Mary Mapes, Victim of Coordinated Sexual Assault

Well, this idiot said it, not me. She claims to have been the victim of a "wilding" attack, which, for those of you who don't live in New York means...

Ah, what am I saying. It doesn't matter if you live in New York or not. The rest of you guys are our media bitches. A pidgeon doesn't sneeze here in NY without us cramming that breaking news down your flyover-country slack-jawed throats.

And I make no apologies for that. That's the one thing about media bias I like. You should know every damn thing that happens in New York, because, damnit, we're just that f'n' important.

Anyway. Where was I? Oh yeah. This "Mapes"... person.

The Anchoress says she obtained a bit of the treatment for Mapes' upcoming book (which, you know, is going to stiff worse than man dead from a Viagra overdose during rigor mortis), and she's more than eager to share:

Conservative bloggers are part of the story. They have vilified me, mounted a “wilding” attack against me…we were, it seemed the first victims of a new kind of digital McCarthyism, which uses the same techniques as the old McCarthyism–rumors, slurs, false charges and ugly attacks–but now employs the Internet, talk radio and cable TV echo chamber to ricochet information around the world…meanwhile, the mainstream media…were happy to stoke the firewood on a competitor’s funeral pyre, repeating the conservative blogs, mischaracterizing events and not doing any real reporting of their own. Honestly, it hurt. It all hurt terribly…

Conservative bloggers, you see, were part of the story. Even as she villifies us, she also can't hat-tip us and say we WERE the story.

Well, not me. But other guys.

There's more to this nonsense, including this idiot's comparison of her plight to Survivor, but I don't want to "slink" the Anchoress. Hit the link.

Thanks to Thoughts Online, who has thoughts on, well, line about this as well as another instance of media bias, the next story down. It turns out, get this, that the amateur leftist webzine Slate is upset about that the tax-deduction for mortgage interest "costs taxpayers billions."

Lower taxes cost the taxpayers that. That's beautiful.

Correction: I originally said the NYT published this nonsense. Well, you can hardly blame me for making that error. But it was in fact the amateur leftist webzine Slate, where all the writers have Michael Kinsely's snotty attitude but lack the talent or brains to pull it off gracefully.

digital tighty whiteys for me. Shows off my IP packet.

Posted by: BrewFan on April 15, 2005 03:58 PM

I notice Mapes says that inside CBS, "panic spread like mad cow disease during the initial blogging attacks." Really, the jokes on this screed are going to write themselves.

Posted by: utron on April 15, 2005 04:10 PM

Well, you don't expect her to take personal responsibility for her partisan hackery and journalistic ineptitude do you. That would, like, totally ruin her liberal victim street cred. Dig?

Besides, as long as they are busy blaming the conservatives for the ills of the world (now with wilding), you know what they are up to. It's when they go quiet that you should worry.

Super blog! Really great stuff! Love the rape analogy too! The bitch was asking for it!

Don't wear tight skirts or peddle fake memos and then act like you don't want it! Improve your wilding skills today -- try natural male enhancement!

Y'all are gettin' old.

The people Mary really needs to be upset with appear to be secondary targets.

From the day the investigatory whitewash began, I knew Mary was going under the bus. I just wanted everyone else to go along with her, which was far too much to hope for.

But this book will be on the Remaindered table for $3 six months after it's published. I hope she remembered to sign a contract for a flat fee, not an advance.

Posted by: Dianna on April 15, 2005 04:17 PM

Hey! Great blog! Love whatever the hell it is you're talking about here!

And "Megan"/Ralphie, let me quote Al Pacino when I say, "Ah'm jess gettin' started!"

You know what?! I don't even know if that IS Al Pacino! I'm a spambot! I don't get out to the cinema as much as I might like! I'm too busy taking candid pictures of my sexy friends Katie and Lisa!

Posted by: Pure Discount Viagro on April 15, 2005 04:21 PM

Great blog! My sexy friend Megan told me all about you. I agree that Mary Mapes is an ignorant slut! Help deal with the 'boners' with bad timing, try Midol!

Ace--

The amateur leftist webzine Slate also had a story on the mortgage deduction today.

Since I'm a pretty big fan of a flat tax with no loopholes, I'm okay with the proposal, but sheesh, the language they use to support it-- you'd think I was a vile billionaire for getting a tax refund on my fucking house.

Is it wrong to use the tax code to incentivize owning a home? Maybe. But if so, it's wrong to use the tax code to incentivize *any* kind of behavior. Bye-bye charity deductions ;-).

And as for the contention that sinking the money into home debt is worse than having the money as disposable income throughout the year is, well, ludicrous.

First off, if you give me a tax refund at the end of the year (or, via withholding, let me have more money in my paycheck each month), I still spend it in the economy. It's not like I'm burying this money in the fucking garden.

But hey, if we eliminate the housing interest deduction, things will get so much more efficient, because we'll just lower the income tax to compensate for everyone!

