Plame's Identity Was Outed Long Before Novak

Although the indefatiguable Josh Marshall attempts to spin, spin, spin the facts as some sort of Republican nefariousness or fear about prosecution, he can't quite spin away the basic fact that Valerie Plame's identity as a "covert" (ahem) CIA paper-pusher mayb have been disclosed as far back as 1990, by Aldrich Aames.

The media seems to have been embargoing this fact. Marshall talks about it as if it's common knowledge, but oddly enough, no one in the liberal media ever before alerted me to this fact. (Marshall apparently mentioned this once, a year ago.)

Funny that a fact with such a seemingly dispositive impact on the investigation would be so woefully underreported by our strictly-neutral, right-down-the-middle media.

This information would seem to clear up a question we've all had for a long time: If this woman was "covert," why the hell was she based apparently exclusively in Chevy Chase, Maryland? (Or wherever she was based.) It turns out she was on the list of agents the CIA believed had been compromised, and thus kept from any missions requiring actual covertness.

Marshall seems genuinely beside himself that Republican evildoers might get off on a "technicality." Well, Josh, requiring that Plame actually be undercover -- not nominally undercover, but actually & factually undercover -- is not a mere "technicality." It is an element of the crime of which you wish to convict her "outer." If she wasn't actually undercover, there is no crime.

I find Marshall's close telling: "There does seem to be a rush of articles aimed not simply at discrediting Wilson but specifically at arguing that there is no legal basis for a prosecution of the folks who leaked Plame's name. Who's so concerned?"

Perhaps the answer to that question is anyone who believes that people should be punished only for crimes actually committed, Josh?

The story cited here is the Washington Times, so, yes, Marshall can argue it's a Republican mouthpiece. But which other articles does he include in his "rush"?

He implies that stories--not columns and editorials--are orchestrated affairs. This dovetails with the liberal/Democratic talking points (heh) re Berger.

My reaction to that is if most news stories are orchestrated, then shouldn't the Republicans be trying to orchestrate news coverage in their favor? And has it now become de facto that Republicans should not only ignore the direct Democratic manipulation of the news cycle in their favor by ceding the rhetorical ground to the Demos--they can call us liars and warmongers but we can't question their candidates' voting records without engaging in vicious smears and attacks--we are also to cede actual events to them?

That is, events that are detrimental to the Democrats will not be reported or discussed, but instead stories describing how Republicans are using and manipulating those events will be the basis for all discussion.

Say, did Joshua Micah Gambolputtydavonausfehrnspledendeknkendankendonkeneisenbahnwagengutenabendbitteeinnuernburgerbratwurst von Marshall ever deliver on that huge story he was promising us a couple of weeks ago?

There are a lot of covert officers that live in the US. Being covert doesn't necessarily require you live overseas.

Who cares about the substantive issues here....

Shouldn't we be more worried/concerned/apopletic about the "timing" of this information. Isn't that the new way to deal with the news?

What does this have to do with Abu Ghraib?...

Ah, yes. Chevy Chase, Maryland, nexus of international intrigue. The lovely but treacherous Casablanca of the mysterious East Coast. The oldest and most devious of spies whisper among themselves that if they know your name in Chevy Chase, you'd be better off never being born.

Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:

I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"
