Sabato: Kerry 274, Bush 264

...but it's even closer than that. Kerry's lead comes via slim leads in three small states Bush carried in 2000 (NH, WV, NV).

He's got a fun fact concerning the former Republic of Texas:

Under the terms of Texas’s admission to the Union as a state in 1845, the former independent Republic has the right to split into five separate states almost at will. That would be eight more electoral votes for Bush! Why haven’t the President’s supporters in the Lone Star State at least discussed the possibility?

That's the sort of thing Republicans never have the balls to do. Still, it's fun to think about.

Texas is also the only state in the union that, under terms of its admission to the US, retains the legal right to secede from the union.

Another one: Texas is the only state that can legally fly its state flag at the same height as the American flag.

That proviso was put in because at the time it was felt that having only two Senators might not be enough, and by splitting up the state, they could get more clout that way. Increased Senate representation is actually a good argument for splitting up several states-- Texas, Florida, California, New York.

Adding two more Senators is also why there are two Dakotas when even one is excessive. We have the Republicans of the 1880s to blame for the Daschle and the other three Dems from those states.
