Mr. President-- Recall Congress, Now

"So Proud To Be a Republican:"

The Republican controlled House passed a bill on Wednesday night that would have saved Terri Schiavo's life. But the Republican controlled Senate wouldn't pass it. The Republican controlled Senate instead passed its own narrower bill at 5:35 pm tonight, but it couldn't become a law because, 75 minutes earlier, the Republican controlled House decided, without waiting for the Senate vote, to adjourn for its vacation for Easter.

Pretty cool, huh?

Does this feel like a fix to anyone else? Like conservative Congressmen maybe wanted to appear to be "trying to do something," and yet, awww shucks, they just couldn't act in time?

These jackasses make $150,000+ on our dime. They can work a fucking Friday morning to save a life.

As you pointed out in the other thread there were also 9 'republican' senators in the Florida legislature that couldn't bring themselves to vote to save Terri's life. WTF? If I was in their district I'd start a recall petition. Of course what they really are are POS career politicians who call themselves republicans but the only 'values' they hold are the ones in their reelection campaign war chest.

This is another issue that Congress shouldn't be involved in, though they took the "low road" to show it. Rational, cognitive people would not chose the same fate of Terri. Her continued survival is not a 'legislative' decision, it's a deeply personal 'family' decision. To be made by family without government intervention. The husband, by law, is the primary decision maker in this case. We have to assume, he and his wife, Terri, discussed matters like this. I have with my spouses, haven't you? Let her go. Stop the torture of Terri and the insanity of legislative egos.

Posted by: ammobob on March 18, 2005 08:01 AM

I've heard (hopefully reliably) that they aren't actually recessed yet and will be coming back to finish this business Friday morning before a recess is offically called.

They have also subopenead Terri Schiavo to appear before congress to testify, so personally, I hope they do recess. Once she's been subopeneaed, they won't be able to touch her until congress is done.

Posted by: Drew on March 18, 2005 08:02 AM

In response to Ammobob's comment: No, I never did discuss this with my spouse until we were drawing up papers 10 years after we were married. I made a living will and now there is no question as to my wishes.

How can any sane system allow the murder of an individual based on biased hearsay?!

The Ace has it right!!

Ammobob, did you read any of Ace's previous posts on this? I'm guessing the answer to that is "no."

Posted by: Andrea Harris on March 18, 2005 08:37 AM

You know, when I was 25 I didn't have discussions about "right to die" issues with my husband. Especially - consider this was 15 years ago ... it was something talked about even LESS back then (did they have "living wills" then?) NRO has an excellent article (Andy McCarthy) on this case. This is barbaric, it really is. I say, if we can starve Terri to death, next in line should be Scott Peterson.

Posted by: Carin on March 18, 2005 08:38 AM

An even BETTER article is this one Reverend Robert Johansen's NRO piece

Posted by: Carin on March 18, 2005 08:41 AM

WEll, that will teach me to read top to bottom in the morning (Ace mentioned both articles already.) But that Johanson article is awesome. This has me just SICK.

Posted by: Carin on March 18, 2005 08:47 AM

Actually the FLA legislature did pass a bill that would save Terri's life, but the FLA supreme court declared it against the state constitution. This entire case has been a f**kup from the get-go. I think that the "right to die" declarations should required the same level of proof as wills, none of this 'oh she mentioned that in passing while watching a TV show' type of crap. Then proof of PVS shoudl be required that involves evaluations using ALL available medical techniques and this determination made by a board of STATE APPOINTED neurologists. Then, and only then, if PVS is proven should the patient be put to sleep with the same compassion that we give our pets instead of starving them to death.

Posted by: rabidfox on March 18, 2005 09:09 AM

Andrea, wasn't it nice for ammobob to pop in and prove our hypothesis? Ammobob, you should be embarrassed dude.

In Islam, the weak and the defective shall all be killed. They are a waste of space and food and are to be left out on a mountain top at birth (or following an accident) for the crows to eat, or they become suicide bombers. They shall receive 72VIRGINS in the next life.

I've only been following this story tangentially, and have never seen a straight answer to this question (since most people writing about it seem to have a fanatical devotion to one side of the issue or the other.)

Is Terry Schiavo medically "brain dead?" If not, what exactly distinguishes her from someone who would be pronounced dead?

