NYT Exclusive: Kerry Campaign Theme "Fortunate Son" Not On Bush's iPod!

This from the very fair-and-balanced and certainly-not-a-liberal at all Elizabeth Bumiller.

In telling us what is actually on Bush's iPod (surprising and cool choice-- My Sharona) Bumiller feels the need to mention that CCR's Fortunate Son -- about, of course, the children of the rich avoiding service in Vietnam -- is not on Bush's iPod.

There are probably more than eighteen million songs that aren't on Bush's iPod.

Bumiller -- objective and nonpartisan and not slanting her stories in the least -- feels compelled to recall the AWOL nonstory in a puff-piece about iPod music choices:

As for an analysis of Mr. Bush's playlist, Mr. Levy of Rolling Stone started out with this: "One thing that's interesting is that the president likes artists who don't like him."

Mr. Levy was referring to Mr. Fogerty, who was part of the anti-Bush "Vote for Change" concert tour across the United States last fall. Mr. McKinnon, who once wrote songs for Kris Kristofferson's music publishing company, responded in an e-mail message that "if any president limited his music selection to pro-establishment musicians, it would be a pretty slim collection."

Nonetheless, Mr. McKinnon said that Mr. Bush had not gone so far as to include on his playlist "Fortunate Son," the angry anti-Vietnam war song about who has to go to war that Mr. Fogerty sang when he was with Creedence Clearwater Revival. ("I ain't no senator's son ... Some folks are born silver spoon in hand.") As the son of a two-term congressman and a United States Senate candidate, Mr. Bush won a coveted spot with the Texas Air National Guard to avoid combat in Vietnam.

This is one for her clip-book. It's pretty hard to work in a nasty partisan attack into a silly piece like this, but damn, did she manage it with aplomb.

And shamelessness.

Ace, this cries out for a top ten list.

BTW, it's a safe bet that Ted Kennedy doesn't have G&R's "I Used To Love Her, But I Had To Kill Her" on his iPod.

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

I was thinking the same thing... but I need help!

Posted by: ace on April 11, 2005 02:49 PM

"Cocaine" by Clapton, "War Pigs/Fairies Wear Boots" by Sabbath....

Posted by: Allah on April 11, 2005 02:54 PM

I'm sorry, no comment on this post - I'm still reeling from the news that Son of Nixon is straight ...

Posted by: Bill from INDC on April 11, 2005 03:06 PM

Yeesh... the meme that won't die. Being a TANG fighter pilot was not a "coveted spot," and many of them died.

Posted by: TallDave on April 11, 2005 03:11 PM

I'm sitting here right now laughing at the idea of Bush lip syncing to "My Sharona." Imagine him on the treadmill in the morning with the headphones on: "my-y-y-y-y-whoo!"

Posted by: Allah on April 11, 2005 03:15 PM

The Ted Kennedy Remix, for Dave and Ace:

"I used to love her, but I had to kill her,
She drove me nuts, I drove us off a bridge,
Then I got out and swam awaaaay..ayayayayayay!"

Posted by: TallDave on April 11, 2005 03:15 PM

Allah: I was actually more disturbed by the idea of Bush singing "such a dirty mind, always get it up, for the touch, of the younger kind"

That's a bit more in Clinton's wheelhouse.

Posted by: TallDave on April 11, 2005 03:19 PM

Reports say that Howard Dean does not have "Screaming for Vengeance" by Judas Priest on his I-pod.

Someone write a column!!!!!

Posted by: The Warden on April 11, 2005 03:45 PM

The man listens to George Jones.

He is the chosen one.

Posted by: See-Dubya on April 11, 2005 03:51 PM

Ah yes, the venerable NYT.
It's not about the facts, it's about what WE think.
Meanwhile, Fogarty's still out there flogging songs from 'Centerfield' and wondering what was wrong with the Blue Ridge Rangers.

Posted by: ed in texas on April 11, 2005 04:05 PM

Songs not found of politician iPods:
1) I'm too sexy (Right Said Fred) - Rep. Henry Waxman
2) The Wanderer (Dion and the Belmonts) - Pres. Bill Clinton
3) My Boyfriends Back (The Angels) - Rep. Barney Frank
4) Fat Bottom Girls (Queen) - Sen Hillary! Clinton
5) I Wanna Rock and Roll All Night (and Party Every Day) (Kiss) - Sen Ted Kennedy
6) Short People (Randy Newman) - Labor Secretary and Travelocity SpokesGnome Robert Reich
7) Dixie (various artists) - Sen Robert Byrd

Posted by: Ayes of Death David on April 11, 2005 04:20 PM

Please note that Fogarty did not go to Vietnam but instead served in the national guard. This illustrates the hypocrisy of Bumiller/Kerry: the common man and protest songwriter was availed of the same opportunity as the Ivy League scion.

