Tuesday Morning Bridge

This happy little span exists in West London, and is known, appropriately, as the Rolling Bridge:
rollingbridge.jpg
That’s right, the bridge rolls up. Now what you got to say to that, sucka?

Yeah, that’s what I thought. (A little info here. )

It’s certainly novel. I do wonder, though, about the smoothness of its rolling action – whether it’s a nice, fluid contraction or if it’s all herky fits and bobbing pauses. As I’m a shallow man, this will greatly influence my opinion of it.

(h/t We Make Money Not Art which mentions the bridge in passing, concentrating instead on the architect’s new walnut looking design for a Japanese Buddist temple. Crazy.)

Reo, eventually the meth will rot your teeth and make you crazy.

You know that, right?

Anything like the TACCOMA NAROWS BRIDGE?

Posted by: spurwing plover on December 20, 2005 08:41 AM

I would love to use this bridge in my show!

I could do a whole tribute to QEII and that horsey thing Charles married. Of course, I weigh 385lbs., but I can do the whacky royal hats and the money raised could go to support conservative candidates.

This bridge would be a stunning prop!

God bless George Bush and drag queens on both sides of the pond!

I wanted to say something but now that I've read spurwing's post I got nothing.

They can say 'thats how we roll' and mean it.

Posted by: roc ingersol on December 20, 2005 09:55 AM

You can check out the hydrolics in a picture here.

It looks like they are part of the railing structure, and provide a vertical lift that forces a horizontal contraction. When I saw it, I thought that the way to do it would be to have a single cable along the top rail that would pull (horizontal pull causing vertical contractions). What the hell do I know?

For every problem, there is exactly one solution that is simple, beautiful, and wrong.

I like Spurwing's comment. Who remembers Galloping Gerdie? Bonus points: Who has eaten at Galloping Gerdie's on I-5?

In regard to the Buddist temple, its funny that there was a Simpson's episode in which Springfield built a performing arts center based on the subsequently crumpled up letter from Marge Simpson to the Architect.

It reminds me of a one-way bridge concept I saw as an artist's concept in the children's book Dinotopia. It was a segmented suspension bridge designed so that the tension pulled one end of the bridge up off the ground, but if you approached the bridge from the other side, you could walk on, and your wight would lower raised side.

I don't know if it's physically possible, the way it was designed, but it was beautiful.

That was me doing a guest appearance on The Simpsons.

Speaking of bridges, how 'bout them New Yorkers that had to walk the bridges today because of that strike?

The TWU union will be fined $1 million/day and the workers will forfeit two days pay for every day on strike.

As Nelson Muntz would say: Hah - Haah!

Now what you got to say to that, sucka?

I'm afraid your grammar is a little off. The correct version of that sentence is, "Now what you gots to say to that, sucka?"

You're welcome.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.

Oof. Reviewers do not like Scary Movie 6. The criticism I keep hearing is that the movie mistakes a reference for an actual joke. The movie (they say) keeps Key Jangling a reference to another movie (or some other pop culture ephemera) and you expect there to be a joke but nope, the Key Jangle was the joke. Other reviewers say that the promise that "no lines will be uncrossed" is a fake-out, and that the movie is bland and inoffensively corporate.
Whoops! I posted about Dan Goldman losing the NY congressional primary. He might do that, but it won't be tonight -- the primary isn't held until June 23.
One race to keep an eye on: the Levi's heir nepo baby and egregious "Designated Liar" Dan Goldman -- one of the Democrats from a safe district Democrats send out to spread their most indefensible lies -- may actually lose his lower Manhattan/Brooklyn set due to, get this, antisemitism in the Democrat primary electorate.
Antisemitism? In the anti-Nazi Democrat Party? Sounds crazy, I know, but apparently the anti-Nazi Party wants to eliminate Jews.
