Bring the Boys Back Home?

It's too early to call for this yet; but it's not really too early to debate what should be done, if the nearly-inevitable begins to happen.

I'm talking about the very real possibility of radical Muslim psychopaths targeting our soldiers and aid-workers conducting tsunami relief, especially in the Aceh province.

What then?

Rant Wraith wants to know if the New York Times and other liberal institutions will begin reading the names of the dead on a nightly basis should this insane horror come to pass.

I don't want to sound cold-hearted, but if that does happen, I say: Pull out. Immediately. There is a limit to American generosity. And if it should happen that an aid worker or soldier is captured and held for ransom as he or she is attempting to rebuild these ravaged lands, that's enough for me.

We tried. Trying satisfies me.

So far, just a few arrows.

But if it does happen, we will NOT hear calls to bring them home. No, what we'll hear is how we've been insufficiently sensitive in how we delivered the aid, such as giving it directly to a starving, unveiled woman rather than her fat husband.

Ace:

I agree with you - but can we bring our military and aid workers home from Iraq at the same time and for the same reason?

That's a great question stevesturm.
I have the same question.

Posted by: Ryan on January 11, 2005 04:06 PM

I completely agree with Tall Dave. You'll never hear the MSM saying we should pull out. It's only when the U.S. uses its military force to act in its own interest that the MSM goes on about quagmires.

Posted by: Zelda on January 11, 2005 04:12 PM

If it does happen, we should move our forces to countries that don't attack us. After we take everything back. Let the MSM deliver aid to the terrorists. They're doing it now anyway.

Posted by: Iblis on January 11, 2005 04:25 PM

Ace,

Disagree with you on this one. The terrorists don't get to dictate our actions in war or peace. They don't want us there helping the folks in need and demonstrating our compassion? That is reason enough to redouble our efforts militarily and charitably.

Posted by: Max Power on January 11, 2005 04:35 PM

I don't know. I get tired of it. I get tired of their idea that they can kill us and butcher us and that there will never be consequences.

I think bugging out would demonstrate that we are not patsies, and that there are consequences for barbaric behavior.

Posted by: ace on January 11, 2005 04:44 PM

We can't let terrorists dictate our aid policies, but at what point do we say enough is enough? We can't go on indefinately taking casualties to give aid to people who won't even protect us or themselves, but if we pull out who pulls in, the terrorists? This is indeed a tough call ACE.

Posted by: 72VIRGINS on January 11, 2005 05:10 PM

I admit it. Sometimes I fantasize about isolationism.

Posted by: julie on January 11, 2005 05:33 PM

The lesson of Somalia must also be remembered. In 1998 OBL said in an interview that because of Somalia that: "our boys ... realized that the American soldier was just a paper tiger ... after a few blows [the US] rushed out of Somalia in shame and disgrace, dragging the bodies of its soldiers." But in the end, if we can't protect our people, and they can't protect our people, we can't go on forever letting them kill us, either. As always, it comes down to how many casualties are we willing to bear to acheive our ends.

Posted by: 72VIRGINS on January 11, 2005 05:45 PM

Steve Sturm and Ryan,

We cannot pull troops and aid workers out of Iraq for the same reasons, because they are there for different reasons.

In the case of the tsunami, we didn't cause the problem, we are just trying to fix it. If the locals don't want us there, then they don't want us there. The reason for leaving would be lack of gratitude.

In the case of Iraq, we did cause the big problem (i.e. removal of a government). The reason for leaving would be the admission of failure and/or cowardice.

Also, pulling out of S.E. Asia would not leave the place worse than we found it.

Posted by: Sobek on January 11, 2005 07:45 PM

It's worse than it looks in Aceh. The Indonesian military, which is supposed to be protecting the unarmed aid workers, has ties to some of the Islamist groups that are threatening the workers.

More here.

Remember how she said that

Some sunny day?

Posted by: JD on January 11, 2005 09:19 PM

If Islamofascists attack our military and aid workers in SE Asia, we would have every right to pull out and move to an area where such help is appreciated.

The difference in Iraq is that it is a location of our choice, not their's. The fascists are free to attack us anywhere but have chosen to take the battle to us in Iraq. So much the better, better than on our shores (which they have already breached multiple times and will undoubtedly breach again).

The point is, as long as we can keep them busy elsewhere, and can make progress in rendering them as harmless as can be, we will still hold the higher moral ground (Allah notwithstanding).

I don't see them, however, as taking hostages for ransom. Expect to see odious, hideous and outrageous murders in the next few weeks as their brand of mercy takes hold and shows compassion for the weak and needy.

Vera! Vera! What has become of you?
Does anybody else in here feel the way I do?

Gotta love Roger..

