WaPo: Future of Newspapers Is Online and Paperless

Buzz Machien seems happy that they "get it."

I'm not so sanguine. If they "get it," that means the amazing variety of completely free media we now enjoy goes away.

It never bothered me that the New York Times was charging to read Paul Krugman. Who cares about Paul Krugman? It's the actual reportage I'm mostly interested in. If they deny me my Krugman-fix, but keep the actual news free, seems like a fair deal to me.

I suppose it could be a boon to bloggers, as we would pay the subscription rates for ten or twenty news syndicates and then present (fair-use) excerpts to a public who largely hasn't subscribed. But I also think their lawyers will become more aggressive about the fair use safe haven once they change their business model to getting the lion's share of revenue from online subscriptions.

The future of newspapers is online and paperless?

Why, it sounds like someone has discovered the moving-picture box I like to call a "Tee-Vee" that has 24 hour "online" and "paperless" news.

I wonder what they will say when they stumble across that other magical forum known as "radio".

Eh, they'll figure out nobody's gonna pay for their drivel, so they'll have to go for the paid advertising model.
So you'll have to wade through 5000 pop-ups to read about how evil the Catholic church is for not ordinaning the spotted owls priests or something.

A little off point but still media themed. Looks like MSNBC is pulling out all the stops to get viewers. Just look at that add in your left sidebar. (or to the right in comments.) Desperation is afoot!

I like reading newspapers. Or, at least I use to. You can take them with you and doodle on them, share them with strangers, etc. If they would only report the news I wouldn't have canceled all my subscriptions so many years ago.

I don't know. My wife gets the local paper, but both she and I get most of our national news, and even some local, online.

It seems that until the internet can target me with local news, this won't really be a reality. Because, you know, the only reason that USA Today has any sizable readership is that they get delivered outside of your hotel room door whenever you are travelling.

My wife gets the sunday paper for the coupons. Period.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
