Polls: Bush Up Nationally, Trails in Ohio, But Can Capture Three Gore States for Win

Ohio remains the key. If Bush holds Ohio and Florida, he wins. It's that simple.

If he loses Ohio, he could still win, but he'd have to draw to pick up the straight.

Time now shows a 5 point Bush lead. Gone are the heady days of double-digit leads, but a lead is still a lead. 51% Bush, 46% Kerry-- and, unless my math has gotten very bad indeed, it seems to me that no number of "undecideds breaking for the challenger" can beat a man who's getting a majority of the decided vote.

Now, I still believe that anyone who wins the popular vote by 4 points or more pretty much must win the electoral college. (Alarming News disagrees, but why should we listen to her? She's merely some sort of campaign official for some important Republican candidate.) But I guess that rule might break down when a particularly important state is heading in a direction contrary to what might be expected.

In any other year, if the Republican is ahead by 3 or 4 points, the Republican wins Ohio, easily. But Ohio has been particularly hurt by the recession and slow job creation of much of the recovery. And Ohio just might go to Kerry.

This Washington Times reports on Bush's strength in Gore states Iowa, Wisconsin, New Mexico, and even Minnesota. Bush can afford to lose Ohio-- barely. Just barely.

Gotta win Ohio, though. If we lose Ohio, we're in for a very long night, and worse yet, one that probably won't have a happy ending.

Bob Taft, the incredibly unpopular Republican governor in Ohio, is the real cause of Bush's dragging numbers in that state.

Jersey returns come in early. If Bush wins Jersey, I pop open the champagne immediately.

Stop panicking.Ohio is not essential even though I would be surprised if Bush lost it.
All that has to happen, given no other losses from 2000,is to win 1(1 only) of Win,Minn,OR Iowa+New Mexico.
If he is winning the popular vote by 2-3 points, those votes have to occurring elsewhere than Ohio so the odds are VERY VERY GOOD.

BIG NEWS UPDATE NOT FIRED

From her lawyer

"The irresponsible reports that have been published stating that Maria Bartiromo was fired or is no longer an employee of Fox are absolutely and unequivocally false," Freedman said Friday. "Make no mistake, we have the receipts and witnesses and they will come out whether through the courthouse or otherwise."

He added: "Those reporting her firing or the incredulous facts supporting that fiction have exhibited a complete and utter reckless disregard for the truth."

from anon2020
So what, she quit?
Megyn Kelly (accursed be her name) used to say all the time that Fox has a top female PR person who is a nasty pitbull and leaks nasty claims about anyone Fox is at war with, including those who have left the network. So I guess maybe she technically resigned? I don't know.
NEW: @FoxNews has obtained Lindsay Clancy defense attorney Kevin Reddington's appeal filing to the MA Supreme Court, which includes Reddington accusing the lone holdout juror of being "biased" against those with "debilitating mental illness", which he says is a protected category.

Holiday Break: I've had a rough couple of weeks -- the shoulder is healing now and I'm finally getting decent sleep -- and I've decided to take a long weekend.
I'm taking Friday off, and then Monday off, too.
I have Open Threads for both days and I will post if big news breaks, but if it doesn't -- and it probably won't, news is slow before a holiday weekend -- I'm going to take a four day weekend.

1977 interview shows that Barbara Walters has always been a seaward and Dolly Parton always had "country class"
Walters actually asks Dolly Parton if she knows that people think she's a joke. This because Walters can't get over the fact that a show-woman has 1, big breasts, and 2, dresses a bit outrageously because, get this, she's an entertainer. A stage performer. You know, someone people pay money to see live and expect them to put on a show.
She never would attack Liberace for wearing glitter-tuxedos. But she's mad that Dolly Parton makes Barbara Walters look bad through association (by being a woman). Babs, you wish people associated the two of you. Believe me, we can tell the difference.
