Chirac "Demands" Release of Kidnapped Frenchmen

He's threatened to call for multinational discussions if his ultimatum is not honored.

But seriously, he promises to do "everything" to win their release:

"Backed up by this national unity, I solemnly call for the release of Christian Chesnot and Georges Malbrunot. Everything is being done and everything will be done in the coming hours and days to achieve this."

It's probably not a very good or human thing to examine the political fallout from the kidnapping (and possible future murders) of two innocent Frenchmen.

But if Jacques Chirac actually appeases the terrorists in order to win the release of the hostages, well: John Forbes Kerry's already naive and childish talk of "our important allies" will become that much more absurd.

This could be an unwelcome September Surprise for our Highborn Hamlet.

Hopefully they'll pass a resolution condemning this act. That should strike fear into the kidnappers hearts. And if that fails, they'll pass yet another resolution to enforce the previous resolution, to show how resolute they are in this matter.

I question the timing of the fact that two of our largest Iraq invasion opponents have been terrorized in the past week.

Those Islamist extremists who supposedly do not represent Islam sure show a lot of solidarity with moderate Muslims. I wonder if it works the other way, too.

Posted by: Moonbat_One on August 29, 2004 07:20 PM

Maybe the U.N. will join hands will Chirac and they use their most trusted "sanctions" weapon.

Posted by: Gary B. on August 29, 2004 09:44 PM

What sort of appeasement could Chirac offer the terrorists that he hasn't already given?

Well, I was referring to repealing the head-scarf ban.

Gosh, instead of months of debate in the Security Council, could we have simply made like the Corleones and sent France a daily body part in the mail?

It would certainly signal a new era in Franco-American diplomacy.

Andrew Sullivan is back from vacation, and his journey to the darkside is complete.

"The low point was obviously the Swift Boat vets, jumping like bait on the end of Karl Rove's line. For a president who never served in Vietnam to get his cronies to lambaste an opponent who actually put his life in danger was, well, breathtakingly bold."

Posted by: Mark on August 30, 2004 10:09 AM

Not to mention absurd, if true, which I doubt.

Posted by: The Moose on August 30, 2004 11:48 AM

Sullivan begs for money for "rising Internet costs", takes a vacation on said money, and completes his long-sought task of losing his godd*mn mind. Nice.

re: Andrew Sullivan (since someone else already brung it up):

I know that in the heart of any tinfoil wearing asshole there lurks a desire to make this all Bush's or Rove's fault. Nobody seems to want to apportion any blame to John "Send Me!" Kerry, and those same people appear to have not read, or not believed John O'Neill's op-ed in Friday's WSJ.

He is not Rove's stooge, and he has a serious hard-on for Kerry, one that Bush can't do anything about. Why's that so hard for Andrew and his ilk to understand?

Posted by: Patton on August 30, 2004 12:33 PM

If the French do cave in to the demands, will the press conference be held in Vichy?

Posted by: Brian B on August 30, 2004 12:43 PM

He's more gaseous and vapid than usual.

Posted by: ace on August 30, 2004 12:53 PM

Come on Ace, please treat us to a "Welcome back Andrew" lambaste on the blog front page.

David Brock Redux deserves a fitting send-off to go toss the salads of the party of Al Gore and Al Sharpton.

Now that Andrew has entered moonbat territory, can he remain a viable revenue-generating blogger? An angry gay man parroting DU posts isn't going to get him very many contributions. I wouldn't be shocked in a few days if Andrew does a 180, and says he was fooled by the MSM during his internet downtime.

All's I'm going to say is I begged you for an Andrew-basting post almost a week ago, Mr. Ace. I was way ahead of the zeitgeist here!
