NY Sun: How a Lone Diplomat Compromised the Hunt For OBL

The article teased this afternoon is now in print; better yet, it's in pixels:

By RICHARD MINITER Special to the Sun

WASHINGTON — A lone U.S. ambassador compromised America’s hunt for Osama bin Laden in Pakistan for more than two years,The New York Sun has learned.

Ambassador Nancy Powell, America’s representative in Pakistan, refused to allow the distribution in Pakistan of wanted posters, matchbooks, and other items advertising America’s $25 million reward for information leading to the capture of Mr. bin Laden and other Al Qaeda leaders.

Instead, thousands of matchbooks, posters, and other material — printed at taxpayer expense and translated into Urdu, Pashto, and other local languages —remained “impounded” on American Embassy grounds from 2002 to 2004, according to Rep. Mark Kirk, Republican of Illinois.

While the American government was engaged in a number of “black” or covert intelligence activities to locate Al Qaeda leaders, Mr. Kirk said, the “white” or public efforts — which have succeeded in the past in leading to the capture of wanted terrorists — were effectively shut down in the months following the September 11 attacks.

Mr. Kirk discovered Ms. Powell’s unusual order in January 2004 and, over the past year, launched a series of behind-the-scenes moves that culminated in a blunt conversation with President Bush aboard Air Force One, the removal of the ambassador, and congressional approval for reinvigorating the hunt for Mr. bin Laden.

And what was Ms. Powell before becoming a top diplomat to an incredibly important ally in the War on Terror?

The former schoolteacher was replaced by veteran diplomat Ryan Crocker in November 2004. The mood at the American Embassy lifted almost immediately.

Today's NEA

Either pay us more money to do crossword puzzles while your kids watch analingus videos, or else we'll fuck up every other goddamned institution in America.

We're not jerking around here, Chief.

Read the whole thing, as the man says. The elected representatives of the United States decided to make capturing OBL a top priority, but an idiot bureaucrat who thought she knew better queered the whole deal.

Thanks to "someone," whom I really wish would get hisself a proper handle, because it really looks dumb to thank "someone" all the time.

How about "Nick Valentine"? There's a name you could pick up chicks with, too.

Perhaps Cedarford's NEA. That would explain a lot.

Nah, Cedarford's not smart enough.

He's DownTown Lad smart.

the bimbo still has a job at State.
she should be supersizing the fries.

the congressman who discovered the problem was clever and resourceful.
he avoided publicity and did not shoot his mouth off in front of the cameras.
he quietly put his case together and waited for a chance to present it to GWB.
the american people were well-served.

Ace, Ace, please--NOT all teachers are NEA zombies. I belong to my local association because it provides liability coverage and it's the entity that negotiates my contract (I'd have to pay 80% as fair share anyway). I do not contribute to its PAC, and by law none of our dues goes to any political cause (if any money does, it's illegal).

I know there are worthless "educators" (how I hate that word) who need to be removed from the classroom, but there are more dedicated, professional teachers who give their all each day to help civilize the barbarians we're sent.

The fact that the diplomat was a "former" teacher suggests that she wasn't good enough to last there, at least to me. Real teachers wouldn't do anything else.

This from a guy named "Headquarters"? (At least "Hindquarters" would be vivid. Not to mention, you know...)

She was a career State Department flunky. That says everything you need to know.

Posted by: Steve L. on March 28, 2005 08:46 AM

Do you recall what happened to Mary Ryan, the official in charge on Visa Express? She was terminated and subsequently was awarded a $15,000 bonus for job excellence. Joel Mowbray of NRO questioned Richard Boucher of the State Dept about this. The arrogance of this public employee is evident throughout the question and answer period. link

Here is a snippet from a CATO Institute study.
"It is hard to believe, for example, that only 6 employees during the past 18 years deserved to be fired at the State Department. This 28,000-person agency is notorious for mishandling secret documents, allowing unauthorized people to wander its hallways, and letting Russian spies bug a meeting room down the hall from the former secretary's office. American voters, like shareholders of corporations, must demand better performance than that.

The Ambassador said she had higher priorities. Lots of other crap happening in Pakistan. Logistic support for the war in Afghanstan, preventing Pakistan from going radical Islamic itself in leadership, wrapping up the AQ Khan nuclear network, diffusing the Idia-Pak war that loomed in 2003, 5-6 other major priorities.

Sounds like she screwed up not passing out the matchbooks because many Americans believe catching bin Laden will be some magical moment that makes all well in the universe and ends the war on terror, and gains "justice" (Though we haven't put the actual mastermind of 9/11 Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and thedozens of minions we have captured on trial).

Binnie of course played CEO to Mohammed's idea, said great, looks like we could kill lots of Zionist sympathizers that way, and signed off on it...letting the 20 or so people actually involved in the plot proceed. Later, Binnie worked with another contact to get the 12 clueless Saudis who didn't exactly know they were about to be martyred to provide the hijacking muscle..

Still, the public believes "getting" Binnie and Mullah Omar (remember him??) as all important, and the Ambassador had no right to block that quest on her own, despite other high concerns like ensuring Pakistan's nuclear program doesn't spread and preventing a war with India that could kill 10's of millions.

IMO, the best thing we should do is de-elevate and de-mystify Binnie. Not raise his reward to 50 million as some "get the white whale at all costs" Congress Reps have advocated, but lowering it to 15 million saying Bin-Boy is less important now because he is hiding in fear.

15 million would be enough to motivate any Muslim wishing to betray him as much as 25 or 50 million would be if money trumps their honor code, we can keep an intense search going because I agree it will be most satisfying to eventually get the guy, and most important, dissing Binnie as a coward and lowering his reward would properly piss the guy off and maybe make him stick his head out of his hidey-hole.

Goddess,

Of course I know you're right. But a joke loses something when you start caveating it, you know?

Unfair generalizations are the lifeblood of comedy. Or at least my comedy. I hope you understand.

And you know-- I had some kickass public school teachers.

Ace,
I read this post in my Podcast today. Give it a listen if you get a minute. Great stuff.

Of course, Ace--and there are plenty of moonbats among teachers. Some bloggers do tar all teachers with the same ideological brush, and I feel that I need to speak up for those of us who--literally-- put our lives on the line in the classroom.

Those who can, teach.
Those who can't go into to some less significant line of work.
