Shock: A Liberal-Leaning Independent Congratulates Himself for Having the Courage to Not Be a Republican

The Great Allah tipped me to this utterly-surprising story.

Believe it or not, somewhere in the country a political independent with liberal leanings has finally said what we've all been thinking.

He's finally gotten around to congratulating himself as being wise, intelligent, and brave for not being a member of the Republican Party.

It's about time that some liberal-leaning independent somewhere had the balls to acknowledge his own intellectual and moral superiority.

It's bothered me for some time: Why aren't all of these "independents" more willing to praise themselves for their courageous non-conformism and intrepid independence?

Sure, every four years Frank Luntz holds focus-group panels where independents, largely liberal-leaning, do little else but pat each other on the back for having the tough-minded moral courage of being indecisive and vacillating.

And of course you can hardly go five or six seconds reading a liberal-leaning independent before he proudly announces he can't choose between the two major political parties, and then patiently explains why that makes him a better citizen than you could ever be.

But is this really enough? Seriously-- do we really have to wait those painful five or six seconds in between liberal-leaning independents' self-acknowlegment of superiority?

Bear in mind, when a liberal-leaning independent fails to inform me every three seconds that he's a better citizen, American, and dancer than I am, I start to forget how superior he is to me in every conceivable way.

After all, I'm someone who is a fairly-contented member of a party which roughly promotes my own political views. A moron, in other words.

My short-term memory-- not so good.

Why, oh why, do these liberal-leaning independents have to be so damnably stinting in their own self-praise?

So, Mr. Michael J. Totten has finally announced that he's a better person than me, and a better person than any of you. Sadly, this will be his only acknowledgment of this simple truth for some time. Until, like, tomorrow, at around 9:45 am.

This one declaration of the day may be enough for you.

It's not enough for me. Not by a long shot, buddy.

I don't think I like the tone of this piece. But then, I haven't really decided yet. I mean, it's funny, sure. But it's also mean-spirited.

In a perfect world, I'd like my laughter to be pure and without any kind of personalized referential tether. Like a good knock knock joke. "Orange who?" "Orange you glad I didn't say banana?" Hahahaha. Like that.

I subscribe to both Nation and The Weekly Standard, incidentally.

"Political parties are cruel to people who think," he says.

He must be right. I can't decide on which punchline goes best with this quote. I'm sure it'll all be made clear when I become an independent.

That bit by Totten was pretty piss poor.

Has there ever been one of these "moderate independents" who hasn't come down on the side of the Dems, and didn't make a big deal about it in the process? You'd think a real "independent" would be more like 50-50.

It's sort of like how Moynihan somehow got the reputation of being a independent thinker and maybe even a closet conservative despite his never casting a vote that didn't follow the party line on even the most minor of issues.

You're quite right, and "moderate" is pretty much just a euphemism for "liberal, but I don't want you do call me that."

The trouble is...

...you know this means the country actually is a lot more liberal than we think, or than polls show.

So I try not to dwell on the implications.

Posted by: ace on June 18, 2004 06:55 PM

Nah, I daresay a lot of people who say they're moderates truly are. Then there are people like this Totten ass clown, who (mis)use the word moderate to fool the more, shall we say, gullible among us.

EXACTLY !!!!
I was in suspense reading this as I had a name in mind that fit your analysis PERFECTLY. Nice to see it was the same name.

I think Totten just jumped the shark.

Recall, if you will, the Pew media poll that showed a 5:1 Liberal:Conservative with a large number of "moderates". However, when the questions focused on social questions it was clear the "moderates" were in fact quite left-leaning.

I'm frankly surprised the title is 107 Days. I would have thought it would be:

Days Are Important: The Amount of Days Was a Number and That Number Was 100 Plus 7 Which is 107. 107. One Hundred and Seven. It's a Memoir and Memoirs are About Remembering Things Because Remembering Things is Good. Not Bad. Good. Memoir. A Memoir. Like a Reservoir But With Memory. We Have to Let it Flow. We Have to Let It Flow Into the Reservoir of Our Mind and Our Heart. Our Heart Which is the Beating Heart of Not Just Our Blood, But Our Progress. And Our People. And Democracy. The End.

Both guys are old liberals, maybe even of the far-left variety, and both are appalled by the Democrat/Deep State coup against the US. Kiriakou says that CIA officers were legally obligated to report to the Inspector General John Brennan's repeated overruling of actual intelligence to encode his partisan conspiracy theories into US intel product, but of course they didn't.

Warner was in Costa Rica on a family vacation and drowned while swimming near Cocles after allegedly being caught by a high current on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred between 2 and 2:30 p.m. local time.
Costa Rican National Police told The Post that Warner was pulled from the water by people in the area and taken to shore, where the Costa Rica Red Cross tried to revive him but were unsuccessful in their efforts.
His body was taken to the morgue at San Joaquin de Flores for an autopsy. The cause of death is listed as asphyxiation by "submersion."
