Lethal Longshot

Marine Sniper scores longest-ranged confirmed kill in Iraq.

Martin Riggs? Pussy!:

AR RAMADI, Iraq (Jan. 02, 2005) -- Seen through a twenty-power spot scope, terrorists scrambled to deliver another mortar round into the tube. Across the Euphrates River from a concealed rooftop, the Marine sniper breathed gently and then squeezed a few pounds of pressure to the delicate trigger of the M40A3 sniper rifle in his grasp.

The rifle's crack froze the booming Fallujah battle like a photograph. As he moved the bolt back to load another round of 7.62mm ammunition, the sniper's spotter confirmed the terrorist went down from the shot mere seconds before the next crack of the rifle dropped another.

It wasn't the sniper's first kill in Iraq, but it was one for the history books.

...

"From the information we have, our chief scout sniper has the longest confirmed kill in Iraq so far," said Capt. Shayne McGinty, weapons platoon commander for "Bravo" Co. "In Fallujah there were some bad guys firing mortars at us and he took them out from more than 1,000 yards."

...

"After we had called in indirect fire and after all the adjustments from our mortars, I got the final 8-digit grid coordinates for the enemy mortar position, looked at our own position using GPS and figured out the distance to the targets we dropped to be 1,050 yards," said Flowers with a grin. "This time we were killing terrorism from more than 1,000 yards."

Read the whole thing. Frankly, I've been surprised we haven't been able to take better advantage of our awesome advantages in sniper-skills.

Thanks to NickS.

I'm surprised they're still using .308 for such distances. The Secret Service counter-sniping team switched to 7mm mag and 300 Win mag awhile ago. Amazing as it is, there were a few 1000 yd confirmed kills in WWII and Korea with those old optics! (See the book One Shot One Kill.)

A reservist too. Kick ass.

Oh, and go figure I get a link from Michelle Malkin right at the beginning of my vacation, one that I don't even notice for about 5 days after it happened. *sighs*

Thanks though Ace for the hat tip that led to her link!!

As amazing as it is, get a load of this: Marine super-sniper Carlos Hathcock scored a confirmed kill in Vietnam from 2,500 yards away.

2,500 yards.

Anyone interested in Carlos N. Hathcock owes it to themselves to read Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills by Charles Henderson.

Wow. So that's what you can accomplish when you field a +7 Rifle Of Infinite Justice.

Very impressive.

No wonder the islamabaddies are sticking to blowing up Iraqi policemen nowadays.

Not to denigrate this Marine's shot, nor to equate combat sniping with target competition, but some may not know that 1000 yard shooting is not all that uncommon. See...

Nice that the Marines are skilled at long-range shooting, but the number of insurgents has grown in a year from 5,000 to 25-30,000 by Iraqi Interim Gov't estimates. Most are well-trained ex-Iraqi military, evidently whiling away their unemployment time.

Now, the snipers are great and bless 'em, but better than a marine sniper squad would be just one reliable informant....

Maybe the military should hire you to give them advice about how to do their job.

Here's a moving tribute to "The Man".

To Allah: That 2,500 yd kill by Carlos Hathcock was done with a single .50 BMG shot, not a .308. As .50 sniper rifles are becoming more common so are 1 mile shots.

If sniper stuff floats your boat, you might like Stephen Hunter's "Time to Hunt." It's kind of Ramboish, but I thought it was quite enjoyable and interesting.

A Canadian sniper team in Afghanistan made a kill at over 2600 yards.
The first shot blew a bag from the hand of their target, an Al Qaeda fighter walking on a road.

"He didn't even flinch," said Bill, who spoke on condition that his real name not be used.

"We made a correction and the next round hit exactly where we wanted it to. Well, a bit to the right."

The kill, one of more than 20 unofficially accredited to Canadian snipers during Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan's Shah-i-Kot Valley, beat the 35-year-old record of 2,500 yards, or 2,250 metres, set by U.S. Marine Gunnery Sgt. Carlos Hathcock in Duc Pho, South Vietnam.

It's nice that he nailed a Haji from a distance but, who was the idiot who decided to publish this story?
It's garanteed that he has a price on his head now.
Why do think we remain anonymous when we take our shots?

Posted by: Satan on January 6, 2005 12:26 PM

The Marines published it. I guess they figure they can defend their own.

Posted by: The Moose on January 6, 2005 01:34 PM

"Most are well-trained ex-Iraqi military"

....that's funny.

Posted by: Master of None on January 6, 2005 01:36 PM

Moose, that's incredible. Don't they real;ize what these animals will do to that man if he were captured?
The stinkin Corp continues to amaze me.

Posted by: Satan on January 6, 2005 02:22 PM

It doesn't matter to the enemy if captured personnel are marine snipers, or whatever.

That lady they found disemboweled and delimbed in Fallujah was an aid worker loved by the Iraqis.

So from the Marines' viewpoint, why bother keeping the secret?

Posted by: lauraw on January 6, 2005 02:41 PM

No lauraw, disemboweling is nothing compared to what could be done. You have to remember that these people have gone by the Koran so far.
Eventually, they're going to get creative. Gut cutting, loping, burning people alive.
Unfortunately, the list is endless. They haven't even begun to get ruthless yet.

Tomorrow is March 25th, "Tolkien Reading Day," because March 25th is the day when the Ring is destroyed in the book. I think I'm going to start the Hobbit tomorrow and read all four books this time.
The only bad part of the trilogy are the Frodo/Sam chapters in The Two Towers. They're repetitive, slow, and mostly about the weather and terrain. But most everything else is good. Weirdly, the Frodo-Sam chapters in Return of the King are exciting and action-packed and among the best in the trilogy. (Though the chapters with everyone else in Return of the King get pretty slow again. Mostly people talking about marching towards war, and then marching towards war.)

It's a heavily armored (the pilot sits in a titanim bathtub) slow-and-low loitering plane with a massive minigun firing depleted uranium rounds. The capability it brings is the ability to just fly big circles over the country waiting for a target to present itself. This is a weapons platform for eliminating vehicles and personnel. Its first task might be strafing the seas, clearing out any remaining attack boats and minelayers.
Update: My ballpark estimate for a reasonable cost for a wildlife overpass (suitably padded to sate the thirst of Democrat grifters) was $15 million. Turns out, that was a good estimate. That's how much it cost Denver to build one.

Some people liked Candace Owens because she was a black woman who told hard truths about BLM and black criminality. But this was always a grift. She started out as a race hustler for a grift, then hustled race the other way to grift conservatives, and now she's back to being a race-hustler for the left again. Specifically, she is now claiming that people pointing out that she is legitimately low-IQ and can't pronounce half the words her AI-generated teleprompter script points out to her is racist and just Ben Shapiro's way of saying the n-word without quite saying it. You see, you can only say that black people are smart, and if you see a dumb one that doesn't know how to pronounce simple words while she poses as an investigatory journalist, you have to pretend she's actually smart or you're a racist. Weird, that doesn't sound very conservative, let alone "#Based," to me. To prove how much she hates racism, she then says that Ben Shapiro's Jew ancestors were masters of the slave trade.
