Unwinnable Watch: Insurgents Call For Sunnis To Vote, Forbid Al Qaeda From Attacking

Mike sends this under the heading "Astounding news from Iraq." It does seem pretty big:

Saddam Hussein loyalists who violently opposed January elections have made an about-face as Thursday's polls near, urging fellow Sunni Arabs to vote and warning al Qaeda militants not to attack.

In a move unthinkable in the bloody run-up to the last election, guerrillas in the western insurgent heartland of Anbar province say they are even prepared to protect voting stations from fighters loyal to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, leader of al Qaeda in Iraq.

Graffiti calling for holy war is now hard to find.

Instead, election campaign posters dominate buildings in the rebel strongholds of Ramadi and nearby Falluja, where Sunnis staged a boycott or were too scared to vote last time around.

"We want to see a nationalist government that will have a balance of interests. So our Sunni brothers will be safe when they vote," said Falluja resident Ali Mahmoud, a former army officer and rocket specialist under Saddam's Baath party.

"Sunnis should vote to make political gains. We have sent leaflets telling al Qaeda that they will face us if they attack voters."

Sometimes Arab Conspiracy Theories Go Our Way Update: Village Idiot notes this cool bit from the second page:

But Saddam loyalists have turned against Zarqawi, a Jordanian militant whose fighters travel to Iraq from across the Arab world to blow themselves up in a bid to spark sectarian civil war.

"Zarqawi is an American, Israeli and Iranian agent who is trying to keep our country unstable so that the Sunnis will keep facing occupation," said a Baathist insurgent leader who would give his name only as Abu Abdullah.

You got us! Indeed, he is a Mossad/CIA agent!

The funny thing is, though, is that they're quite right about the net effect of Zarqawi's continuing butchery. It's only the terrorism that's keeping us there at all. Were there no (or low levels) of terrorism, we'd be out in a month.

This has always been the bizarre thing about the "insurgency."

Well, one of the two bizarre things about the insurgency. The other is that, oddly enough, we're protecting the Sunni population by being there. Because if this terrorism kept up with us not playing Daddy With The Big Pants in the country, the Kurds and Shi'as would just massacre and ethnically cleanse the Sunnis.

It sounds like the Pentagon and the President were right, identifying the insurgents as seperate forces with seperate agendas, who will cooperate when it is convenient, but not one moment longer.

And the strategy of exploiting the weak spots created by differing agendas? Brilliant.

Ace, you missed the PRICELESS bit from the end of page 2!!

I don't think the other Al Qaeda franchises are going to be too thrilled to hear Z-man is a JOOOOOoooo!

Recently, Al Qaida took over some Sunni Villages near the Syrian border. They put Taliban type restrictions on the women. That is: if the women violated any Taliban rule, such as appearing outside without a man, they were beaten or gang raped.

This irritated the Sunnis. So much so they got into firefights with the Al Qaida and drove them out. Now almost every Iraqi woman will turn in an Al Qaida member if spotted.

The only ones left to cheer for the Al Qaida rape squads are the MSM and the Democrats.

There is a Seattle, yes Seattle, radio talk show host, Lt. Bryan Suits, http://www.570kvi.com/x8491.xml , who is also a National Guard member and was in Iraq most of last year. He said we could end the insurgancy in a few days if we let the Kurds loose but it would be really, really ugly and would be a PR nightmare.

I don't know, seems to me we already have a PR (vs. actual reality) nightmare. So I do not see what's the big deal with letting the Kurds do a little "venting" and as a byproduct getting an attitude adjustment from some Sunnis.

Steve:

Sounds like a great idea. The Sunni people have raped, robbed, tortured, beaten, murdered and starved everyone else in Iraq for the past 30 years.

For that most of the Sunnis deserve to die

I've heard Lt. Suits. Pretty good show, and a better story. He did a lot of interviews for the morning and afternoon shows when he was in Iraq, I think.

I kid you not: an Arab (Palestinian) professor remarked last week that, in addition to other absolutely ridiculous claims and conspiracy theories, al-Qaeda members, including Zarqawi (yemakh shemo), were working for the US. The target of his remarks, an Iraqi vet who was sent home after being injured, agreed that the US supported al-Qaeda. What he missed was that the professor was saying the US supports al-Qaeda, not just supported it. I'm still enraged by his comments. Total anus he was. (And to top it off, I remained silent. The soldier was quiet and listened. When the professor finished and left the room to attend to something, the soldier good-naturedly chuckled and left. Angel he is. I still feel bad for not speaking up for the US and against his comments. I suppose I didn't want to be confrontational or lose my temper or waste my time.)

I suppose such rationalization is resorted to by a number of Muslims so as not to begin questioning Islam. Which is ridiculous, by me, but so it is.

Ace,

"Because if this terrorism kept up with us not playing Daddy With The Big Pants in the country, the Kurds and Shi'as would just massacre and ethnically cleanse the Sunnis."

You say this like it's a bad thing. The Stupid Shall Be Punished.

Subsunk

P.S. It's a submarine thing. Playing with nuclear weapons tends to make us less tolerant of stupid comments by stupid people. Bad manners and harsh language may lead to strategic launch. So if you don't really mean what you say (N Korea, take note), keep your mouth shut. Just thinkin' out loud here.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
