"Heteronormative"

What does it mean? Well, it starts off "hetero," so you know it can't be good.

Seems to mean "encouraging and validating heterosexual norms and lifestyle choices."

So, you know-- big bad.

Apparently Jada Pinkett Smith is being accused of "heteronormative" speech, and that's got the Harvard GLBT community all up in a lather.

You really gotta read what the woman actually said. Basically, just a you-go-girl bit of fluff, but she made the big mistake of suggesting that women could have, should they desire such, husbands and babies as well as a career.

And you know-- that's practically hate speech now.

Kaus snarks off this idiotic contretemps with as much sarcasm as is necessary, without putting too much work into dispensing of such nonsense.

Top Ten Subjects Accused By the Harvard GLBT of Being "Heteronormative"

10. Mr. Roper

9. Anyone uncomfortable with the gossip-column buzzword "cannoodling"

8. Less "heterocritical" publications of the mainstream magazine industry, esp. Modern Bride, House & Garden, and Juggs: Home of the D-Cups

7. Brett Fuckin' Favre

6. Beer commercials, esp. those that make prominent display of busty women or boorish male behavior or, for that matter, beer

5. Jake

4. The Fat Man

3. Whitesnake, esp. the outrageously "heteronormative" Tawny Kitaen grinding on Jaguars

2. That late-night show on QVC where they try to sell you a set of three hundred knives ("look at that... that's a sweet little tactical folder... and you've got over two hundred more of them if you call within the next thirty seconds") as well as replica swords from Lord of the Rings and Krull

...and the Number One Subject of Harvard GBLT Complaints About Being "Heteronormative"...

1. Three words: Bob Dole's cock

You know who played The Fat Man dont you? William Conrad. You know who else Conrad played? Thats right- Frank Fuckin Cannon!!!

Posted by: a on March 3, 2005 03:27 AM

BWAHAHAH! Nice one.

Say Ace, not to change the subject or anything, but which camera did you end up buying?

The rest of you peasants need to make with the clicky on my name, as I've started a new blog, and we all know damn well your day won't be complete until you've gotten your daily dose of my rantings.

Posted by: Mr. Bowen on March 3, 2005 03:28 AM

coincidentally the Harvard GLBT have nothing against the phrase "Gob-smackingly"

Posted by: on March 3, 2005 03:29 AM

I saw this linked on Drudge yesterday afternoon, and the Harvard Crimson article I read talked about how members of the Harvard GLBT community were upset with what Pinkett said. The article also quoted at least one or two attendees who found the speech inspirational.

So what was missing from the Crimson article? It didn't bother to quote Pinkett's remarks at all. There wasn't even a summary of what Pinkett said.

This may have been a follow-up article, but the person who wrote it should have at least outlined what the Hell was said--you know, in case some readers were unfamiliar with Pinkett's "controversial" remarks.

I'm afraid that ee can expect to see the author--one Anna M. Friedman--at the NY Times or the WaPo sometime soon.

Posted by: Sean M. on March 3, 2005 04:30 AM

After seeing this news item yesterday I informed my colleagues at work that I was going to trademark the phrase "heterofascist."

But I shall instead release it into the public domain so that all those in the GBLT community and those in the process of "transitioning gender" make have another tool in their struggle.

Posted by: on March 3, 2005 05:44 AM

Ace--

Damn, I thought you had already seen this. I wrote up something on it yesterday, if you care to read. As usual, it's only a pale imitiation of your brilliant writing.

God, I hate you so.

Say it clear, say it loud, I'm heteronormative and I'm proud.

Posted by: Gaylord Ravenal on March 3, 2005 08:31 AM

C'mon, Ace - the Fatman? What about Ironside? Not only heteronormal but heterofascist as well!

But really - Bob Dole's cock? Jeff Gannon's cock? If you're not careful, Sully's going to permalink you when he gets back from his winter junket.

I may sound heteronormative here but:

WTF, you mention Ms. Kitaen without a gratuitous photo?!... Bastard.

Posted by: JFH on March 3, 2005 08:58 AM

I covered this too, my response was a tad more on the arsenic side of the spectrum, yours, as always, makes me laugh.

