One of the reasons we've been hanging around the outskirts for so long is to take the fullest advantage of our recon assets. We know about the UAVs, the predator drones. We also have unmanned ground vehicles.
Another reason for the delay is to get as many noncombatants as possible out of the way.
In my war, to find out what was around a corner we had to send a squad and see if anybody shot at us. Today we have sensors that can detect body heat through walls. We send an unmanned vehicle down the street and look at the pictures, then drop a bomb or put an artillery shell through anything suspicious.
We have sensors that can detect the presence of the common explosives as well.
It's telling that the only guys we've lost taking the bridges and that hospital were two men that died in a vehicle accident.
Our military in general and the Marine Corps particularly have been studying urban warfare for decades now. We've spent bazillions of dollars devising equipment that no other country in the world can buy.
This is not simply a battle to take a city away from the gomers, it's an object lesson for the entire world. We'll be expending munitions more than men. If our guys suspect an IED they'll shoot a rocket, artillery shell or bomb at it before they get close.
If they see the heat signatures of bodies in a building they'll send a tank round through.
While there is always the possibility of bad luck or carelessness I'll be very surprised if we lose three dozen KIA.
