Note To Self: Don't Insult Guests During Interviews

What happens when Michele from ASV, Jeff Goldstein, and Bill from InDC get together on Rightalk?

It's the train wreck I wanted to deliver but didn't quite manage.

The beginning is sort of boring. But just stay with it. Don't worry; it's not long. It ends with a longer string of f-bombs than I intended and then a hang-up.

Eeeeesh.

Prank? Not sure.

Survey Says: Punk'd. The comments at Michele's seem a little more lighthearted and flirty than one would expect after a bona fide on-air meltdown.

Note to self: Idea to start off show with wacky radio pranks will have to wait.

For a couple of weeks.

Little Yellow Man In My Head Update: Parody of my appearance on last week's show...?

There's a voice in my head that tells me sometimes "Ace, everything is not about you," but I tend not to listen. Because he's got some sort of an agenda and he's out to get me.

This bumper music is suicide inducing. T-minus 4 minutes and counting.

typical for those two

Ace, the link you provided just gave me a talk show with 3 women, and none of them were Malkin.

Eeeeesh.

Don't you mean Cheeeesh, dorko?

Posted by: mean little punk on April 21, 2005 06:31 PM

I dunno. I listened and kinda leaning toward that whole thing being a bit' Maybe just saying that outta that never wanna be the unhipster that doesn't 'get it' but the theme was about possible schism on the right. If it wasn't a bit, that 'jew' line she tossed out was dicey stuff, but damn good radio, I say. Too much nicey-nice in the media. Letterman was always at his best with Pekar, I say.

Was a pretty good show otherwise even if was a bit. The Schivo stuff with 'balloon juice' guy was interesting and sorta what I was hoping for with the Ace interview.

Posted by: Ray Midge on April 21, 2005 06:36 PM

Woooah.

Posted by: See-Dubya on April 21, 2005 06:55 PM

I always suspected that ASV was a nutjob. This confirmed it.

Time to up the Zoloft/Xanax/Lithium dosage.

I guess the anti-semetic bitch needed to run back to her worthless website to post another "Top 80's Albums" list.

Boring. Stop boring us, ASV.

Posted by: sonofnixon on April 21, 2005 06:56 PM

That was F***ing awesome. Did she say something about jews? Honestly, I was laughing too hard to notice. And that surly new-yorker accent just makes it.

If it wasn't a prank, she really needs a sense of humour transplant.

Posted by: Bill on April 21, 2005 06:56 PM

I loved the last interview . Outstanding show.

Posted by: Donnah on April 21, 2005 06:58 PM

The line isn't working for me . . .

I guess the anti-semetic bitch needed to run back to her worthless website to post another "Top 80's Albums" list.

I haven't listened to the show but I read the comments at Jeff's place and can almost guarantee you that it was a bit. For one thing, Michele's not anti-Semitic; she wouldn't use "Jew" pejoratively unless it was part of a goof. Which it must have been, or else Jeff would be blogging up a storm about it even now. (And rightly so.)

Also, weren't all the F-bombs bleeped out? That makes me think it was pre-recorded, which is what you'd want to do if you had a bit like this planned. Give yourself an opportunity to edit, or even redo it, later.

I think they pulled an Andy Kaufman on you and did a damn fine job of it, too. Let's at least hold off on the accusations of anti-Semitism when the matter is in doubt, okay?

Posted by: Allah on April 21, 2005 07:10 PM

the F-bombs could have been the result of a wizard on the three-second delay button. But I think if Ace got dropped for a few "dicks", well...this would have been shut down much quicker.

Given that Michele, I'm certain, knows that Jeff and I guess Bill (I'm not sure about that one) are both atheist conservatives themselves (I know that and I don't even have a blog)...

...it's a goof. and a darn good one.

Posted by: See-Dubya on April 21, 2005 07:38 PM

Doing a bit with a made up anti-semitic character can be pulled off. Doing it with a known entity does not work.

Posted by: on April 21, 2005 07:43 PM

I'm listening to it now and everything she said was being read off something. It's gotta be a joke.

Posted by: Jason Edwards on April 21, 2005 07:48 PM

I think they punked us.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on April 21, 2005 07:57 PM

Both Michele and Jeff have said that the show was pre-recorded. Whether it was a gag or not, well, everyone seems to be being a little coy about that. But I agree with Allah that Michele probably wouldn't have made the "Jew partner" remark unless it was a joke.

Posted by: Sean M. on April 21, 2005 08:00 PM

I vote for gag. MIchele's been too light in her criticism of Bill and Jeff if it wasn't- and she's not normally one to "hold back."

Posted by: carin on April 21, 2005 08:32 PM

It wasn't even a "punking"

Too obvious. Then the little pretend insults going back and forth between Miss Michelle and JG.

Amateur.

Posted by: on April 21, 2005 08:44 PM

I've seen people go off worse than that because they couldn't figure out how to work the Xerox machine.