"Bob Dole's Cock"

Sounds like a Punk Band.

Posted by: Jennifer on March 3, 2005 09:01 AM

I may sound heteronormative here

Only to those who themselves are heteronormative. The more open-minded among us make no assumptions about the person behind the "JFH" initials.

You may be a mixed-race, wheelchair-bound lesbian practitioner of Wicca with Tourette's syndrome. And my posts to you will make no bigoted assumptions otherwise.

Krull?! LMAO!
Btw, what is Jada Pinkett Smith doing speaking at Harvard?

Posted by: John on March 3, 2005 09:07 AM

Ace-- O/T, Fred Kaplan is now part of the "Was Bush Right?" crowd.

Of course, he still hates Bush, so his column is filled with all the regular caveats.

He sounds to me just like some guy in D.C. complaining about how much the Nationals are going to suck this year, unable to appreciate that we have baseball at all.

Anyways, if you link this, do me a favor, and reserve a link for me this evening-- I enjoy parsing Kaplan's tripe, I just don't have any time for it at work (you know, doing the stuff that Kaplan always criticizes us for doing, like building pain rays).

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

Jada Pinkett Smith? I'd hit it.

Is that heteronormative?

"The truly Machiavellian thing to do here would be to pretend to be open to compromise with the GOP, force them to propose a detailed plan, then balk at the last minute and attack the plan in 2006. I'm not sure Democrats are that devious, though.)"

Oh yeah? When Bill Clinton was "negotiating" with the Republican congress (over gun control) through Trent Lott and Dick Army they agreed upon a deal, shook hands on it, and walked into the press conference where Clinton announced to the press that: "The Republicans have not acted in good faith, we tried to negotiate with them but they kept changing positions so the negotiations have ended." This ambush allowed Al Gore to immediately cast the deciding vote for the gun control legislation and announce at the press conference that the Republicans were "the gang that couldn't shoot straight."

Al Gore had been telling lies about Bill Bradley all over the country during the campaign. During a debate when Bradely got irate about it Gore said: "No Bill, I've never lied about anything, you're just angry that your vicious personal attackes haven't worked because the people can see thru you." Poor Bradely just sputtered in stunned disbelief at the audacity and sheer evil of Gore while the audience applauded!!!

By the way, I firmly believe that just seeing a picture of Ms. Pinkett Smith is heteronormative even without her speaking.

The knife set is sold on HSN (Home Shopping Network), not QVC.

Posted by: Tym on March 3, 2005 10:37 AM

There was one of those dopey quizzes going around. I blogged it. One question was what song you were listening to. I'd just been listening to Game of Love by Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders. You know: "The purpose of a man is to love a woman/The purpose of a woman is to love a man." Pretty damn heteronormative, if you ask me.

Posted by: David Gillies on March 3, 2005 11:45 AM

"The knife set is sold on HSN (Home Shopping Network), not QVC."

Tym, the fact that you knew this is not only proof that you're heteronormative, it's also really really scary.

Posted by: Brian B on March 3, 2005 12:07 PM

Brett Favre is heteronormative? Have you heard the way John Madden, Chris Berman and all these other sportcasters talk about him? That's love.

Plus, we all know Brett and Warren Sapp had that torrid love affair a few years back. They were hot.

Posted by: Kris on March 3, 2005 12:09 PM

Has anyone taken a moment to note that, whatever heteronormative issues Jada Pinkett Smith’s speech might have had (and incidentally, isn’t hetero already the norm?), it was still a bit ridiculous? It’s all well and good for a millionaire with a staff on retainer to think that she “has it all”, but that is an unrealistic message to send to young women. Just ask my wife. She has a loving husband, three great kids, a career working part-time as a pediatrician and an active community-involvement calendar. So, what does she lack? SLEEP.

Bottom line for young women: you can have any two of career, family and sleep, but to have all three, you’ll need to do some hiring.

Posted by: David on March 3, 2005 12:18 PM

Let me see if I've got this. By going to Harvard and telling people that, with enough confidence and ambition, you can overcome a tough childhood to have a decent career and a strong family, Ms. Pinkett Smith is grinding the faces of the GLBT crowd under the jackboot of heteronormativism? These people sound pretty heterophobic to me. I protest this flagrant display of devocentrism. Sheesh.

