The Disappearing Middle Class

And the disappearing poor and working-poor classes, as well. Where are they all disappearing to? The New York Times wants to keep it a secret, but it seems they're "disappearing" into the middle-upper and upper classes.

When even the amateur liberal webzine Slate can so thoroughly -- and so easily -- debunk the NYT's "disappearing middle class" lie, maybe it's time the Times hired reporters who were less kneejerk leftist, or more intelligent, or preferably some mix of both.

Christopher Walken sends this open letter to the Times, in the form of a cowbell-heavy rap.

Yeah, so many people buy into this idea. It amazes me, because the evidence is overwhelmingly good news. I worte a little bit about it here.

There's something else here, something even more insidious that some people don't even think about. All these statistics refer to the "classes" as making more or making less over the course of these 35 years, yadda-yadda. But in 1967 (the first year measured in those stats), my father was somewhere in the middle of all those statistics. By 2003 he wasn't caring much for which fifth of the population he was in because he was dead.

Meanwhile, in 1967 I wasn't even born yet. Last time I checked my paycheck, I was safely inside that middle third (provided you count my company's hefty benefits that I never see as cash). Seems to me that going from zygote to captialist pig is a pretty big improvement. Oh, and I'm still alive, too.

New Times slogan: All the news that's not even fit to air on CBS - in print.

Wow, I'm reading some of the comments to that piece and these people are really foaming that someone has the nerve to say that Americans are doing well. They are PISSED.

Its pretty funny.

The Slate article links to a WaPo story, not the NYT.

That chart with accompanying explanation is hilarious.

Posted by: Nicholas Kronos on September 22, 2004 10:26 AM

You're right, David - sorry. But honestly, is there really a difference?

Posted by: The Black Republican on September 22, 2004 12:18 PM

I'd argue that it is a distinction with a difference. The WaPo is trying out for the currently vacant title of paper of record. I think they should be specifically called out on this. They are not as bad as the NYT yet, and it is hoped that real-time fiskings like this will keep (make?) them honest.

Tangentially, the NYT can't be called anything other than the "so-called paper of record" or "the-agency-formerly-known-as the paper of record". In an environmentally conscious effort to save pixels, I propose that it be called TAFKA paper of record.

I'm frankly surprised the title is 107 Days. I would have thought it would be:

Days Are Important: The Amount of Days Was a Number and That Number Was 100 Plus 7 Which is 107. 107. One Hundred and Seven. It's a Memoir and Memoirs are About Remembering Things Because Remembering Things is Good. Not Bad. Good. Memoir. A Memoir. Like a Reservoir But With Memory. We Have to Let it Flow. We Have to Let It Flow Into the Reservoir of Our Mind and Our Heart. Our Heart Which is the Beating Heart of Not Just Our Blood, But Our Progress. And Our People. And Democracy. The End.

Former CIA operative John Kiriakou talks with Matt Taibbi about the Brennan/Comey Coup
Both guys are old liberals, maybe even of the far-left variety, and both are appalled by the Democrat/Deep State coup against the US. Kiriakou says that CIA officers were legally obligated to report to the Inspector General John Brennan's repeated overruling of actual intelligence to encode his partisan conspiracy theories into US intel product, but of course they didn't.

Malcolm Jamal-Warner, the son on The Cosby Show, dies of drowning at age 54: reports
Warner was in Costa Rica on a family vacation and drowned while swimming near Cocles after allegedly being caught by a high current on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred between 2 and 2:30 p.m. local time.
Costa Rican National Police told The Post that Warner was pulled from the water by people in the area and taken to shore, where the Costa Rica Red Cross tried to revive him but were unsuccessful in their efforts.
His body was taken to the morgue at San Joaquin de Flores for an autopsy. The cause of death is listed as asphyxiation by "submersion."
