Guess I Should Have Mentioned I'd Be Out Most of the Day

...but it never occurred to me I'd be out all day.

A friend from Spain wanted me to check out an apartment he's thinking about subletting. Trouble is, it's way out in the boonies. Forgot the trains are running on a weekend schedule today. Also didn't count on the guy showing me the apartment to not be around for an hour-- and hour I had to spend wasting time in bodegas, comparing the carb content of cheddar Combos to Spicy Pizza Combos.

All done now... will try to make up for lack of the day's posting by being especially insightful and/or funny and/or juvenile.

Or, more likely, I'll just throw up a lot of crap and hope some people confuse quantity with quality.

Then again, the day's almost wasted anyway, isn't it?

What's on TV tonight?

Say... I'm trying to upload pics for both my friend and for this site from CPAC, but all the pics are way too memory-intensive (over 1.3 MB). Is there some way to reduce the quality and such of the pics? Is there some compression feature I'm supposed to be using?

Nevermind: Figured it out. Thanks to all who offered advice.

What's on TV??? Do you live in a cave? "American Idol" and "24" are both on tonight.

I'm as happy as a little girl!

Hey,

Your day could have been worse. At least you weren't:

a) pinned down by enemy fire, desparately trying to hold down the flank.

b) having a baby.

c) waiting for the election returns on your bid for the White House.

d) awakened by the sad realization that you are really a liberal.

So....count your blessings.

Well, in photoshop and other pic resizing programs, there should be a "save for web" option that reduces it to a manageable jpg.

I typically keep my pics no wider than 500 pixels by 400 pixels high for actual size (not density).

Posted by: Bill from INDC on February 21, 2005 07:33 PM

Cheese, having a baby is a good day.

Ace, a sneaky solution: open a shutterfly account, upload your pictures, and then copy and paste the (largish) thumbnails they create for you to your hard drive. As I recall they're about 60-70k.

There are probably other ways to do this using software, but I don't even know if you have a mac or PC let alone what's on it. This way's pretty simple.

(You can also send them to my other account, not the address above, and I'll shrink 'em for you later tonight. Send them one at a time.)

I vote for juvenile!!!!!

One of the easiest ways to shrink the size of photos is to open them in MS Pain(t) (!) and then go to Edit--->Resize--->and make the percentages equal (Like 50%) Then Save As a JPEG, find the "advanced" tab and pick your compression. No fancy programs needed and every computer runs MS Pain(t)

And where's Dusty!

Ace, What have you done with her!?!

Posted by: hobgoblin on February 21, 2005 07:49 PM

Thanks, I think I've figured it out.

Re: Dusty

Unfortunately, I think that was just a week-long ad. Hopefully they'll buy another couple of weeks.

I miss her too.

Applications: Photoshop, Paint or PhotoDraw.
Photoshop:
- Image-image size- 512x384 px (picture size will be 5x7 inches, resolution 72). If you desire smaller try 300x300 px. (jpg)
- Save for web: chose optimized or play with 2-up, 4-up (gif)
Paint: image-attributes- chose size W&D in px or inches, works approx. 500x380 px
PhotoDraw: same approach.
Size relates to speed of picture downloading. By the way you still have email version from your digital camera, which is smaller of course.

See-Dubya,

Not if it a *guy* is having it!

But you are right - I did word it ambiguously, and I regret the confusion. My apologies.

NOTHING is on tv, Ace. Hubby has the controller tonight. No Idol ... no 24 (for me.) I could join him and watch The Natural for the bazillionth time. Don't you men ever get sick of that movie.

Posted by: carin on February 21, 2005 08:27 PM

Ace, didn't you get some image editing program after the photoshop thread a while back? Resize and edit the jpeg compression.

We could castigate the leftists for their hypocracy re the UN-Congo Child Porn Scandal vis-a-vis the Abu Graib prison scandal.

Or we can comment on how Paula Abdul is finally growing a spine versus Simon.

Ace:

Photoshop etc. are overkill for what you need. Go to irfanview.com, and download the program. It is free, and is the most useful cross-platform image editing software around. It will resample any image (like from your camera) down to a web-friendly size, and you can do basic things like crop it, too.

Web images use 100 dpi maximum (dots per inch). Monitors are either 72 dpi or 96 dpi, so any resolution above that is not viewable on the screen. It's wasted.

Trust the Irfanview. You'll find yourself using it all the time.

... in other words, what River Rat said.

Posted by: George at Snapshot on February 21, 2005 09:24 PM

Yeah, whatever. We're still waiting for the clips from your radio appearance.

Posted by: See-Dubya on February 21, 2005 09:30 PM

Sir,

It sounds like the pictures you have might be "bitmap". If this is the case, convert them to jpeg (go to your help section, type keywords: convert bitmap jpeg).

Hey Ace,

Get the image resizer from microsoft. It's free!!
Get at the MSN download center under powertoys. After you install (fairly easy, but I'm mostly techie so my judgement may be suspect) you can resize by right-clicking. A BIG time-saver if you resize often.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