Posted by: john on April 11, 2005 04:24 PM

Not on Ted Kennedy's iPod:

  1. The Bottle Let Me Down - Merle Haggard
  2. Roadhouse Blues - The Doors
  3. Drive On - Johnny Cash
  4. Right is Right - Rufus and Chaka Khan
  5. Nothing's Left - Insane Clown Posse
  6. Ted, Just Admit It... - Jane's Addiction
  7. Devil on the Left - Jamie O'Neal
  8. Big Ruddy Head - Whitee
  9. Drowned - The Who
  10. anything by the Dead Kennedies

Posted by: vonKreedon on April 11, 2005 04:26 PM

Please also note, IIRC, that the son of Texas Senator Lloyd Bentsen, Gov. Dukakis' running mate, served in the same TANG unit as George Bush. Don't remember Fogerty singing about that in 1988.

Posted by: Salt Lick on April 11, 2005 04:53 PM

Just off the top of my head...

For President Bill, "Devil in the Blue Dress," Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels.

For the Governator, "California Uber Alles," the Dead Kennedys.

And for my man, Howard Dean, a triple:
3) "21st Century Schizoid Man," King Crimson.
2) "Bigmouth Strikes Again," the Smiths.
1) "I Wanna Be Sedated," the Ramones.

Posted by: utron on April 11, 2005 05:05 PM

Utron - Those are very good.

Posted by: vonKreedon on April 11, 2005 05:13 PM

Surely Bill Clinton lacks room on his iPod for "Earth Girls Are Easy." Ted Kennedy, of course, never listens to the Beatles' "Run For Your Life."

Posted by: Sonetka on April 11, 2005 05:33 PM

Senator Byrd, I think, gets another Ramones song: "The KKK Took My Baby Away."

Posted by: utron on April 11, 2005 05:41 PM

Where's my t-shirt.

Facist.

Heh.

Posted by: fat kid on April 11, 2005 05:46 PM

Other songs found missing from politicians' Ipods.

Bill Clinton: Small Cigar (Jethro Tull)
Hillary Clinton: The Bitch is Back (Elton John)
Ted Kennedy: Dead in the Water (David Grey)
Sandy Berger: Shredding the Document (John Hiatt)

Posted by: The Warden on April 11, 2005 05:48 PM

vonKreedon - the DKs title most shockingly absent from Ted Kennedy's iPod: Too Drunk to F*ck.

Posted by: Kerry on April 11, 2005 05:49 PM

Also missing:

Senator Robert Byrd (aka “Senator Pork”)’ D-WV: Audioslave’s “I am the Highway”

DC Mayor Marion Barry: Neil Young’s “Powderfinger”

Retired News Spinner Dan Rather: R.E.M.’s “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?”

DNC Chair Howard Dean: Black Flag’s “Loose Nut”

Senator Barbara Mikulski, D-MD: Bowie’s “Laughing Gnome”

Senator Ted Kennedy, D-MA: Crash Test Dummies “The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead”

Posted by: Nordicgirl on April 11, 2005 06:15 PM

"Cocaine" (Clapton) - Marion Berry
"Shout" (The Isley Brothers) - Howard Dean

Posted by: Ayes of Death David on April 11, 2005 06:27 PM

The Late Strom Thurmond: The Rolling Stones, "Brown Sugar"

Hillary Clinton: Andrew Lloyd Webber, "I Don't Know How to Love Him"

Al "Earth in the Balance" Gore: Beach Boys, "Warmth of the Sun"

Tom Daschle: The Scorpions, "Too Much Time on My Hands"

To show that we have a sense of humor and/or that this board is not free republic, how about some more re-thugs? :P

Posted by: fat kid on April 11, 2005 07:22 PM

"50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" - Newt Gingrich
"La Marseillaise" - Donald Rumsfeld

Posted by: Ayes of Death David on April 11, 2005 07:33 PM

Uh, fat kid, I believe the correct term is "Rethuglikkkan," plus a skull and crossbones gif, to scare the kids.

Posted by: TallDave on April 11, 2005 09:31 PM

This Ipod crap is a lot of nonsense. I know many veterans (myself included) who thoroughly enjoyed (and still do) music by Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and John Fogerty. So what, they're great musicians! As far as politics and national defense, they are innocently ignorant at best and just plain unadulterated stupid assholes who are unable to ask meaningful questions of the Stalin-Fascist left at worst.

At least George Bush flew fighter aircraft that left a lot of American widows in their wake. As for John Kerry -- awshit just forget it!

