GLAAD Maad Over Shalit's Brokeback Review

Can't Stop The Music, as the early 80's Village People movie was called:

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is demanding an apology from "Today" show film critic Gene Shalit for his review of "Brokeback Mountain."

During his Thursday review of the critically hailed film, Shalit called Jake Gyllenhaal's character, Jack, a "sexual predator" who "tracks Ennis down and coaxes him into sporadic trysts," E! Online reported Friday.

Kind of a bizarre take (especially as Jack was, ahem, on the receiving end of things). But, in all fairness to Mr. Shalit, Jack was seducing a mentally challenged man, the Gay Slingblade, rmmrm-hmmmrm, rhrmm-hrrmmh.

The A-Man again.

I've seen anti-defamation groups get peeved over the content of movies...but the content of a movie review??

How thin-skinned can you get?

Posted by: lauraw on January 7, 2006 10:43 AM

You're really not allowed to give this movie a bad review.

But to be fair to GLAAD, I understand why they're thin-skinned at the suggestion that a gay relationship is due to a "sexual predator" seducing someone. And it's a weird take-- it's just not in the movie at all. It's the other guy-- the Gay Slingblade -- who has all the power in the relationship. The Jack character (Jake Gyllenhall) is in love, the other guy is sorta just there for the sex.

Kind of. I guess there's more to it than that, but the whole movie is Jake begging Heath Ledger to be with him, and the other guy saying, "Nah, but I'll do you on Brokeback Mountain a couple of times a year."

So it was a predator-prey situation?

Or a two-week spark-off?

(somebody was bound to say that...)

Posted by: Lipstick on January 7, 2006 10:53 AM

I *WISH* it were a two-week spark-off. Then maybe the film would have wrapped up after 90 minutes instead of twelve and a half hours.

To know all this about the movie, don't you have to see it. Something I have no intention of doing.

If Shalit got the relationship completely wrong, then that should be the substance of the response to his critique.

Maybe he nodded off during the fifth hour and he had a bad dream about Deliverance and somehow conflated the two when he was writing his review.

Speaking of Deliverance, there's one for GLAAD to puzzle over; hate it, or don't touch it?

Posted by: lauraw on January 7, 2006 11:49 AM

"If Shalit got the relationship completely wrong, then that should be the substance of the response to his critique."

Agreed. But an apology? For a movie review? Just because some special interest group got their panties all in a wad?

What's next - all the Munich reviewers who pointed out that the terrorists were worse than the Israelis have to apologize to CAIR? I don't think so.

I just finished a post called "If Democrats wrote the reviews for Brokeback Mountain" if you need a smile. Just go to my blog.

Gene needs to tell GLAAD to just STFU and go away. They are just another thin skinned whine group.

Posted by: GTBurns on January 8, 2006 09:53 AM

Tell the jerks from GLAAD to get a life they should just go take a flying leap off the golden gate Bridge

Important Message from Recent Convert to Christianity and Yet Super-Serious Christian Tuq'r Qarlson: Actually Muslims love Jesus, it's Trump and his neocons who hate him
Tucker Carlson Network
@TCNetwork

The people in charge [Jews, of course -- ace] don't want you to know this, but Muslims love Jesus.

Islam reveres Him as a major prophet and messenger of the Lord, believes He performed miracles, and states that He will return to Earth to defeat the Antichrist. That's why Donald Trump's painting depicting himself as the Son of God offended the president of Iran. It was an attack on his religion as well as Christianity.

Trump's trolling tweet was ill-advised, but Tucker is just lying when he claims the Christianity-hating President of Iran was "offended" by this.
He's one step away from announcing his official conversion to Islam. He literally never stops praising Islam. Well, he suddenly became Christian two years ago, there's not much stopping him from converting again.
You can track Tuq'r's official conversion to Islam with this Bingo card.

Politico is reporting that multiple people have abruptly resigned from Eric Swalwell's gubernatorial campaign: "Members of senior leadership have departed the campaign, including Courtni Pugh, a strategic adviser who served as Swalwell's top liaison to organized labor groups."

So the campaign is collapsing due to the truth of the sexual harassment allegations.
That hissing sound you hear is the air going out of the Swalwell campaign. UPDATE: No it wasn't, it was just Swalwell one-cheek-sneaking out a fart on camera