Posted by: David C on March 18, 2005 10:39 AM

Dear Terri Schindler-Schiavo,
I am sure you have no idea how deeply you have touched so many people, but how we feel today does not matter. Maybe later it will be nice for your family to read how much affection and sympathy we have for you. You are about my age. I bet we liked a lot of the same music and movies in high school. We have not forgotten that you are a person with an individual personality, and not a slogan or a symbol. On this day, Terri, the only other thing I can think to say to you is fear no evil. What I hope for you today is the awareness of the presence of the One who loves you most, your Creator and Heavenly Father.

Dear American right-to-life movement,
As you did with Sun Hudson earlier in the week, you have completely fallen down on the job. Your signs, speeches and petitions are a joke. Congratulations on getting some face time on camera, though. But what will you to tomorrow? Will you pull out the guardianship statutes of all the states, looking with a fresh eye at flaws and dangers? Will you take the time to do that? Will you propose reforms to those laws? Will it hold your attention long enough to go through the years-long process of running for office, attaining office, and passing the reforms? Will you stick around long enough to help impeach Judge Greer and others like him? It won't be done in a week or a month. It will take years.

Dear Members of the United States Congress:
Please, please, don't try stunts that you will not go to the mat for. Do not propose "creative" bills that you have no intention of getting to a vote. Do not debate up to the point of seeming hope, and then go on vacation. And do not, damn you, give ammunition to those on the other side who sneeringinly claim that "they are only trying to keep Terri alive to score political points with the religious right." You are making those critics seem correct. You are doing more harm to the cause of life than good, and exposing your self-imposed impotence.

Dear Florida Legislature:
You are the most disingenuous and cowardly group of people I've run into in a long time. You have known all about Terri's plight for years. The feeding tube has been removed twice before. The case has made it glaringly obvious that the guardianship statute is not perfect, yet you have not taken serious steps to reform it even in the face of this impending and tragic injustice. The Florida Supreme Court found your earlier slapdash attempt called Terri's Law to be unconstitutional last September. You have had every minute of every day since then to decide how to act, yet here we are on the morning of Terri's execution, wondering whether or not you will resume the debate you adjourned on last night.

You are the body with the most direct, simple, and straightforward responsibility to prevent a ghastly injustice caused in part by the flaws in the laws you've passed. As our elected representatives, we also look to you to provide a check on renegade judges who hold our very lives in their hands. If it is not the job of government to first and foremost protect life and property, then you have no legitimate function at all.

Posted by: ArrMatey on March 18, 2005 10:41 AM

Ah, I see my question is answered (or at least the facts in debate are properly framed) in this article, which Ace cited in a previous article:

This is what happens when we become too respectful of the law. We've forgotten how to engage in civil disobedience. If the moonbats can go off and flaunt the law with gay marriage and such, why should we be constrained in saving a life?
Someone could "liberate" Terri, take her to a jurisdiction not subject to this moron Greer (state or country). Once Terri was out of danger, those executing the direct action could turn themselves in and recieve pardons from either Jeb or W, or both.
Obviously playing by the rules is preferable, but if the game is crooked, what's the point in playing?

Posted by: Iblis on March 18, 2005 11:06 AM

If the facts are as the priest at NRO says they are (and I'm betting that they are) this is the most egregious example of Liberal bias in the MSM I've seen in quite awhile. The MSM, seeminly aways so very positive of what they report past the point of smugness, leaves the impression that this is all a big jumble of "he says" "she says" accusations and no one seems to be able to figure out just what the truth is. We must all pray for mercy for Terri Shaivo today, and even for her killers, including the MSM. For even Michael Shaivo, Dr. Death, Judge Greer and the Liberal media shall all face the Wrath of God for this crime, and they shall all be very surprised at just how terrible that can be.

Isn't Easter more than a week away? What are they on - spring break?

Posted by: slickdpdx on March 18, 2005 11:23 AM

Dear Ace, Thank you so much for working so hard on this issue. You are a wonderful person. Gail

Posted by: gail on March 18, 2005 11:50 AM

If the husband has a demonstrated conflict of interest, does this become a domestic violence issue? If there is a shadow of doubt about Terri's own wishes, or or if the husband has demonstrated that he does not have his wife's best interests in mind, then those tubes should not be removed.

Posted by: dillene on March 18, 2005 12:11 PM

The federal habeas provision is exactly what's called for here, I think.

Posted by: someone on March 18, 2005 02:03 PM

Which Senate Republicans would not sign the initial bill? I would like to write some letters.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
