Pardon The Additional Ads...but $350 per month on BlogAds just wasn't working for me. I know, I know... if you're doing it for money you shouldn't be doing it at all. But I don't buy that. I'm a Republican. If I could figure out a way to get paid watching old episodes of Simon & Simon I'd do it. I'm going to be adding a second sidebar to the site shortly. I know that some asked me not to, but for most of you, you're viewing this on bigger resolutions, and the whole right side of the page is just blank anyway. The page will expand to fill up your browser-area. For the 10% of you on 800 x 600 resolutions, the site will still have 480 pixels-width of main text area, which is only a little smaller than the old set up (which used to be a little less than 600 pixels of main text area). Margins will be a little smaller to help keep the page from being too long for those on lower-resolutions. When I can figure out how to do it I'm going to ad top headlines in the sidebar too-- not my most recent posts, but the top headlines of the day. I don't link a lot of interesting stories because I don't have anything to say about them; but once I get the top headlines up and running, I'll pretty much be linking every interesting story I come across. So the site will, I hope, better serve as a first-read newsite. There'll be the normal blogging in the main area, and then a Drudge-linke run-down of other headlines on the side. The extra ads are annoying, I know, but I'll also be taking this blogging-thing a little more seriously with more money from it coming in. So, you know, there is that. posted by Ace at 01:31 AM

Actually, I am viewing the site right now at 800x600 but it would be ridiculous to expect anyone to make any sacrifice to accomodate this old Toshiba laptop. The thing is nearly ten years old and lives on a tea tray downstairs for web surfing while watching TV or if I get stuck in a game and need a solution from GameFAQs.com. Just a 333 MHz K6-II but it does the job. The slowest machine I still have in regular use, although its Win3.x predecessor in somewhere in the closet. If the site goes a bit wider I'll just have to endure the horrendous labor of adjusting the horizontal scroll bar. The horror... Posted by: epobirs on December 27, 2005 06:48 AM
You selfish bastard! Oh, wait, I'm conservative/libertarian so selfishness is ok. As you were. Posted by: too many steves on December 27, 2005 06:55 AM
I'll just go right on ignoring the extra ads like I ignore the current ones. Hey, I used to watch Simon and Simon. I can tune out anything. Posted by: Andrea Harris on December 27, 2005 07:10 AM
Ads I can live with. Ads that move and blink back and forth I can't abide. At some point, I suppose, I'll have to balance my tolerance of the Tony Blair-type of ad you've got running now and the enjoyment I receive from the Ace blog. Posted by: Buddha on December 27, 2005 07:20 AM

The only downside to less lateral display will be the loss of viewing the magnifience of Dick Cheney's throbbing and elongated cock in all its regal splendor! This decision will be a tremendous loss for one and all! Save Dick Cheney's cock view! Posted by: Grouper on December 27, 2005 07:40 AM

Hey. Duh, ya'all. Ace is actually saying, "Yo, readers, for the love of all things Holy, click my Blogads!" I think I'll do just that. I'll invite all you people to do the same so he can hit the ornament sales because the ribbon thing, while cute, can't go on forever. Posted by: Feisty on December 27, 2005 10:09 AM
Simon & Simon? You might have to charge extra for that... Just remember to draw the line at certain shows too awful to watch for any money, like Buck Rogers :P Posted by: Patti on December 27, 2005 10:14 AM
Oh, I don't know. The tree seemed nice enough. I showed the picture to my wife, and she thought it was cute that a bachelor like Ace took the time to put up and decorate a tree. Still, though. Give us a P.O. box address and we'll send along some ornaments fit for the AoSHQ Christmas tree. Posted by: Slublog on December 27, 2005 10:15 AM