Posted by: Mescalero on April 11, 2005 09:58 PM

The Scorpions, "Too Much Time on My Hands"

Definitely wasn't the Scorps. It was either REO Speedwagon or someone like that.

Posted by: ace on April 11, 2005 10:58 PM

Actually, "Too Much Time on My Hands" was Styx. Even worse than REO Speedwagon, and that's saying a lot.

So, when I get rejuvenated into a 20-year-old demigod, do facts like that get purged from my brain so I can use the neurons for something slightly useful?

Posted by: utron on April 11, 2005 11:07 PM

Yeah, Styx. I even remember the video for that song, right when non-concert vids were taking off. When Tommy Shaw was singin "I'm sitting on the bar stoll, actin like a damn fool.." the director chose to interpret that for this new youth medium via a scene of Tommy Shaw actually sitting on a bar stool, acting like a damn fool and singing the song to other patrons. Visionary, wild stuff. Blew me and my freinds minds and we could tell imagination was gonna be the only limit for this new TV medium.

NB. It is my hope future generations will recognize Dennis Deyoung has a lot to answer for that which went wrong in the late 20th century. A hell of a lot.

Posted by: on April 11, 2005 11:30 PM

Right, Styx. I can never, ever, ever remember Styx.

I can remember "the Alan Parsons Project." But I always forget Styx.

And Styx was actually considered tres cool at some point.

Posted by: ace on April 11, 2005 11:34 PM

Me above. (Damn, why is it so hard to remember to write my name? Where's the science for that, huh?)

Posted by: Ray Midge on April 11, 2005 11:34 PM

Dave at Garfield Ridge had a good suggestion.

For Teddy's iPod

1. Whiskey Blues
2. Tide is High
3. Steppin' in My Brother's (bigger) shoes.
4. Sea of Love
5. Saturday Night Fever
6. One Whiskey, One Bourbon, One Beer
7. That's Alright Momma
8. John Barleycorn Must Die.
9. Born to Run
10. Ode to Mary-Jo

Posted by: Cedarford on April 11, 2005 11:40 PM

Good Lord. I'd forgotten all about the Alan Parson Project, and now I'm remembering them and Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells," not to mention an unspeakably lame Styx video.

It'll take another twenty years to re-forget all that awful, awful music. I think I hate you guys.

Posted by: utron on April 11, 2005 11:59 PM

I'd forgotten all about the Alan Parson Project

That puts you one over on Alan Parsons, don't it?

Posted by: ace on April 12, 2005 12:01 AM

Hey! Styx was "the poor man's Yes" once upon a time....

Posted by: cthulhu on April 12, 2005 12:38 AM

Different tastes, Uton. I liked Tubular Bells. And the Parsons Project's "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" done after Edgar Allen Poe's work, was super zonk-out music. Especially "The Raven".

It was Parson's production of "Dark Side of the Moon" that made him a music great.

And throw in Jeff Lynne, who did OK as a musician with ELO, etc, but really made his mark producing and collaborating with the legends - Beatles, Streisand, Dylan, Orbison, Petty...

More songs for Teddy's iPod

1. Smells like Teen Spirit
2. Somebody (find me) Somebody to Love.
3. Let's Go Surfin'
4. Massachusetts.
5. Stuck in the Ozone Again.
6. Under the Boardwalk.
7. Abraham, Martin, and John.
8. Roxanne.
9. Theme from "Sea Hunt".
10. My Darling Clementine.

Posted by: Cedarford on April 12, 2005 12:46 AM

Hillary's iPod

1. Theme from "Rawhide".
2. Your Cheating Heart.
3. I am Woman.
4. Soviet National Anthem. (done by the Red Army Chorus)
5. Fat Bottomed Girls.
6. Southern Man.
7. I Want to Come Over.
8. Arkansas Razorback Anthem (Bill whistled it to draw Hillary in close enough to the bed to grab).
9. Vincent.
10. New York.
11. Hail to the Chief.

Posted by: Cedarford on April 12, 2005 12:58 AM

Yet more iPod tunes for Sen. Teddy:

1. Ready Teddy - Little Richard
2. Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple
3. Kneeling Drunkard's Plea - Johnny Cash
4. Alibi - Elvis Costello
5. Love Me, I'm a Liberal - Phil Ochs
6. The End of Camelot - Peter Cetera
7. Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkle
8. Riffin' the Scotch - Billie Holiday
9. (I'm) Fat - Weird Al Yankovic
10. Joanna - Toto
11. Soviet National Anthem (downloaded from Hillary)

Posted by: Cedarford on April 12, 2005 01:39 AM

i'm a little dissapointed that with all the songs mentioned for teddy, nobody has said "under the bridge" by the chili peppers. or very likely, somebody did, and i missed it
