BREAKING NEWS: Bush Cancels Republican National ConventionWill Give Conventional Hall and TV Time to Kerry Campaign, Gratis; Republican Strategist Matthew Dowd Says, "Prominent Kerry Speeches are our best possible advertisement" ABCNews/WashPost: "Tepid Bounce" plus insignificant lead with likely voters. Update: More see Kerry as liberal after convo, too. Now up to 46% from 43%. posted by Ace at 07:19 PM
CommentsOkay, no bounce from the convention, maybe even a slight decline. Check. Now at what point do we get the meme, "Bush's pre-convention momentum does appear to have been slowed if not stopped altogether and in an electorate as closely divided as this one that's really quite a coup. Back to you Dan, Wolf, Peter, Tom, Chris." Posted by: Kerry Is Unelectable on August 2, 2004 07:41 PM
Gad, Thukes! What have the Democrats come to if their best hope of victory is for their candidate to NOT BE SEEN OR HEARD? Perhaps a trip to the wilderness will cause them to re-evaluate. Da_Wiz Sends Posted by: Outlaw_Wizard on August 2, 2004 07:44 PM
This is why every Republican campaign advertisement should consist exclusively of footage of John Kerry. Posted by: Aaron on August 2, 2004 08:00 PM
I couldn't believe my ears, but the CNN HN story about the Kerry bonk, er.. bounce.. actually used the "M word", McGovern. For democrats that is about as scary as being mentioned in the same sentence with Carter. Posted by: David on August 2, 2004 08:06 PM
This is freaking hilarious! Posted by: kdeweb on August 2, 2004 08:26 PM
Jesus Christ, not only does the ABC story mention the apparently Constitutionally enshrined duty of the POTUS to be in charge of health care reform, it lists it in the table twice. Here's two ways to handle it: 1) Keep your hands out of it. Posted by: Joe R. on August 2, 2004 08:55 PM
I question the timing of this announcement. Posted by: Beck on August 3, 2004 02:59 AM
The Bush campaign shouldn't get overly excited with this news just yet. The fact that the Kerry campaign is being compared to McGovern's still means that Kerry is in an excellent position to win either Massachusetts or Minnesota. Posted by: WindyCity on August 3, 2004 10:04 AM
Bush should pull an 'Iraqi Sovereignty' again and hold the Republican Convention two days earlier than originally scheduled, as a surprise. Posted by: lauraw on August 4, 2004 09:47 AM

The Short Unhappy Life of a Russian Soldier: Why recruits die in 20-30 minutes
Interesting video. Some key parts: drones were responsible for 70-80% of all battlefield deaths in mid-2025, and I bet it's higher now. The Russian army is incredibly corrupt. Men get assigned to the most dangerous frontline units, the "Storm" units, unless they pay a superior $2,000 to be assigned to a different unit. Furthermore, there is often no real training for recruits -- commanders pocket the money that would have gone towards fuel and ammo costs incurred during training. Much "training" consists just of taking a single picture of soldiers doing something soldier-y, like fording a river, and publishing that as proof that the training was done. Even when it is done, training is only two weeks long.

Update to the video of a Russian soldier being spun around and thrown by the machinegun he was operating: The soldier was testing an old, archaic Russian machinegun intended to be mounted to a helicopter. The old gun was pressed into service as a possible anti-drone gun. The Russian army is generally depleted and being forced to bring a lot of old, unreliable weapons and platforms to the front.