To quote a wise man: "Stop fucking bullshitting me before I punch you in the gooch."

Slate and the NYT hate the housing deduction because 1) poor voters don't buy houses; 2) city dwellers don't buy houses; 3) if the housing deduction goes, they can stop giving money (i.e., *refunding* taxes paid) to those fucking Red Staters.

Oh, sure, they'll promise to fix the income tax, so in the end they can argue that, even with the housing deduction gone, the burden for homeowners evens out in the end because income taxes/sales taxes/Martian cockfighting taxes have been lowered to compensate.

Yeah, right, I'm *SURE* that will happen.

I'll give up my housing deduction in a second if it means I stop paying all that $$$ in my income tax. In fact, I can do that now-- it's called adjusting my withholding.

But that's not what Slate & the NYT really want, now is it?

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

I used to do recruiting at one time in my life and I found that those who live in New York think there is no other place BUT New York. Trying to get a New Yorker to move to the south was such a treat. And during the summer time, I would sell tickets for others to watch arrogant new yorkers spit-laugh when offering them a job. It was then and there I vowed NEVER to step foot in NYC. But then the repubs went and had there convention there...had to make an exception. It was EVERYTHING I dreamed it would be...and so much more.

SAVAGE VENGEANCE

A Lifetime Channel Drama Special
Based On A True Story
As Far As You Know
Wednesday 10 PM Eastern

Mary was taking an innocent jog through Rightwing Park when it happened: a vicious digital McCarthyite attack by a savage gang of Conservative bloggers who thought they could get away with it. They vilified her, mounted a ”wilding“ attack against her, gang-violated her repeatedly with the blunt ends of their Microsoft Word default fonts. And that was just the beginning of her humiliation. When no one believes her story, Mary takes matters into her own hands.

In this searing tale based on the real-life recollections of gang-blogging victim Mary Mapes (Valerie Bertinelli), one woman stands up against her violators and fights back against the system with a lethal barrage of hysterics, self pity, and a $600,000 book advance. Mary triumphs, teaching her attackers a violent lesson that when it comes to a reporter's reputation, "NO" means "NO."

Posted by: iowahawk on April 15, 2005 06:13 PM

Wilding?

Is that anything like the Wildlings from George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire? Or is it more like the Wierding Way from the Dune movie (though not, mind you, from the books)? Maybe a Wild Things attack, wherein Kevin Bacon exposes his penis to his unsuspecting victims. Perhaps she meant a "Wingding" attack, suggesting that she's been assaulted by people using non-standard fonts.

Nah. She's probably just fuckin' nuts is all.

"Valerie Bertinelli"

I have to say, Iowahawk is the first Iowegian I've ever laughed with, and not AT.

But Iowa is still an acronym for Idiots Out Wandering Around.

:)

I believe "wilding" comes from A Clockwork Orange.

Posted by: TheShadow on April 15, 2005 10:21 PM

Doesn't Mary consider for a moment that everyone over the age of about five or six could see through her 'well researched' story? That Conservative bloggers acted to ring the B.S. bell when no one else had the guts to is less a failing of those very same bloggers than a failure by the MSM to call it what it was: garbage. It should also concern Mary that citizens are now tasked with holding the institutionalized media accountable due to a failure or unwillingness of the various other media outlets to hold one of their own accountable, especially in light of the flawed, transparent nature of the story.

Posted by: Trooper John Smith on April 15, 2005 10:35 PM

Iowa,

Good stuff, but why would you waste that in the comments of my site rather than in a post on your own?

You newbies.

Posted by: ace on April 15, 2005 11:12 PM

Wilding? Mary Mapes? I wouldn't fuck her with a stolen dick if I could blame it on somebody else.

Posted by: John Thorpe on April 15, 2005 11:52 PM

C'mon! Slate ain't all THAT bad. Even Fred Kaplan is readable on occasion. Dalia Lithwick mighta had a decent column in there too, once or twice. The rest are mostly not bad. You can't only read what you agree with!

Of course, I'd rather read Ace!

Posted by: slickdpdx on April 16, 2005 01:06 AM

TheShadow: no; the attackers were loudly singing Tone Loc's "Wild Thang" in the prison cell where they were being interred. The cops were horrified but hadn't (yet) heard the song, it not yet having crossed over then as far as it has since. So they told the press that they were singing about "wild-ing".

No-one involved in this event had read or seen "Clockwork Orange".

"...The most significant event that occurred that evening was the brutal beating and rape of a 29 year old female jogger, whose bloody and almost lifeless body was found at about 1:30 AM on April 20, 1989. Later investigation showed that she had apparently been accosted and knocked down on a transverse road in the park at about 102nd Street, dragged into the woods where she was assaulted, and then dragged further into the woods, where the major attack upon her occurred. She was found about 200 feet further into the park, near a footpath..."
The attack was savage.

The comparison Mapes makes is puerile and offensive.