Posted by: Buddy on January 12, 2005 09:59 AM

I'm with you Ace.
Though it would probably be misinterpreted as weakness by the enemy, that seems of secondary importance in a humanitarian mission.

Mainly I imagine my little brother (now a Marine), being killed by people he was trying to feed.

Fuck that noise.

Posted by: lauraw on January 12, 2005 10:07 AM

If we start taking casualties and can't protect our people and they won't either, we should get out fast. And we should pull out before it turns into another drawn out media-circus like Somalia. After all, the mission is not that important to us anyway.

Posted by: 72VIRGINS on January 12, 2005 11:47 AM

Two things come out quite clearly here:

1) All dark-skinned people are terrorists who will cut off their noses to spite their faces

and

2) The US will only help those who universally show an adequate level of praise and gratitude.

Don't your high 'moral values' dictate that aid should be given to those in need without seeking praise or reward for your actions?

Posted by: Adamant on January 12, 2005 02:00 PM

Who cares about gratitude? We're not talking about ingratitude, we're talking about murdering our aid-providers.

Listen, if you're starving and I bring you groceries, just keeping you alive is gratitude enogh for me, I don't care if you thank me or not. But don't take the groceries and then shoot me in the back, 'K??

Oh and keep up the race-baiting. We need another win in '08!

Posted by: lauraw on January 12, 2005 03:37 PM

Actually, Sobek (above) WAS talking about gratitude, OK. Take a look.

Again - which recipient of aid has been shooting?

You accuse me of race baiting but the attitude shown here is S.E. Asian = Moslem = terrorist.

Why else are you all equating aid recipients with terrorists?

Posted by: Adamant on January 12, 2005 04:00 PM

Adamant says, "You accuse me of race baiting but the attitude shown here is S.E. Asian = Moslem = terrorist."

You seem confused. Our problem is with radical Islam, not skin color. It was said before, but I'll say it again: keep up the race baiting, we'll get another win in '08.

Megyn Kelly finally calls out Candace Owens
Whoops, I meant she bravely attacks Sydney Sweeney for "bending the knee." (Sweeney put out a very empty PR statement saying "I'm against hate." Whoop-de-doo.)
Megyn Kelly claims she doesn't want to call people out on the right when asked about Candace Owens but then has no compunctions at all about calling people out on the right.
As long as they're not Candace Owens. Strangely, she seems blind and deaf to anything Candace Owens says. That's why this woman calls her "Megyn Keller."
She's now asking her pay-pigs in Pakistan how they think she should address the Candace Owens situation, and if they think this is really all about Israel and the Jews.

I'd wanted to review Parts 2, 3, and 4 of Ryan Lizza's revenge posts about Olivia Nuzzi, but they're all paywalled. I thought about briefly subscribing to get at them, but then I read this in Part 2:
Remember the bamboo from Part 1?

Do I ever! It's all I remember!
Well, bamboo is actually a type of grass, and underground, it's all connected in a sprawling network, just like the parts of this story I never wanted to tell. I wish I hadn't been put in this position, that I didn't have to write about any of this, that I didn't have to subject myself or my loved ones to embarrassment and further loss of privacy.

We're back to the fucking bamboo. Guys, I don't think I can pay for bamboo ruminations.
I think he added that because he was embarrassed about all the bamboo imagery from Part 1. He's justifying his twin obsessions: His ex, and bamboo. Which is not a tree but a kind of grass, he'll have you know.
Olivia Nuzzi's crappy Sex and the City fanfic book isn't selling, says CNN (and CNN seems pretty pleased about that)
On Tuesday, the book arrived in stores. At lunchtime, in the Midtown Manhattan nexus of media and publishing, interest in Nuzzi's story seemed more muted. The Barnes and Noble on Fifth Avenue had seven copies tucked into a "New & Notable" rack next to the escalator, below Malala Yousafzai's "Finding My Way." Not many had sold so far, a store employee said.

A few blocks uptown, at a branch of the local independent chain McNally Jackson Books, a few volumes lay on a table of new and noteworthy nonfiction near the front of the store. No one was lining up to get them, or even browsing. Bookseller Alex Howe told CNN around 3 p.m. that though the store had procured "several dozen" copies, not a single one had yet sold -- a figure he said was surprising, considering how many people in media and publishing work in the area.

"We ordered a lot and so far, people have not been beating down the door," Howe said. "I'm not sure where we're gonna put them because right now, supply is outpacing demand." (A manager at McNally Jackson noted that Howe was speaking only in a personal capacity, not as a representative of the store.)

She trashes Ryan Lizza for his "Revenge Porn" here. Emily Jashinsky says that when the Bulwark's gay grifter Tim Miller asked why she didn't report on the (alleged) use of ketamine by RFKJr., she broke down in tears and asked to end the interview.
