"There's always the hope that this might not work"

Chris points out in the comments that, in the Jon Stewart interview, Soderbergh seems to put partisan interests ahead of American security:

"There's still Iran and North Korea, don't forget. There's hope for the rest of us. . .there's always the hope that this might not work."

Now, here's the reason I didn't seize on this: I imagine she said it with a smile on her face. I imagine she was being ironic, engaging in a bit of gallows humor.

I can't imagine that anyone close to respectable would say such a thing seriously.

So I give her a little latitude on that. I don't want my every ironic jibe treated as if I was stone-faced serious, and I don't want to say that Soderbergh was actually expressing the hopes of American failure here.

It's possible she was; certainly other leftist journalists have confessed, proudly, to openly rooting for American deaths and American failures in order to advance a partisan agenda.

But somehow, given the forum, given the semi-comic banter between them, I figure Soderbergh was just indulging in a bit of dark irony. Something I don't think should be discouraged-- the left seems to have lost its sense of humor entirely since...

Well, I'm not sure they ever had much of a sense of humor. But they've gone all Sean Penn on us these past four years.

Instapundit seems to take it somewhat seriously; Junk Yard Blog hopes she was joking.

I'll have to see the tape to confirm she was being ironic. But that's my suspicion at the moment.

On the other hand... It's always somewhat sketchy to "joke" about something you actually, in your heart of hearts, truly believe or desire. Because then you're not really joking; you're using the form of a joke to express a thought that would be otherwise embarassing.

Al Franken, Cursed Be His Name Forever, actually has a cute term for this: "kidding on the square." You're kidding, kind of, in the sense that you're saying it in a funny way, but you're on the square-- you actually pretty much mean it.

I think Soderbergh was being ironic, just joking around, just using the sort of black humor I enjoy myself on the occasion. But I think, too, she probably meant it.

But I can't really prove that. So I giver her a pass. For now.

Well, you're a better man than I am, Ace (that's why you're the only important one on this stage). So I'll try to track down the video. But even joking, it's still a reprehensible thing to say.

Sheesh, Ace, I feel as though I'm live-blogging your posts!

Keep it coming.

You just got mentioned on Inside Politics with Judy Woodruff on CNN.

It was about the "cold, dead hands" comments RE: Senator Stevens.

Posted by: Birkel on March 2, 2005 04:04 PM

Are you joking?

Ace of Spades was specifically mentioned?

Posted by: ace on March 2, 2005 04:06 PM

She may have been saying that sort of tongue and cheek but the history of these types of quotes by MSM reporters as well as Dem Congress critters are well documented. It seems thier modis operandi is "if it's bad for Republicans, it's good for Democrats, the country be damned". I posted about this at http://thekaostheory.blogspot.com/

Posted by: kaos on March 2, 2005 04:07 PM

Dude, its only CNN, that's like getting mentioned on NY1 or Air America.
When Hume is quoting Ace then you've made it baby!
Until then

I'm quite serious.

It was during the "What bloggers are saying" segment just after the President's bit with the Red Sox.

No BS.

Posted by: Birkel on March 2, 2005 04:15 PM

I think Soderberg was probably "kidding on the square." That bit about pinning her hopes on North Korea and Iran gives the game away, ihmo.

Posted by: jyb on March 2, 2005 04:19 PM

given their backgrounds, and the NK mention in the piece, i took it as serious

Posted by: johnny on March 2, 2005 05:29 PM

It's tough to say from the transcript. Context can go either way. Rather than string her up immediately, we shold likely approach her statement as something akin to a bad Maher joke (or "joking on the square), in that she has plausible deniability. Get her to repeat that she hopes the norks win, and we'll have paydirt.

Posted by: hobgoblin on March 2, 2005 05:43 PM

"Kidding on the square" is an old expression in the Midwest, at least. Please don't credit Franken. For anything.

During the interview Jon Stewart reached for a metaphor that may reveal more than he intended. He compared the Republican Party to a stern Daddy - and the average Democrat to a whiny, wayward kid. Needless to say, he empathized with the kid.

When I hear Democrats on the radio or read their comments, they always sound like adolescents to me. Apparently they sound that way to themselves, too.

They will be rerunning last nights Stewart-Soderberg interview at 6:00 Centeral.

Posted by: Rich on March 2, 2005 06:28 PM

I watched the interview last night - Soderberg seemed to force herself to make the point in jest to match Stewart's newfound optimism. He covered for her comments by fleshing out the latent humor in them, but she delivered the Iraq/North Korea point with a very awkward smile and a tone of unenthusiastic apprehension; I got the distinct impression that she would have liked to make it a serious point of conversation. Her dismal commentary at the outset of the interview compounds the notion that at her heart, Soderberg is very much an internationalist who wouldn't mind seeing Bush being knocked down a peg or two at America's collective expense.

Posted by: Dandon on March 2, 2005 07:03 PM

It should be on at 11:30 EST/PST if you missed the 7pm rebroadcast.

I had it on in the background last night - wasn't really watching it, but I definitely picked up on JS's shock and awe that this might be working.

caught it last night. the wife was agape at what the woman said. she may have been trying to "jest," but it was clear she was serious underneath.

That's a baaaaadd place to be.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.

Oof. Reviewers do not like Scary Movie 6. The criticism I keep hearing is that the movie mistakes a reference for an actual joke. The movie (they say) keeps Key Jangling a reference to another movie (or some other pop culture ephemera) and you expect there to be a joke but nope, the Key Jangle was the joke. Other reviewers say that the promise that "no lines will be uncrossed" is a fake-out, and that the movie is bland and inoffensively corporate.
