Wrong War, Wrong Place, Wrong Time

A very highly regarded US general agrees completely with John Kerry's assessment.

Douglas MacArthur may have been of a piece with Kerry in another way, too.

Some think MacArthur's viewpoints reflected his ambition to be president. For instance, I've heard it said he resented Admiral Nimitz's activities and successes in the Pacific theatre because that was a "Navy show" (Navy + Marines) that would do nothing to get MacArthur - an Army general - to the White House.

If that's true, then MacArthur might have thought Patton a rival, and seethed whenever Patton held the spotlight.

I see no logical comparison with MacArthur's opinions about strategy in the two front world war and our 3 week victory in Iraq. MacArthur gave his opinion on an alternative use of force but still the use of it. There has been no recommendation for an alternative use of our force in Iraq. The only alternative recommended was that we not overthrow Saddam and continue to push for more inspections and let the status quo continue.

Opinions are like assholes. Everybody has one.

Any clear thinking person can see that Karl Rove put MacArthur up to this.

Oh, please. MacArthur had an ego only slightly smaller than the Pacific Ocean, which itself wasn't big enough for both he and Nimitz. And Nimitz thought up the island-hopping thing. MacArthur's philosophy, expressed in the bloody battles for Lae and Buna on New Guinea, was to take on the Japanese strong points head on. While he was slugging it out up the north coast of the island, for, like, two freaking years, Nimitz went from Hawaii to Guam, bypassing strong points like Truk and Rabaul. MacArthur couldn't stand not being the center of the universe and hated the fact that his former subordinate, Eisenhower, was more prominent.

Schmoll: 53% of New Jersey likely voters say their neighbors are voting for Ciattarelli, while 47% say the cheater/grifter Mikie Sherrill
The "who do you think your neighbors are voting for" question is designed to avoid the Shy Tory problem, wherein conservative people lie to schmollsters because they don't want to go on record with a likely left-winger telling them who they're really voting for. So instead the question is who do you think your neighbors are voting for, so people can talk about who they themselves support without actually having to admit it to a left-wing rando stranger recording their answers on the phone.

Interesting football history: How the forward pass was created in response to the nineteen -- 19! -- people killed playing football in 1905 alone
The original rules of football did not allow forward passes. The ball was primarily advanced by running, with blockers forming lines with interlocked arms and just smashing into the similarly-interlocked defensive lines. It was basically Greek hoplite spear formations but with a semi-spherical ball. As calls to ban the sport entirely grew, some looked for ways to de-emphasize mass charges as the primary means of advancing the ball, and some specifically championed allowing a passer to throw the ball forward.

Atari to release former competitor Intellivision with 45 games for $149
I always thought Intellivision was kinda lame (to the extent a cutting edge videogame box can be lame).
Intellivision insists upon itself.
Pitfall was a really good game. I don't know if it was available on Intellivision. Update: It was. But I don't know if it's included in the new unit.