Posted by: Donnah on April 21, 2005 08:45 PM

When it takes this much effort to determine whether it is a gag or not -- IT'S NOT FUNNY.

Posted by: on April 21, 2005 09:03 PM

Well, I'm getting this goopy hippy-lite AOR musical theme, punctuated by "the next Righttalk radio program begins at five minutes past the hour." In other words, I'm on hold!

Posted by: Andrea Harris on April 21, 2005 09:04 PM

I still say that ASV is a nutjob.

Posted by: sonofnixon on April 21, 2005 09:10 PM

OK it's on. Well, Jeff G doesn't sound like I thought he'd sound. He's almost... mild. Bill fINDC sounds like kind of loathsome, which raises his cred in my eyes.

I want the swearing to begin.

Bill should not try to imitate other people. That's just sad.

Wince wince wince.

Come on, bring on "devout atheist" Michele.

Looking at my watch. Oh wait -- I'm not wearing a watch.

So far I have heard every single cliché on the net: "conservative firebrand," "South Park Republican," etc. Hold out your hands for a wristslap, gentlemen.

So this is why I never listen to talk radio.

How many times have they both (Mutt 'n' Jeff) said the word "filthy"? Find another word. "Dirty" and "smutty" haven't been overused.

Bill's Spanish accent isn't too bad for a gringo. Or a Hispanic-American -- I have no idea.

(In case I have gotten the voices of both these guys mixed up, because I have trouble with things like that, just switch the names in your mind as you read.)

They are interviewing John Cole from Balloon Juice. He sounds just a little bit like Cliff from Cheers. A younger, non-Boston-accented Cliff.

Wow, the death of Terri Schiavo has caused more psychic damage among the Freethinking, Freedom-loving libertarians than among us Rightwing Theothugs. Did you know that criticizing the judiciary makes Baby Jesus (who doesn't exist anyway) cry?

"Panties in a bunch" -- now there is a mental image of John Cole that I didn't need.

I dunno about government staying out of my bathroom and kitchen etc. I need the apartment cleaned up and considering that I paid taxes this year it's the government's turn to get out the mop and the Pinesol.

Still with poor Terri. And belief in a higher power is great as long as it doesn't interfere with anything important, like killing braindamaged people.

"Blogosphere" sounds positively hideous said out loud.

I agree that "Instapilate" was silly. Like Glenn Reynolds had the power of life and death over anything.

Blah blah fucking blah -- I'm tired of Mr. Cole. Where's the screaming, swearing harridan of Long Island?

Nice of Bill and/or Jeff to play "Devil's advocate" and say that putting to death a braindamaged woman could be seen as bad from a non-religious viewpoint.

So, Randall Terry keyed Cole's car or something?

Pffft. Forget it, I'm bored. Signing off.

Posted by: Andrea Harris on April 21, 2005 09:21 PM

Wait, Andrea is bored, jaded, bitchy, mean, and pissing on what other people do?

Now there's something I never would have thought I'd live to see.

Posted by: Jeff G on April 21, 2005 09:29 PM

Hold on, Jeff...

(Digs around in purse. Pulls out slightly crumpled -- but clean! Well, except for that marinara sauce stain -- hey it was a white blouse) tissue. Extends it to the sad crying man.)

Here you go. Dry those eyes! Now don't say I never gave you nuthin'.

Posted by: Andrea Harris on April 21, 2005 09:35 PM

Andrea was pretty funny!

Posted by: on April 21, 2005 09:35 PM

And you are...?

Posted by: Andrea Harris on April 21, 2005 09:40 PM

Now, now. Let's not attack Jeff and Bill.

I certainly do not want any controversy or drama or feuding which could increase my traffic and create buzz about the upcoming show.

So seriously-- just stop it. I want no more of this.

(Well, it worked for Hitler. Why not me? Why. Not. Me.)

Posted by: ace on April 21, 2005 09:41 PM

Keep it, Andrea. The sunshine you bring into people's live seach day with your good cheer is plenty of gift for me.

Posted by: Jeff G on April 21, 2005 09:51 PM

I'm all about the giving! I give and I give and I give. I just can't help it.

Posted by: Andrea Harris on April 21, 2005 09:52 PM

I'm listening to the show now.

Will everyone who cannot tell that all three of them are reading off of a script please raise their hand(s).

They introduce Michele and without so much as a hello she launches into a 45-second run-on sentence, sounding like a charicature of a bad. Then J and B make constant references to the phrases and analogies she used in her off-the-cuff remarks.

I cannot believe anyone is actually wondering whether or not this thing was planned.

Puh-lease.

Posted by: on April 21, 2005 09:54 PM

*charicature of a bad actor.

Posted by: on April 21, 2005 09:56 PM

Pretty piss poor.

If it was real (and I think it was), then the hosts need to learn some manners and Michele needs an hour of "time out."

