Is This the "Syrian Band" From That Flight?PowerLine thinks he's found the miscreants. I have to say that based on the picture, they don't look especially threatening. Then again, an accoustic guitar could make Mike Tyson look like a pussy. And, in fairness, I wasn't sitting in an airplane with these guys as they took eight billion trips to the bathroom, either. That could make them look a little more menacing. posted by Ace at 02:52 PM
CommentsWhy does everyone do this? Donald Sensing got it wrong, and Taranto got from him, I think. Powerline says this: Responding to my call for additional information, one of our our enterprising readers has located a photo of such a group -- the group known as Kulna Sawa. They don't say that Kulna Sawa is the band that was on the plane. Noone has identified them yet. They say that Kulna Sawa is such a group as the band as described: i.e., a large number of Syrian musicians in one group. Posted by: blaster on July 19, 2004 08:34 PM

THAT IS NOT THE BAND FROM THE FLIGHT! I know those guys, and most are still in Syria - they've never been here. Stupid! Posted by: Erika on July 20, 2004 12:10 PM
"Then again, an accoustic guitar could make Mike Tyson look like a pussy." I beg to differ. Didn't you see the picture of Jon Bon Jovi at that Kerry rally? Posted by: Aaron on July 20, 2004 12:49 PM
Erika, Read Blaster's comment 6 inches above yours. Stupid! Posted by: Smack on July 20, 2004 01:25 PM
OH! Erika's (aka Erika Linden Green) doing a tour of the rightish blogosphere and speaking up for her friends in Kulna Sawa. Which is great. But her tone isn't doing her friends any favors. And she was equally rude to the Powerline Guys. Check out these huffy exchanges on their site: http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/007217.php and before that: http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/007201.php I think she should report Ace to the Anti-discrimination league too, as she's doing with the Powerliners. He's pretty insensitive sometimes. BTW, there's a NYT piece on this matter today--and still no one knows who the band is. Posted by: See-Dubya on July 20, 2004 06:09 PM
Has anyone heard about the surveilance photos from the airport that should be in sufficiant supply? I'm sure the FBI collected their own as well. Posted by: Blogbat on July 20, 2004 07:28 PM
Powerline heard from the band's manager, and...wasn't them. So that narrows down the number of possible touring Syrian ensembles by one. those guys looked nice, anyway. I'd hate to get Vinny Falcone after them. Blogbat: I'm sure airport surveillance stills aren't usually made available to the public. Posted by: See Dubya on July 20, 2004 07:37 PM
Hey Assad, If Mohammed and I, Mr. Asul Fucking Anka, were the only two on stage, who would be the only fucking jihadi that mattered? By the way, the guys get shirts and the gals get burkas. Posted by: Senator PhilABuster on July 20, 2004 09:12 PM
What does a Syrian band terrorist look like anyways. Is there something different in the way he/she combs their hair? Is it in the smile, the twinkle of the eyes? Their posture, or is it in the way they gesture? Were they Born that way or was it culturally aquired. Posted by: nick on July 21, 2004 12:09 PM
The band has been found, it seems-- And he's right-- booking Carrottop should be considered a crime against humanity. Posted by: Raoul Ortega on July 21, 2004 07:47 PM
Terror in the sky. again!! It is really strange and disappointing to all 12 members of Kulna Sawa band, to be accused of learning music to hijack an American flight in the USA. Yesterday we were shocked by the abundant number of calls and emails we received from the press asking us to comment and respond to an accusation of an attempt to hijack Northwest flight number 327 heading to California from Detroit, while we are still in Syria!. Without getting into details of the story that was reported by an American journalist and made America agitated, which could be easily obtained in details from the internet; we the members of Kulna Sawa band respond to all of these as follows: for more than 10 years, Kulna Sawa (Together in English) band put all its efforts to sing for Peace, Love, Tolerance, and above all human-well being. Kulna Sawa were overwhelmed by the invitation of RASIT (a non-governmental organization affiliated with the United Nations/DPI), to tour the United States through its program Culture for Peace, which will begin on November 1st of this year. The tour includes 22 concerts in churches and American cultural organizations, in addition to the main UN establishments These concerts are dedicated to provide the American audience with a better and more accurate understanding of the religious and cultural dialogue between our two worlds. following to the announcement of our tour in the US, we believe that our band's name was intentionally brought up by some people who are trying to involve us in a matter concerning terrorism, and to raise question marks that will be associated with each member of the band for the rest of their lives. From fear of exposure to the true ideas and concepts of the Syrian mind, they are trying to create obstacles that will hinder our band's movement that is simply trying to draw the real image of Syria, and to reveal it to the American society. Even that we wasn’t on board, we were harmed by this incident and became direct victims of the illusions of this writer who reacted by writing racist accusations that someone use it in order to harm us and ruin our image even before the beginning of our tour. We, as a Syrian band composed of individuals from different religions, are greatly shocked and disappointed when we realize that this is the reward we get for all our struggle and efforts to go to the other side of the world in order to begin the dialogue of culture in the name of peace.

Update to the video of a Russian soldier being spun around and thrown by the machinegun he was operating: The soldier was testing an old, archaic Russian machinegun intended to be mounted to a helicopter. The old gun was pressed into service as a possible anti-drone gun. The Russian army is generally depleted and being forced to bring a lot of old, unreliable weapons and platforms to the front.
