Bad News: Fewer American Soldiers Die

Nope, that's not really me talking, that's my interpretation of a Reuters article.

Improvements in emergency battlefield medicine are keeping soldiers alive who'd've died just a few years before.

Sounds like good news, albeit good news about an essentially grim subject, right?

Not to Reuters:

Number of badly wounded soldiers on rise in Iraq

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - Military medical advances are keeping more soldiers alive in the Iraq War but also creating a growing pool of badly wounded veterans who will need expensive, long-term medical care, the U.S. secretary of Veteran Affairs said on Friday.

It's true that this is a good news/bad news story. While many badly wounded men are being saved, they are, largely, going to suffer from serious medical problems for the rest of their lives.

So why not give it a good news/bad news headline, like:

Medical Improvements Save Many Soldiers, Resulting In Rise in Number of Badly Wounded Casualties of War

Nope. To Reuters, apparently, saving the life of a badly wounded soldier is unambiguously bad news.

Of course, were new weapons (like some frangible super-bullet) killing more soldiers outright, Reuters wouldn't have run a headline like New Ultra-lethal Iraqi Weaponry Saves American Taxpayers Cost of Long-Term Veterans' Medical Care.

But then again, who knows? This is Reuters after all. Maybe they would headline the article exactly that way.

Thanks to the A-Man.

That was just about stand-alone perfect.
Thanks.

Valiant Bearded Warrior Poets Gravely Wound Our Callow Youths . . .

Posted by: The Colossus on January 7, 2006 09:47 AM

I have also heard the tale that some squads of soldiers have taken to using tampons as an emergency field measure to plug bullet wounds.

I think I saw that in a letter from a soldier on Hugh Hewitt's page, but now I can't remember. I hope it's not an urban legend.

"Number of badly wounded soldiers on rise in Iraq"

Was it really that malicious a headline?

Posted by: scarshapedstar on January 7, 2006 12:14 PM

Yes, it was. The intent of the headline was to show just one more negative thing about the war in Iraq. Not to underscore advances in battlefield medicine or the fine work of our brave medics. It seems like Al Rueters would have preferred our soldiers to just go ahead and be dead instead of wounded - that would be better for Al Rueters AND the American Taxpayer.

Posted by: Madfish Willie on January 7, 2006 12:28 PM

yes, it was. the implication is very clear.

NYT ran a similar story about 8-9 months ago. same bent.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on January 7, 2006 12:28 PM

The article to which you refer is really about the "after" effects of being wounded, and that there will be an overwhelming nimber of soldiers who will have to deal with the physical trauma, hospital stays, and long-term treatment...and who's going o PAY for it.

I've read nothing, by ANY news organization that implies they are not happy that more soldiers are being kept alive.

Maybe you should visit one of the military hospitals and see what this war is doing to our young men and women before posting such a biased and inaccurate comment.

Perhaps you should read the post more closely before blathering incoherently. The objection was to the headline, not the content of the article. The mismatch between the headline and the content gave rise to Ace's satirical headline.

Posted by: geoff on January 7, 2006 02:29 PM

Thomas,
These injuries are extremity injuries (arms and legs) that are severe and mostly ones that require amputation(s).
This is a testament to the body armor that the troops wear. You know the same body armor that you decried as inadeqaute.
The really amazing thing about these soldiers is the number of them who want to and try to return to their combat units.

Here's the headline:

"Number of badly wounded soldiers on rise in Iraq"

Wherre in the aritcle does the author contradict this statement?

And...you DO understand that headlines are designed to garner attention.

You know...like: "Clinton Gave Iran Nuke Blueprints" (bullshit)

"Shed No Tears For Dead White Coal Miners" (huh??)

"Steven Colbert: Pro-Torture?" (huh??)

YOu people ONLY want to hear what you already believe to be so.

Wherre in the aritcle does the author contradict this statement?

Is that the point of the post? No, it isn't. When you comprehend the point of the post, perhaps you might be able to make cogent and relevant arguments. I'll wait.

Important Message from Recent Convert to Christianity and Yet Super-Serious Christian Tuq'r Qarlson: Actually Muslims love Jesus, it's Trump and his neocons who hate him
Tucker Carlson Network
@TCNetwork

The people in charge [Jews, of course -- ace] don't want you to know this, but Muslims love Jesus.

Islam reveres Him as a major prophet and messenger of the Lord, believes He performed miracles, and states that He will return to Earth to defeat the Antichrist. That's why Donald Trump's painting depicting himself as the Son of God offended the president of Iran. It was an attack on his religion as well as Christianity.

Trump's trolling tweet was ill-advised, but Tucker is just lying when he claims the Christianity-hating President of Iran was "offended" by this.
He's one step away from announcing his official conversion to Islam. He literally never stops praising Islam. Well, he suddenly became Christian two years ago, there's not much stopping him from converting again.
You can track Tuq'r's official conversion to Islam with this Bingo card.
