Crazy Blog-Money, Crazy Blog-Money, Thank God All Mighty, I'm in the Crazy Blog-Money At Last

Well, no I don't. But in an interview with Right Wing News, Henry Copeland of BlogAds teases me with the possibility:

John Hawkins: Do you believe the number of advertisers and amount of revenue generated by blogging is going to continue to grow for the rest of this year and into next year?

Henry Copeland: I think the numbers will continue to grow at LEAST until bloggers get 0.1% of the total US annual advertising spend, $250 billion. That may take 3 years or it may take 18, but it is inevitable. Bloggers understand their subjects and their audiences better than anyone else in media AND they've got the lowest overheads. After all, pajamas cost much less than suits.

John Hawkins: I want you to play Nostradamus here -- don't worry, everybody understands you're just speculating -- and give me an estimate: How many bloggers do you see reaching the "earning a living" threshold over the next few years?

Henry Copeland: I'd be thrilled to reach 500. But 5000 is possible. And if things go really well 50,000.

I don't imagine this will be of much interest to anyone except except bloggers. Except to the limited extent that non-bloggers may be curious to see how the alternative media is finally getting some real (i.e., cash-money) attention.

But to bloggers, of course, it's all very interesting indeed.

I would be very happy to see bloggers earn a living from their blog or at least be as renumerative as a part time job. I am always afraid that you guys will burnout and quit writing.

I would start a blog in a second if I could convince the Missus that it might bring in a little somethin' now and then. Not a whole bunch, either--we just want to spend a week on the Riviera, not move there permanently.

I think this is great news. How many talented reporters are out there covering 4-H club meetings for the Omaha Bacon-Register or slaving away in the bowels of a liberal machine like the NYTimes or the LA Times? They might be able to break away and put their talents to use by blogging.

Ace...if only 10 bloggers out there eventually make a living at it...you'll be one of them!

Keep up the great work!

Pretty soon you'll be able to afford more than a $3,000,000 loft too!

Then what will DL hold over your head?

8 ads now, BTW. A new record, right?

Posted by: Stumbo on March 17, 2005 04:53 PM

So there are. A couple are dropping off on the twentieth, and I just goosed my rates. I think there's too many.

I don't want to over-advertise, although no one seems to mind it too much.

Except for other bloggers, maybe, whose links are pushed way down on the page.

I hate to do this, but I'm thinking of doing a banner at the top of the page, too. Or under the masthead. And maybe adding a right sidebar for a "premium" ad slot (and there I'll stick the Most Recent comments and stuff for quick access).

Did I just say I didn't want to over-advertise?

I guess I'm a filthy liar.

Posted by: ace on March 17, 2005 05:02 PM

Boo! Don't mess with the masthead. Raising rates could work. Why not just have the top left slot be the premium one?

Posted by: someone on March 17, 2005 05:47 PM

Well, for one thing, having one premium ad in the left sidebar would push down the regular ads, and thus lower their price.

Having a banner above or below the masthead would be a problem? Hmmm... I know it wouldn't look the same, but, you know, Drudge and Lucianne and many others do it.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
