Andrew Sullivan Silent on SignorileIt's absolutely incredible to me that Andrew Sullivan-- who is forever having minor conniptions over the outing of personal sexual information -- has nothing to say about Signorile's outing of Mikulski. Of course, this outing is in aid of Sullivan's top objective-- gay marriage. Is it possible he's decided that perhaps sexual privacy can give a little in the interests of gays getting hitched? Seems like an awful lot of Sullivan's former passions are yielding to the interests of promoting gay marriage. Some might say, But maybe he hasn't read the piece yet. It seems flat-out impossible to me that Sullivan doesn't know about this article. If I know about, he knows about. He's got 100x the email traffic; someone sent him this story. And look-- he's a homosexual. A gay blade of grass does not bend beneath a straight foot without the gay grapevine whispering into Sullivan's ear. I almost posted something saying "Sullivan had better condemn this, if he doesn't want to be exposed, yet again, as a Machivellian hypocrite." But I didn't, because frankly, I expected him to condemn Signorile's outing. I didn't even think that Sullivan could at this point simply "forget" his previous positions on sexual privacy. So it seemed like a gratuitious admonotion. Seemed, I says. Contra me: Right Side of the Rainbow disagrees that sexual orientation is or should be private information. He argues that some things about a politician should be known by the voters, as such information is indicative as to their likely stances and biases. I'm unconvinced. Without doubt, sexual orientation has some usefulness as a position proxy. But so do a lot of things. Whether or not a man engages in sodomy with his wife might be indicative of his positions on sodomy and sexual permissiveness generally. But I think the connection is so attenuated that the privacy interest greatly outweigh's the public's purported right to know. posted by Ace at 02:20 PM
CommentsSurprise, surprise. AS says nothing about the foibles of the pro-gay marriage folks while basking in the "hypocrisy" of even liberal gays who might simply oppose this one issue. Gay activism is simply Narcissism magnified to the level of political philosophy. The personal is political to the 1000-th degree. Posted by: hobgoblin on July 8, 2004 07:16 PM
Ace, you're right that it doesn't look good for Sully on the point. But as the Designated Devil's Advocate, I'm obligated :-) to advance the possibility that Sullivan has recused himself from the controversy because he's widely known to have personal reasons to hate Signorile's guts and thus he thinks he won't be heard as a neutral commentator. (I'm basing this possibility on the remarks between you and Allahpundit regarding Signorile's supposed role in the "barebacking" imbroglio, with which I have little familiarity.) It's also possible that Sullivan thinks any damage to Mikulski is already done, that any admonition from him will fall on deaf ears, and thus that anything he says will only serve to advance Signorile's notoriety. And it's possible on the other hand that Sullivan does think Mikulski could suffer electoral damage or personal grief if he helps spread the story even by means of critical commentary. And then there's just the fact that in polemical writing, as we both know, the most corrosive vitriol often requires the most careful and, therefore, the longest preparation. Sullivan doesn't only blog; he also writes articles and books, so he's accustomed to long labors. Maybe in Sullivan's mind, Signorile needs more than an offhand comment. Sullivan may, right now, be preparing a response that will require chemists to extend the pH scale. And yet it's possible, as you suggest, that Sullivan's just giving Signorile a pass because this time Signorile's nastiness is congruent with Sullivan's aims. I can't rule that out. Aside to Hobgoblin: Match the following to your paragraphs #1, 2, and 3: (a) oversimplifying platitude, (b) insulting overgeneralization, (c) overwrought me-tooism. The answers are below.

Update to the video of a Russian soldier being spun around and thrown by the machinegun he was operating: The soldier was testing an old, archaic Russian machinegun intended to be mounted to a helicopter. The old gun was pressed into service as a possible anti-drone gun. The Russian army is generally depleted and being forced to bring a lot of old, unreliable weapons and platforms to the front.