I've got no problem with a second sidebar. And I don't even mind clicking on the ads, if it'll bring in a few pennies. No way, though, am I going to touch an ad that sits there flashing and blinking at me like a piece of f'in Japanese seizure-anime. Those people are in dire need of some consumer feedback. Posted by: utron on December 27, 2005 11:26 AM
Hey its your place, do what you want and don't apologize. If I could figure out a way to get paid for reading this stuff I would do it in a heartbeat. Just stay funny. Posted by: JackStraw on December 27, 2005 11:34 AM
I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop. Do these new ads happen to be gay ads? Posted by: Bart on December 27, 2005 11:41 AM
Do what you need to do, just don't give any moving monkeys to punch. I can (barely) tolerate those. What I absolutely could not stand were the "swat the mosquito" ads complete with annoying buzz sounds. A couple of ad-ridden sites I visit loaded up on those, and when I had a couple of pages open all the buzzing was intolerable. It's pretty ridiculous to have to turn off your speakers to look at a web site, not to mention being unable to listen to music, etc., from the computer. I finally dug into the HTML source, found the site that was serving those ads, and blocked it in my hosts file. So, please, whatever you do, NO ADS WITH SOUND. Thank you. Posted by: Bob on December 27, 2005 12:08 PM
Hey. Duh, ya'all. Ace is actually saying, "Yo, readers, for the love of all things Holy, click my Blogads!" You have to be very careful with this. Ironically, in the old days sites would beg you to click on their ads, and that was seen by all sides as a good thing. Now, after a lot of sites set up scripts or paid people to click on ads, it's more often seen as a scam. One site I looked had lost their advertising service (blogads or googleads I think) for a few days after what I thought was a pretty innocent "please check out our sponsors" request. (They appealed the decision and got the ads back.) I think the thinking right now is put the ads up and they while they hope people will click through them they do not want them encouraged, as they have no interest in people clicking on ads "to help the site" when those people have no intention of buying anything. One more thing, while we're on the issue: When I first heard about the direction this movie was taking, I was surprised that this could come from the person who made Schindler's List. I have heard many other people express the same sentiment when reviewing and commenting on Munich. But when you think about it, Schindler's List had some of the same elements. Yes, it was a movie about the Holocaust, but its central character was a German working to save Jews. In that case, Spielberg's ridiculous need to show an "evenhanded" approach to everything, no matter how vile, was masked by the fact that Schindler was a real person who really did those things (though he was shined up a little for the movie). I suspect if there had been no actual Schindler then Spielberg would have felt it necessary to invent one. Posted by: Bob on December 27, 2005 12:58 PM
Er...ignore that last post. I thought I was in the comment page for Munich. Posted by: Bob on December 27, 2005 01:00 PM

So you want to be a successful blogger? The first thing I do is go to Drudge for breaking news. The rest of the sites I visit periodically: Townhall, OpinionJournal, BlameBush, Lileks, and Ann Coulter. If AoS could provide all that: News, analysis, commentary, humor, and a liberal ass-whoopin', it'll be the best blog ever. In the words of your surrogate father and hero, Capt. Drudge is not top of the list for any reason other than being like the National Enquirer. Drudge happened to get shitcanned from enough mainstream jobs to have enough resources to know when papers are sitting on stories. Drudge got big BECAUSE of monika lewinsky, he wasn't an outsider, who did hard work, he was a guy who was willing to betray the sources (his contacts in the mainstream meadia companies he got fired from, as I understand) Drudge ain't no superhero, he's a Wannabe MStreamer, shitting on cats like Ace, and AJ, and Michelle because Drudge thinks he's a "straight" reporter, he won't admit that there is no such thing. F drudge. He's only good for Headlines, not for stories. Posted by: Wickedpinto on December 28, 2005 12:20 AM

If AoS could provide all that: News, analysis, commentary, humor, and a liberal ass-whoopin', it'll be the best blog ever I don't see Bart listing his blog. I don't either, I don't have one, I'm too lazy. But let me tell you what makes your blog Awesome Ace. . . You aren't a pulpiteer, You arn't a complete partisan, you aren't a "serious" commentator. That makes you popular, you engage in all of the things above, without being ANY of those things above. I don't know if you keep track, but in the last. . .month or so, I've been commenting like a fanatic, which, in some ways I amn. THIS is what makes a great blog. If you come to blogs looking for straight news? you are pathetic. If you think that Insta is the BEST blog, then you are wrong. Insta, ain't the blogger he was, he's a good REFERENCE source, but in general his original content is non-specific, and non-participatory. A year or so ago, insta was AMAZING, he was not only active, but also willing to offer commentary. Gateway is prolly the best News Blog, cuz of all of the quotes, but if you take a ratio, Gateway only has 2 posts a day, 9/10ths of which are quotes. Ace here? I LOVE ACE! He won't make a BS link just for attention, or for recycling stories all to often, unless he himself has an opinion. Ace, is my most FREQUENT Blog. Second is AJ. Don't know how well I wrote this, but this is the site that informs and entertains, and Ace has more original content than any One Man Blog, and when Ace isn't sure? he's happy to admit it. Closest competition to Ace, is Cold Fury(in my as yet moderate experience.) Posted by: Wickedpinto on December 28, 2005 12:29 AM

Funniest thing I've read about the Virginia mess. Back when they were hustling the referendum through the assembly both Senators, Warner and Kaine, advised them to go slow and play by the rules. Louise Lucas said she respected them but didn't need advice from the "cuck chair" in the corner. The gerrymandering was overturned and Louise is heading for the big house. Edward G. Robinson voice "where's your cuck now?" I posted his post on twitter and it's gotten 25K views so far. Thanks, Smell the Glove Chris

"It's f**king f**ked."
-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source" Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held. Basil the Great
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.
Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing. Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult. Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending. (((Dan Hodges))) Nick Lowles
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98. Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years. Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45 Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%. I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens. REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs. Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:

I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while.
