Save Beatallica!

Please sign the petition to ask Sony to knock it off with its silly cease-and-desist order against the most important rock band of the past 30 years.

Beatallica is the canary in the coalmine of the tortured-metaphor for the continued right of untrammelled free expression.

This aggression will not stand.

Note to Others Seeking to Emulate the Amazement That Is Beatallica: When you're doing a fusion thing, try not to pick the two most litigious bands in rock history.

Try, maybe, a Richard Marx/Foghat fusion. I think they'd be happy to just have the recognition.

Update! Allah tips that, despite being generally protective of his copyrights, Lars Ulrich actually supports Beatallica's right to continue doing parodies.

Kick-ass parodies, that is.

I'd Buy That Album For a Dollar Update: Jason thinks it's time for a Rick Astley/Blue Oyster Cult fusion band:

Personally, I think I'll start "Blue Astley Cult" with such songs as "Never Gonna to Fear The Reaper" and "Burnin' Together, Forever."

You know the best thing about it? Rick Astley was a tremendous rocker, of course, but I always thought he needed, how shall I put this?, more cowbell.

He really needed to explore the studio space, and he just didn't.

Done and done.

Seriously Ace, you should make "The Thing that Would Not Let it Be" the quasi-official AOSHQ theme song.

I'd die laughing if every time I linked on your side I got a 30 second blast of Chthulu.

Not a lawyer, again, but...

Another provision of copyright law is the parody provision. You could argue that Beatallica is making a parody of the Beatles and Metallica through their music and lyrics, so it would be allowed.

You can't just change the lyrics of a song; that's not parody. You have to actually be making fun of the creator of the original song for it to count. So most of what Weird Al does isn't technically parody; he just changes the lyrics to be funny. (If you look at the liner notes of his albums, and really, how would I know because I'm not that big of a nerd... um... yeah, so anyway, if you look at his liner notes, you'll see that he has to get permission from BMI/ASCAP/RecordCompanyDuJour to clear his work.)

But if I understand it right (and this area of the law is pretty subjective), these guys are, arguably, making fun of the Beatles and Metallica, so they're using the song to make fun of the creator of the song. Which is parody. And they're doing it in a more or less original way.

And, incidentally, lawyers are dicks.

Wise words, but let it be known that Lars Ulrich is on the side of the angels in this one.

Ace, I struck gold again!

Not only did I find that Beatallica has a functioning message board, but I also found the official logo for the group!

It's the first entry on my page. The logo is at the bottom. You can't miss it.

A little comic nugget you might have missed the first time around: At the very end of "Hey Dude," as the song is fading out, "Jaymz" sings, "Dudey dudey dude, I hope we don't get sued...."

As someone who is particularly fond of parodies, I pledge to fight this to the death.

Or until I'm winded. Actually, I didn't get much sleep last night, so maybe I'll start fighting later. Unless there's something good on TV.

BTW, fat kid, Google does discriminate.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
