Another Stunner: Chris Matthews Doesn't Like the Church, Either

RCL sends:

MATTHEWS: You want the numbers? Sixty percent of American Catholics want women to become priests.'

MOLINARI: Right.

MATTHEWS: Allowed to become. Sixty-five percent want priests to marry; 65%. And everybody I know in my church where I go thinks that...

From an exchange between Chris Matthews and Susan Molinari

Matthews isn't doing so well in the ratings, either:

Matthews, a onetime aide to Jimmy Carter and Tip O'Neill, isn't sure why "Hardball" ratings -- the program is averaging 379,000 viewers -- are down by about two-thirds from their late-1990s peak...."You walk down Fifth Avenue, people come up and say they love me."

From a profile in Peace Corps Online. Man, Matthews will never let us forget he's a 1) good Catholic 2) former cop 3) former aide to Tip O'Neill 4) former Peace Corps draft dodger selfless volunteer 5) crusading liberal crapweasel.

Captain's Quarters makes the obvious, but necessary, point:

The quote regarding his confusion over his dismal ratings when everyone on NY's Fifth Avenue loves him was widely mocked, demonstrating his constricted, rarefied world view from the Upper East Side elitist cocoon (reminiscent "of the cluelessness of Pauline Kael, who exclaimed her disbelief about Nixon's landslide re-election: "No one I know voted for him!")

And finally, RCL offers his own take:

Could you imagine the blow to the Church if both [He Who Shall Not Be Named] AND Matthews were to act their conscience and leave the Faith? The Church would be rudderless, having nothing but millennial-old tradition and doctrine, and the beliefs of mere (slightly over) 1 billion faithful to sustain it.

Frightening times indeed.

Without doubt, a grave danger for the Church. I hope they realize the terrible, reckless gamble they're taking.

Politics makes whores of us all, it is said.

But it's worse than that. "Whores," well, that's understandable.

But politics makes blithering idiots out of a lot of us, and that's less forgivable.

Anyone see the NYT article (I know, I know, but I was only there looking for directions on how to get AWAY from there) with the interviews of the Belgian theology students?

They said (paraphrasing): "We don't want to hear about sin. We live our lives freely, following our conscience."

As Leather Penguin said: BennyOne-Six don't play that shtick.

Gee, less of Chrissy -what a blow!
Pope Benedict XVI speaks of a smaller church-in essence telling people like Matthews to "bug off" if they can't act like "adults in faith".
B-16 is the man to educate children like Chrissy, or to hold the door open for them to leave.

Maureen Dowd's latest offering is incomprehensibly lame. I was gobsmacked.

Posted by: Knemon on April 23, 2005 02:37 PM

I am also glad the cardinals didn't go for a flip-flop Pope that makes doctrine according to liberal popularity polls.

Actually I saw an interview with a cardinal or bishop yesterday saying he hopes the Pope might come around to allowing divorced people to receive Holy Communion. I think that would be good, but then it kind of contradicts the weight and emphasis the Catholic Church puts on marriage. As long as it wasn't something that would undermine the importance of commitment in marriage, I think it's good. It would mean a lot to devout Catholics who have divorced. I am in favor of being able to divorce as long as serious effort is made to work things out in troubled marriage. But marriage can't be a prison.

I think Pope Benedict is going to surprise many people, in more ways than one. I differ with him on the question of married priests. I think the Catholic Church would be much better off if it were like the Jewish faith/practice in that sense, rabbis should be married, it's much better, but they can, in certain exceptions (I believe) be single.

That pile of neurosis that shan't be named and his blog fans were wishing the Pope dead already, but, although I've never followed Ratzinger closely, he just doesn't strike me as frail as everyone keeps saying about his health. Who knows...

Why do lapsed Catholics, to a person, all think they are experts on the Church?

This just goes to show that the MSM does not understand what religion is for. They think its for feeling good now. They can't comprehend that it has a different purpose entirely.

Matthew is a shrill egomaniacal idiot. I'm certain everyone he knows watches him and he only has disdain for those who don't.

I'm ready for him to go away, but he'll only be replaced by another egomaniacal idiot who hopefully will be less shrill.

Also watch how HWINTBN tries to claim the "modern" Catholic label for himself and all his fellow travelers. Unfortunately his true label is heretic.
They keep arguing that they can define what being Catholic means. As if its meaning is something that is subject to change. Talk about arrogance.

Posted by: Iblis on April 23, 2005 04:06 PM

The one point I don't agree with is the preist-marriage thing. It would only help if they were allowed to marry, in my opinion.

I'll be pissed if Matthews is cancelled - I already lost "Mr. Show With Bob and Dave"

Why the concern over communion for the divorced? you can always just get an annulment like John F'n Kerry and various Kennedys?

Posted by: holdfast on April 24, 2005 12:13 AM

As a Staten Islander who knew Susie in her younger days, and has observed her marriage trevails, the very idea of her and "Catholic" being in the same zip code--nevermind sentence-- is bloody hysterical. A conversation on the the topic with little "Miss Roadhouse"? Obscene.

Posted by: TC@LeatherPenguin on April 24, 2005 03:07 AM

Benedict XVI is presiding over the mass that will officially install him as Pope as I type this.

Now, I'm not the theologian that Andr--uh, sorry--HWINTBN--is, but I'm sure at least part of the Pope's homily will be deemed "gob-smackingly vile."

UPDATE: He reached out to the Jews (Aha! I knew this guy was a Rovian neocon plant!), asked Catholics to pray for him (selfish jerk!), and--get this--actually mentioned Christ!

Get ready for a return to the middle ages, folks.

Posted by: Sean M. on April 24, 2005 05:43 AM

I'll tell you why Matthews' ratings are down: because he only asks rhetorical questions in that he appears to be either unable, unwilling, or incapable of asking a question and then STFU long enough for the guest to answer.

As for Catholicism, memo to Ameri-Catholics: it ain't a friggin' democracy! The Pope does not care about your opinion on female priests, preists marrying, divorce, abortion, and birth control. He seeks instruction and guidance from GOD and GOD only.

So either suck it up and be a good Catholic or go start your own gig - like Martin Luther did, oh these many years ago.

What too many steves said...ditto. Matthews is a bad joke.

Posted by: BobG on April 24, 2005 08:45 AM

re: divorced catholics.

You can get legally divorced and still receive Communion, as long as you don't remarry. If I'm not mistaken, even if you are legally divorced, you are still married in the eyes of the Church and as long as you don't sin (i.e. get married outside the Church), you can continue to receive the Sacraments.

If this is true and it sounds like it is what it is, then I hope the Pope and the Vatican are brought to Justice.

Ratzinger Implicated In Sex Crime Cover Up: Did Pope Benedict XVI Obstruct Justice?

Breaking News by Dan Riehl

The signature of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger is on a confidential letter defending the Church's right to conduct secret investigations into alleged sexual abuse cases and keep the information confidential up to ten years after the victims had reached adulthood. The letter was sent to all Roman Catholic Bishops in May, 2001.

The letter states that the church's jurisdiction 'begins to run from the day when the minor has completed the 18th year of age' and lasts for 10 years.

According to the Ratzinger letter anyone revealing confidential information from the investigations could be subject to discipline up to and including excommunication.

When approached for comment the Vatican press office had no comment as it claimed the letter was not a public document.

The letter is referred to in documents relating to a lawsuit filed earlier this year against a church in Texas and Ratzinger on behalf of two alleged abuse victims. By sending the letter, lawyers acting for the alleged victims claim the cardinal conspired to obstruct justice.
