The Mystery of Andrew Sullivan's High-Priced Server SpaceWunderkinder wants to know why Sullivan's pitching his latest drive for donations as required due to the fact that "bandwidth costs have risen." Wunderkinder estimates that Sullivan's bandwidth costs $500 a year, at the very most, assuming 30x his actual traffic. On the other hand, his most recent pledge drive raised over $120,000. Thanks to Michelle Malkin. In related news: Please send me money to cover the rising costs of my cutting-edge, top-of-the-line commenting interface. I need thirty three million dollars. Thank you. posted by Ace at 02:12 PM

Ace, Since John Kerry will be lowering my taxes next year, I pledge 22 million! Posted by: Joel (No Pundit Intended) on July 26, 2004 02:20 PM
Ace, Funny, this. I too, saw the plea for more money, set next to his slow and reluctant essay as to what John Forbes Kerry needs to say to win over the undecided (conservative) voters. No thanks, I think I'll pass on this pledge drive. Better yet, I will hit the PayPal button for Ace. (NB: I am strangely uncomfortable that when it is all said and done, Ace may have been correct about the "shill" thing. Damn you, Ace!) Posted by: MeTooThen on July 26, 2004 02:28 PM
Maybe it's for his headband-width? Because that item definitely needs more room for Sully's inflated sense of himself. Posted by: Joan of Argghh! on July 26, 2004 03:49 PM

Why shouldn't Sullivan (and Ace, for that matter) make money off of his blog? He should stop pretending he needs money for expenses and inform people to pony up during pledge week. Posted by: Cal on July 26, 2004 04:04 PM
Cal, Of course. It's not the request for donations I object to. Since I'm sitting here begging for cash myself, I obviously forgive that. For a long, long time -- since the beginning -- Sullivan has been claiming that the donations go into "redesigning his site" or "paying for bandwidth" or the like. Look, the money is going into his pocket. That's not such a terrible thing, since he is providing some sort of service. And of course it's voluntary. The money is going to pay his rent, or into his bank account, or for trips to P-town, or whatever. I don't see the need to lie about this. By the way, I really am going to kil Johnny Coldcuts unless someone buys me a fuckin' motorcycle. Posted by: ace on July 26, 2004 04:10 PM
Dammit, Ace, I was pissin' and moanin' about this "gimme money" shit last week and I'm STILL waiting for someone to cough up a new string bass for yours truly. If someone actually PayPals your account to keep you from chowin' down on fucking foul-mouthed Johnny Coldcuts I'm gonna be ROYALLY pissed. And then I'll ask for the contributor's name so I can get a slice of the pie. We're all family, right? Posted by: ccwbass on July 26, 2004 04:29 PM

CCWBass, I keep telling Ace to go into affiliate marketing. You should do the same. It's so much more....Republican than pledge drives. Posted by: Cal on July 26, 2004 06:15 PM
Marketing, eh? Hmmmmmm. I've got it! I'll go into the black market t-shirt biz! I can do a "rasta" Johnny Coldcuts ("Me got a natty dread, asshole!", an Allah t-shirt rip-off (Hey, Comrade! Fuck you, motherfucker!), and, for the Fark.com crowd, something disgusting involving Johnny Coldcuts and a nekkid lady. Even after I give Ace his skim off the top, I'll still make . . . uh . . . a particular sum of money! I'm on it! Posted by: ccwbass on July 26, 2004 06:40 PM
Next he's going to say that God os going to take his life if he doesn't raise enough money. To quote the ketchup lady, "He can just Stuff It." Posted by: Dacotti on July 26, 2004 07:02 PM

Update to the video of a Russian soldier being spun around and thrown by the machinegun he was operating: The soldier was testing an old, archaic Russian machinegun intended to be mounted to a helicopter.