On a totally unrelated note, a friend of mine realized she was non-heteronormative after she began having impure thoughts about Tawny Kitaen on the hood of the Jag. Shame on you for not posting a pic, Ace. ;-)

Posted by: utron on March 3, 2005 12:22 PM

Yeah Ace, you really should've put a picture up. Otheriwse it'll appear that you are caving into the GLBT crowd.
First shamless pandering to CNN, now no Tawny, maybe now we know why his Gannonness snubbed you. Hmmm.

Jennifer:

"Bob Dole's Cock" Sounds like a Punk Band.

I think I was in that band in the '80's, though it's still all a drug-induced blur.

Posted by: 72VIRGINS on March 3, 2005 12:44 PM

This is a semi-serious question:

How can those stupid dykes (used purely for lesbian solidarity, I assure you) think that a HETEROSEXUAL woman be anything other than "heteronormative." (a $3 word for thinks about straight things).

Of COURSE she's "heteronormative"; she's hetero. (and blessedly so)

Do these idiots think she's going to talk about "queer issues" that she has no idea of or concern about?

What a bunch of spoiled, self-centered carpet munchers. It just goes to prove my thesis that militant homosexual activists (those who identify their sexuality as a political attribute) have simply enlarged narcissism to a political philosophy.

I might as well be offended that she didn't talk about the most effective way to scratch my own testicles.

Posted by: hobgoblin on March 3, 2005 12:45 PM

It is not the message; it is the tone, the tone, what is bothering you.

Posted by: El on March 3, 2005 01:04 PM

"Heteronormative" what the fuck is that? More scheming treachery from the Left to establish a new buzzword with which to beat conservatives with and shift the debate to the offensive with a single word, like "offended" or "african american." But like "Soch Security" or "Phase-out program" this word just doesn't have legs and won't go far.

Posted by: 72VIRGINS on March 3, 2005 01:08 PM

Kris,

The adoration of Madden et al is of the idol worship variety. Brett is a man among men. His relationship with Sapp is as one in the brotherhood of warriors. The fact that Brett has to associate with those 'light in the loafers' is only because the Vikings and Bears are in the same division.

Posted by: BrewFan on March 3, 2005 01:09 PM

Glad to hear that about Favre. The "not in a gay way, but like a Viking" option is closed to him, for obvious reasons.

Posted by: Paul Zrimsek on March 3, 2005 01:20 PM

I'm with Sean - I read this on the Crimson web site yesterday, and at the end of every paragraph I was yelling at the monitor:

"WHAT THE F*CK DID SHE SAY, YOU IDIOT??"

Harvard received this letter from Head of Faculty, University of Colorado at Boulder:

Dr & Ms. Forbes-Rothstien-Thistlewaite
Faculty Chair, Harvard University
Head, Heteronormative Re-education Outreach

On behalf of the faculty at CU, Boulder, I commend Harvard for helping take the heat off us a bit as we struggle for social justice and the new wave of McCartyism with the Ward Churchill misunderstanding. Bill Owens and other lesser educated yokels have the temerity to question our judgement and infer that white oppressor rubes have a say in matters over their heads. They wish to figuratively"fry" Professor Churchill, a brave progressive....as they literally fried the brave, progressive Rosenbergs the last time this insanity arose.

Having Harvard do a proper re-education of Lawrence Summers and launch him on a confession and apology tour was a huge boost to us in our dark hours dealing with the Colorado rabble and the Right-Wing. Your railing on Pinkett for her insensitivity to GLBT issues is inspiring. It is a shame we cannot simply lock up incorrect thinkers like Pinkett, at a location where she is forced to work with her hands to atone for her reactionary intellectualism by doing things like growing crops to feed the homeless.

And yes, I have also done quite well with heteronormative outreach. So far this year, 6 confused co-ed freshmen were convinced to let their inner lesbian out with me. And forgoe *spit* men.

Yours in solidarity,

Dr. Isador Katz Mustafa
Professor of Wymmens Literature & Wicca
Faculty Board Head, CU-Boulder
