted by: Nathan on April 29, 2005 01:10 PM
Trust me, we know that. And we are very determined not to be scripted. We will have prepared questions for guests and maybe a few bullet-points, but, for example, we won't be sharing those with each other, so the reaction to each other will be fresh and unrehearsed. We're not going to force jokes. We are going to let the guest be the star. Unless they're a bit of a dud. Posted by: ace on April 29, 2005 01:16 PM
May take a week off the show. It's harder than I imagined, to line up the guests, do the research, write the bits and questions, all for only an hour per week (mostly because it's on top of my 1.5 paying gigs). When Howard Stern bitches that doing a daily radio show for all those hours is really hard, I believe him. Not to say that it's extraordinarily hard to do a one hour show, but it's a bit of work, and it don't exactly pay well. I mean, unless you like getting paid in random compliments and vitriolic insults from a bunch of random internet people. Someone tell me where I can spend that currency. (Perhaps it'll buy me a roll in the sack with Old Coot's old lady, but really, what wouldn't?) That being said, it's also fun, Ace. Depends where you want to go with it. Media empire? Fun pastime? Streaming internet radio groupies? Getting close to Karol in a tight little radio booth? The possibilities are what you make it. BTW, Nordicgirl's comment isn't completely right, but it's prescient enough. Posted by: Bill from INDC on April 29, 2005 01:23 PM
Actually the show went well. The stress comes from lining up the guests and making sure they show up each week. Jeff asked for people to help with that and a few of us did offer. But SOMEONE must have vetoed that idea. Too bad. I would have enjoyed doing it and I have time to do it. Now that I think about it, I think I need to get a real job. Posted by: Rightwingsparkle on April 29, 2005 01:55 PM
bebeck: Nah, just an occasional well-deserved needle. Posted by: Old Coot on April 29, 2005 02:02 PM
Ace, you WILL do pre-interviews, though, right? Even the pros do that much and it likely would have helped you on the other show. I would think that the concern wouldn't be that you over-rehearsed but rather that you weren't prepared. Later, Posted by: bbeck on April 29, 2005 02:02 PM
Old Coot, more like an acupuncture from where I sit, but I get your point. Later, Posted by: bbeck on April 29, 2005 02:03 PM
Bbeck, Yes, that is the producer's worry, too. We will do pre-interviews... lightly. I will find out what is most animating them, what they really want to talk about, and then Karol and I will bone up on that so we can ask interesting questions. Posted by: ace on April 29, 2005 02:04 PM
Hopefully Ace’s regulars will cut him and Karol a little slack in their radio efforts. Utron: You're kidding, right? The only reason we are regulars here is so that we can find reasons to call each other retards. If you weren't such a retard you would have noticed that by now. Posted by: Michael on April 29, 2005 02:37 PM
I am not a retard! I AM A PERSON!! Wait, was that volume-inappropriate? Posted by: utron on April 29, 2005 03:24 PM

Robin: "Gosh, Batman, is there anything you don't know?" Batman: "Oh yes, Robin. Several things, in fact." Posted by: Hulk on April 29, 2005 03:47 PM

Joker: "Who are you calling?" Catwoman: "Lucky Pierre. The world's greatest and luckiest criminal attorney. He's never lost a case." Batman: "Is it a toll call?" Posted by: Cherry Blossom on April 29, 2005 03:50 PM
When is the first Ace and Karol show? Exactly what kind of guest is gotten? And for Bill & Jeff's hour, what is the estimated number of listeners at any given time? I'll hang up now and listen to your answers. Posted by: Hoke on April 30, 2005 06:16 PM
