FBI Exectues Search Warrants in Connection With Anthrax MailingsI have little to add to this story, but it's so important I have to link it anyway. These searches may turn up exactly nothing at all. But it is worth noting that apparently the Feds had sufficient evidence to obtain a search warrant in this once-dead investigation. A lot of evidence? No; not necessarily anything more than a scrap. Even a liberal judge is going to be pretty forgiving when it comes to issuing a warrant in connection with this crime. But they have some evidence, some tip-off, something to make them want to search in these specific locations. And speaking of which: the locations are in Wellsville, NY and Newark, NJ and not Virginia or Maryland, or anywhere near Steven Hatfield's former residence. Is it possible these warrants were issued on the basis of "dated intelligence"? We'll just have to wait and see. We'll also have to wait and see if the searches are taking place in Muslim neighborhoods. That would, of course, signal a change in theory from "lone white terrorist with some job-related grudge" to "foreign terrorists," and that's especially interesting, because there are only a couple of foreign countries from which Muslim terrorists could have procured anthrax of such high technical production, and Iraq is both of them. Update! A few more details here. The locations are "houses" in Wellsville, NY, which on the Canadian border. (Uh-oh.) It's also near Buffalo. Uh-oh. This article doesn't mention Newark, but does mention Lavallette in NJ, which is a dinky little shore town. It says the arrests are unrelated to the Albany sting... which doesn't mean much at all. posted by Ace at 02:48 PM
CommentsIs it just me, or have we been absolutely deluged with stories about major victories in the War on Terror the past couple of days? Posted by: Aaron on August 5, 2004 03:29 PM
Aaron, The most important point the major anti-terror vistories is, did you realize John Kerry served in Vietnam? Posted by: Eric A. on August 5, 2004 03:56 PM

I have little to add to this story, but it's so important I have to link it anyway. That's supposed to read: "I have little to add to this story at this point, but--trust me--I'll soon be posting a major update. M-a-j-o-r." Posted by: Nicholas Kronos on August 5, 2004 04:07 PM

The Short Unhappy Life of a Russian Soldier: Why recruits die in 20-30 minutes
Interesting video. Some key parts: drones were responsible for 70-80% of all battlefield deaths in mid-2025, and I bet it's higher now. The Russian army is incredibly corrupt. Men get assigned to the most dangerous frontline units, the "Storm" units, unless they pay a superior $2,000 to be assigned to a different unit. Furthermore, there is often no real training for recruits -- commanders pocket the money that would have gone towards fuel and ammo costs incurred during training. Much "training" consists just of taking a single picture of soldiers doing something soldier-y, like fording a river, and publishing that as proof that the training was done. Even when it is done, training is only two weeks long.

Update to the video of a Russian soldier being spun around and thrown by the machinegun he was operating: The soldier was testing an old, archaic Russian machinegun intended to be mounted to a helicopter. The old gun was pressed into service as a possible anti-drone gun. The Russian army is generally depleted and being forced to bring a lot of old, unreliable weapons and platforms to the front.

FDA is providing an update regarding the sample of lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico which was reported positive on July 18, 2026. Due to the complexity in detection of Cyclospora, FDA laboratory experts re-reviewed the sample results and have concluded that the finding does not represent true amplification and should be considered a false positive. Information about the sample has been removed from the July 18, 2026, update below. FDA has notified Taylor Farms and continues working with the firm to ensure product implicated in this outbreak has been removed from the market. CNBC ranks Tennessee as dead last in its “Worst States to Live” analysis. The specific reason is that cross-dressing men in TN are denied access to children and women’s private spaces. Texas finished 49th. The “worst” states were all red states. [Buck]
