Hot Rude Chat!

... of the poltical-dissing sort.

Rod Nordland, Newsweek's bureau chief in Baghdad, is probably a bit of a prick but he's in good form here insulting just about every questioner during a live chat. Be aware that he criticizes both the left and right. He is fair-and-balanced in his terse snideness:

Question: "Dirty bomb. Wow, Zarqawi might have one dirty bomb. The U.S. has been shooting off nuclear waste all over Iraq in this Gulf War, and in the last one too. So who is the real terrorist here?"

Answer: "What a poorly informed question."

...

Question: "why does Bush care so much about what happens in Iraq when there are so many poor, sick, poverty-stricken people in the U.S.?"

Answer: "Who said he cares? "

...

Question: "Do you, Masland and Dickey mean "F---ing Murderers" when you say "insurgents" and "fighters" in your STUPIDITY? I've grown sick and tired of you "politically incorrect" reporters. Why don't you have the gumption to call a spade a spade?"

Answer: "OK, you're an idiot. How's that?"

Sort of amusing. On one hand, I wonder why he bothered to do a live chat if his attitude was so clearly disdainful of those daring to question him.

On the other hand, though, it's pretty stupid to suggest that Newsweek begin calling terrorists "FUCKING MURDERERS." I mean, look, sure it's the right basic idea, but it's just an idiotic question, isn't it?

I would never be in the position of fielding questions in a live chat since I'm just trailer trash. But if I *were* I would be every bit as disdainful and then some. The questioners obviously have no manners, whatever their views.

This is the same attitude that pervaded discourse when I was growing up (and still pervades the common discourse) - the snidest, meanest, most petulent looks wise, smart, and insightful.

So yeah, it's funny. But it's a rose by another name.

On the other hand, I'd rather see an honest answer to the last question.

yes, I see your point; it is a bit high-school snide, isn't it?

Still, several of the questioners are clearly misinformed, and he deals with them the way they probably should be dealt with.

As for calling terrorists "fucking murderers" --

well, seriously, we can call them that here, but I don't think that's the way a serious news site should term them.

As for murderers-- well, yeah, they are murderers, and it gets annoying that the media won't call them that.

They have no problem with calling racial-killers murderers, even though those racial-killers might think they're fighting for some "cause." So why do they call racial killers by their proper name -- murderers -- and yet feel the need to avoid judgment with terrorists?

I can just see the front page of Newsweek:

Fucking Murderers Suspected in String of Bombings

Coooool.

While it was funny to read, and I do realize that a good number of questions were pretty stupid, he seems to be something of a douche.

Posted by: Xoxotl on February 21, 2005 11:30 PM

Actually, I'm kind of surprised that a bunch of those questions were let in - I figured those kinds of chats were a lot more heavily moderated than that.

On the other hand, his last entry seemed fairly accurate:

"Thanks for your questions.  I have tried to answer them in the spirit they seem to have been offered."

I won't comment about the 2nd and 3rd questions, but the 1st was clearly moronic. Sure there's a bunch of DU laying around on battlefields, but its about as "hot" as ordinary lead. The Amerecium used in garden variety smoke detectors on your wall or ceiling is a LOT hotter than DU.

Rod Nordland went to far in the last response but I gotta hand it to him, that was a great line!

I'd like them to be called "rebels" kind of like in Star Wars and the Rebel Alliance.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
