Victory in OzJohn Howard Prevails in Australia; Increases His Ruling Majority The media always looks to elections in the West for tea leaves for our own election. Frankly, I don't think there's much correlation. Still, it looks like the war is less popular in Australia than here at home and yet the public decided to stick with the more aggressive man in the war on terror. Australia has fought side by side with us in every war since at least WWII. Good on 'em. Thanks to Stan. posted by Ace at 11:34 AM
CommentsThe Australians, and New Zealanders, were technically our allies in WWI as well, being part of the British Commonwealth. As a result of the butchery at Gallipoli, the ANZAC forces suffered brutally in WWI, and ever since Australia has generally been highly hesitant about involvement in any war. Churchill was critical of the Australian government for refusing to institute conscription AFTER Pearl Harbor. This makes the Australian vote all the more significant. Perhaps the Aussie have been loyals allies is that we fought side by side during WWII. Many Americans were stationed in Australia during the war. Our navy played a big part stopping the japanese advance that may have ended up with australia under japanese occupation. Our canadians friends to the north, besides the great french influence in quebec which is anti american, never have been under the threat of occupation by another country. it makes a difference. The BBC is downplaying the victory as being based on economics - which not-so-coincidentally neither Blair nor Bush have in their favor. I wonder if the families and friends of the Bali casualties voted on the basis of economics, too. Consider the source. Posted by: The Black Republican on October 9, 2004 12:02 PM
10/9/04 "the war is less popular in Australia than here at home..." We have only the news media's assurance of this theirs and ours). Australians are a very independent and deliberate people. They only do what they want to do. If Mr. Howard won the election with greater support than he had before, the Australian people really wanted him as their leader. They didn't forget the war at the polls; it almost certainly brought them to the polls ready to vote for Mr. Howard. We are lucky and blest to have allies of the quality of the Australian people. God bless them. Lonnie Kendall Posted by: Lonnie Kendall on October 9, 2004 02:24 PM

Anzac troops were on the Western Front as well. Here's one Dough who was glad for it. Posted by: Donnah on October 9, 2004 10:24 PM
Yes! Lets hear it for the boys from down under! Even the Japanese love them, in these days. It would be so great if Americans Australia for close neighbors instead of Canadia. Just think of the surfing! Posted by: Joseph Reinhart on October 10, 2004 10:52 PM

In solidarity with the MSM, Rich Lowry and National Review vilified the Covington Kids as racist agitators back in 2019. Now, it’s Rich Lowry being canceled for an accidental slip of the tongue that sounded like a forbidden word. There’s a lesson here for the Polite Right, but they won’t learn it. [Buck]

The Lost Classics of Yacht Rock
You know you can't fool me I've been loving you too long It started so easy You want to carry on I'm not sure this is even Yacht Rock. This might just be very soft rock. I can't see myself sniffing cocaine from a Boat Hoe's cleavage to this song, which is the primary criterion of Yacht Rock. But I think this song more crosses from the shallows of soft rock to the cresting majesty of Yacht Rock. This is definitely bouncy enough for Hoe Snow. Very smooth, a little folky, a little jazzy. It's got that Hoe Snow snap.
From Andycanuck: Hezballah members reporting for work today, a little bit skittish about entering the code on an electronic keypad lock
I don't know if this is real. It's certainly accurate -- no one in Hezballah is happy to be handling any kind of electronic device today.
FAA fines SpaceX $633K for acting without its permission "These fines therefore are simply because FAA management has hurt feelings because SpaceX wouldn't wait for it to twiddle its thumbs for a few more weeks. The fines also suggest that FAA management is either being pressured to hinder SpaceX's commercial operations by higher ups in the White House, or that management itself is trying to exert more power over the company, for apparently very petty reasons." New book edited by Michael Walsh and featuring essays by Glenn Reynolds, Kurt Schlichter, and others: Against the Corporate Media: Forty-Two Ways the Press Hates You
Michael Walsh asked me to contribute a chapter to this book. I bailed out when I couldn't find a new angle on topic. But Walsh found a bunch of writers who do have new things to say. I'll review the book soon. Definitely consider buying it.
Supposedly a Twitter account called "The Black Insurrectionist" has a signed affidavit from an anonymous ABC "News" staffer, alleging that Muir and Kamala's sorority sister exchanged questions behind the scenes. I don't know if this is true. He says he's keeping the name of the staffer anonymous, so there will be no way to verify it even if he publishes it. Shrug. It's not much but a claim.