If it was fake, well, it was boring all the same.

Posted by: Blain on April 21, 2005 10:11 PM

Heh, I thought it rocked. (Finally got to hear it.) It was like a breath of fresh air* after the sludgy interview with Cole.

*Well, something air.

Posted by: Andrea Harris on April 21, 2005 10:21 PM

I just want to know if the New York accent was faked too, because ..oh boy... I thought my southern accent was bad.

Posted by: Rightwingsparkle on April 21, 2005 11:20 PM

Well, the show pretty much confirmed by opinion of John Cole.

If you snuck up behind him and said "Look! A Christian!" he'd immediately froth at the mouth like one of Pavlov's Hydrophobic Dogs.

I swear I haven't read a person who has a biger hardon against religious people playing in the public square since the last vaporous Andrew Sullivan screed.

Posted by: Jimmie on April 22, 2005 12:02 AM

Will everyone who cannot tell that all three of them are reading off of a script please raise their hand(s).

Actually anonymous, there was no script, unless by "script" you mean, "reading an outline of interview questions that are written down." This is standard procedure, in many interviews, I assure you.

Posted by: Bill from INDC on April 22, 2005 09:50 AM

Bill from INDC if you're trying to say that Michelle wasn't reading that run-on sentence after her introduction then you're making an ass out of yourself. No surprise.

And if you're trying to say that the whole scenario wasn't planned ahead of time you're making a big ass out of yourself.

Posted by: on April 22, 2005 01:02 PM

Well, anonymous, we've done this segment 3 times, and each time, the guest is introduced and reads an opening piece -- ala an NPR "report". Val Prieto did it last week; this week, Michele read an abstract from a longer blog piece. So in that sense it was "scripted," though Michele wrote her own "script" to read.

Beyond that, no script. And no rehearsal.

Posted by: Jeff G on April 22, 2005 01:28 PM

My Gosh anon - you're really so dumb that you couldn't grasp the format? Can't you get NPR reception with your head up your ass?

Posted by: Bill from INDC on April 22, 2005 01:39 PM

You guys think a primarily libertarian/conservative audience will understand all the nuances of NPR's format? That's like quizzing Oliver Willis about the South Beach Diet.

Anyway, the big-name radio guys always at least briefly review what their recurring segments are before going into them. It only needs to be a few words, and it makes the show much more listener-friendly. Val was introduced as "he'll be reading a piece". Just do that again next time and you'll be set. Rightalk will be syndicated on 2000 stations and supermodels will knock on your door.

PS: Get Allah on sometime.

Posted by: Ian S. on April 22, 2005 02:53 PM

Ian - I heard a number once, that actually a LOT of conservatives listen to NPR. It's new program is very good (it's all the opinion and fluff pieces that make me pull my hair out - although they are almost ALWAYS extremely well done and entertaining.) That, imho, is the difference between many liberals and conservatives. My mother (liberal) has never EVER listen to Rush, or Medved, or watched Foxnews ... where as I have actually read, listened and/or watched all of her news sources. I do draw the line at Tavis Smiley, though.

Posted by: carin on April 22, 2005 03:13 PM

Hey Ian -

Anyway, the big-name radio guys always at least briefly review what their recurring segments are before going into them.

Like this?

"One of the things we'll be exploring here at the Citizen Journalist report is the makeup of the current conservative movement -- long thought to be the province of rich white captains of industry and their trustfund spawn, and stay-at-home Moms who keep vodka bottles hidden in the linen closet, and who spend much of the time they aren't drunk or numb on prescription opiates reveling in the glory of their years as Magnolia queen.

But this is no longer the case. And to that end we'll be introducing a series of non-traditional conservative correspondents, who will be offering their perspectives on the goings on in modern-day conservative.

This afternoon we'd like to welcome writer and author of the website Beautiful Atrocities.com, Jeff Percifield, who will shed some light on what he calls a jihad against gay conservatives in Washington. "

Or this?

"As part of a continuing effort here on the Citizen Journalist report to explore the makeup of the current conservative movement - at one time thought to be the playground of ultra-wealthy business magnates who liked their wine expensive, their hookers cheap (exotic, nut brown), and their Jews in shadow, craftily massaging the corporate ledgers - we'll be introducing you to a series of non-traditional conservative correspondents, who will be offering THEIR perspectives on the goings on in modern-day conservative movement.

This afternoon, we'd like to welcome Val Prieto, writer and editor of the influential Miami-based Babalu Blog - which specializes in Cuban issues -- who will be reading a piece that will illuminate the world of the los conservadores marrones."

Do you want me to dig up Michele's intro too?

Posted by: Bill from INDC on April 22, 2005 04:15 PM

Didn't listen to the show, but it sounds like from the previous comments that I provided some fodder.

I accept snail mail with check/money order or Paypal for compensation.
