New York May Lose 2 Congressional Seats and Electoral Votes in 2010

And it's strange to say this, but I join with every other conservative New Yorker (there are eight of us; not even enough to field a softball team without inviting in a couple of libertarians who only ever want to talk about smoking pot in lighthouses) in saying, "I'm hoping we lose five."

A Plea From New Yorkers

Take our votes away from us before we do some serious harm. We're f'n' bonkers.

"On the other hand, Albany gerrymandering will ensure that these are Republican seats..."

Pro: Democrats get 2 fewer Electoral College votes.

Con: Republicans lose two seats in the House, where they have a (moderately) comfortable majority.

Nope, still a gain for the GOP. Even if the House was split 50-50, I think anyone in either party would be willing to trade a couple of seats there for an advantage in the EC.

Posted by: Pompous on April 21, 2005 04:53 PM

And yes, I know the House can't be split evenly (except under certain multi-party solutions that have no bearing in the real world, Bernard Sanders notwithstanding).

Pooter

Just felt like saying that.

Pompous, even if the Dems are still in control in Albany after 2010 and can still gerrymander the redistricting--both pretty big ifs, IMHO--the seats are going to go to places like Utah.

And Utah will elect one more Republican house member. That's not an "if"--I'd bet one of my kidneys on that.

Posted by: utron on April 21, 2005 05:28 PM

Eh, those votes will probably end up moving out here to California (like everyone else does) so that we can elect a couple more Henry Waxman or Barbara Lee-types. Won't that be a hoot?

Posted by: Sean M. on April 21, 2005 06:13 PM

Utron - absolutely right about Utah. The Democratic party isn't even in sight here - a truly weird situation for someone who used to live in Cook County.

The first Friday of each month a bunch of us travel from Babylon, L. I. to Staten Island. You can tell which ones are Democrats by the time we get back home. We're all smiling and thier jaws are tight.

Posted by: Dennis on April 21, 2005 11:54 PM

Tight jaws on Dem types.

Pat Moynihan here, and i'm stoked!!

Haunting the nasty carcass of Hellary Rotten Clinton is not enough to assuage my mournful spirit. The more she uses the great state of NY for her own evil ends, the more i will put up a spirited defense.

Ace will be my psychic channel to the blogworld.
So be sure to hit his tip jar.
I may even offer psychic readings and predictions from time to time for generous Deathcard devotees

Signing off nowwww....ommm shanti ommmm

Yeah, it's kinda annoying being a conservative in NYC... except while conservatives control Congress and the liberals go around shrieking like mad fishwives... I swear, one can get high off the vibe. I think I may die of Schadenfreude.

Living up there for three months this summer proved to me there ARE plenty of conservatives, but then we were up in Orange County living on Camp Buckner and doing our drinking in every bar between USMA and Newburgh.

It's like my naitive MD. A zillion red counties, but the three blue ones are heavily populated enough to tip the scales.
