Paradigm Shift Goes Pan-Arabic: Now Even the Arab Press Begins to Wonder

Must read. But here are the best bits:

Beirut drama dominates Arab media

By Sebastian Usher

Newspapers in Lebanon have greeted the fall of the government on Monday as a historic moment and proof of people power on the streets of Lebanon.
...

The opposition movement in Lebanon has been inescapable on Arab TV stations, which have brought the dramatic events of the past two weeks since the assassination of the country's former Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri, live into millions of Arab homes.

The front pages of Lebanon's papers are a colourful sea of triumphant protesters holding aloft the Lebanese flag.

"People power brings down Karami's cabinet", reads the headline in the Daily Star.

...

[W]ith Arab satellite stations focusing so intensely on Lebanon, there is little chance that the symbolism of the opposition's victory has been lost on the wider Arab world, including Syria.

Arab newspapers are weighing up the possible knock-on effect of events in Lebanon on other Arab states, asking whether it is the precursor of the spread of genuine democracy across the region.

I'll let that sink in for a moment.

And then I'll repeat it:

Arab newspapers are weighing up the possible knock-on effect of events in Lebanon on other Arab states, asking whether it is the precursor of the spread of genuine democracy across the region.

All emphases added.

And here's the kicker:

That article ran on the BBC website.

I am now, I think, even more disrespectful of the media than I was before.

Yes, they are dutifully reporting the new optimism.

But they do seem to be stampeding, don't they? It doesn't take much to spook this herd and get it to change direction.

I think I'd actually have more respect for them if they didn't back down from years of previous group-think so quickly. At least that would have demonstrated some spine, or something.

Ace:"But they do seem to be stampeding, don't they? It doesn't take much to spook this herd and get it to change direction."

Is this sarcasm? It took winning a war in Afghanistan, a war in Iraq, free elections in Palestine and the Ukraine, and anti Syrian demonstrations in Lebanon just to get the BBC to admit that some Arab newspapers might be questioning the fact that something might be going on. I know that the BBC arent the only MSM out their saying this, but i would be willing to bet that it will be at least 10 years from now before anyone in the MSM will give Bush credit for all the changes in the middle east. Only after he is well out of office and then only if everything goes off perfecrly. No civil wars. No new dictators.

Dammit, freedom is breaking out everywhere and it's all Bush's fault. Damn cowboy!

"It doesn't take much to spook this herd and get it to change direction." Tom Wicker of the NYT said that most reporters spend all their time sitting at the bar of the local Hilton Hotel drinking, so they don't actually see much in the middle east. They pay local stringers to do their job for them and how far they are willing to put their asses on the line is questionable too. Perhaps the local stringers have caught the optimism of the revoloution taking place there. But the one thing that we can all count on is that no matter what direction this herd runs, it will not be in praise of W.

I wouldn't have more respect for them,if they recanted everything while standing on their collective heads.Whether one ascribes their performance to bias, stupidity, carelessness,or just sheer lazyness, the results are the same.
The world needs and deserves better.

I question the timing.

Modern Enlightened Thought has it that there is no True and False, only oppressors and the oppressed. (Lord Voldemort is a leading proponent of this view.) But when an idea, like, say, Mideastern democracy, can sweep away decades of propaganda for the contrary idea in just a few weeks, it makes you wonder. Maybe it doesn't prove that True and False exist. But it does seem to indicate that ideas fall into two categories, whatever you call the categories.

"Arab newspapers are ... asking whether it is the precursor of the spread of genuine democracy across the region."

Though peace has been threatening to break out in the middle east for decades, this is really exciting news! Praise God!

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.

Oof. Reviewers do not like Scary Movie 6. The criticism I keep hearing is that the movie mistakes a reference for an actual joke. The movie (they say) keeps Key Jangling a reference to another movie (or some other pop culture ephemera) and you expect there to be a joke but nope, the Key Jangle was the joke. Other reviewers say that the promise that "no lines will be uncrossed" is a fake-out, and that the movie is bland and inoffensively corporate.
