Shock: Levees Broke In NO Due To Shoddy Engineering

Disasterous short-cuts taken in a major construction project in Louisiana?! The deuce you say!

Actually, the fault seems to lie with the Army Corps of Engineers, who extended the levees down not even half the depth required to hold them up during a medium-sized hurricane. Apparently the problem was so obvious that engineers say they "cannot fathom" (ahem) how it was missed.

So, yeah, it may be a little too early to start suggesting corruption played a role. Perhaps this was just gross incompetence.

But this is Louisiana we're talking about. So we'll just have to see.

Come on? Louisiana corrupt? You have to be kidding right? (insert snort of sarcasm here)

DUDE! Google "New Orleans Levee Board" and see what you get. I was coming back home to NOLA on the 18th, and as I got near, I turned on WWL, the Big 870, and I heard a story about how the State Legislature just shot down a bill that would have changed the structure and accountability of the Orleans Board, which is by far the most corrupt. It's the "Good Ol' Boy" network par excellence down here. It's absolutely f**kin' ridiculous.... I f I had lost anything in the storm, luckily I didn't, and I live in Orleans Parrish, I would have sued the living hell out of them! You know, they don't even have to make their financial records public?!?! What kind of BS is THAT!?!? Things down here absof**kinglutely NEVER change.

Apologies for the rant, but there are junior Marines here with me that lost everything. Why does it always seem to happen to those that have the least amount of ability to deal effectively with it?

The Corps didn't destroy New Orleans, tax cuts for the rich did.

Posted by: Moonbay_One on December 1, 2005 05:19 PM

For the latest on the Orleans Parish Levee Board see:

http://www.nola.com/news/t-p/frontpage/index.ssf?/base/news-4/113344932947170.xml

A total tragic sick joke.

And even worse than this is the failure to build floodwalls -

(i) The environmentalists stymied a proposed floodwall across the mouth of Lake Ponchartrain

and

(ii) The New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board vetoed flood gates at the mouths of 2 of the 3 canals whose levees were breached.

New Orleans is struggling to get back on its feet, but it's a very very sad place right now, and what is coming out about incompetence (at best) makes it only more heartbreaking. What happened to the Mississippi Gulf Coast could not have been prevented, but it's now clear that what happened to New Orleans could have been prevented.

Rove and the Jooooos planned this.

I question the timing.

I still want Nagin's head on a pike. Fucking incompetent

Posted by: Iblis on December 1, 2005 11:48 PM

Blanco's if anything worse than Nagin, but they're both awful. Blanco's latest approval-disapproval ratings are 34-64.

Posted by: max on December 2, 2005 08:01 AM

What's both sad and amusing in all this is the refusal of leftis like Kevin Dumbo to retract or appolgize for their idiotic rants against President Bush for his statement, "Nobody expected the levees would be breached".

Unlike Andres Sullivan, Kevin doesn't even try to dissemble -- Mr. Dumbo just deletes his embarrasing posts.

The newspaper article is a bit vague about a few points which makes it hard to tell who really is at fault here.

It is possible that the contractor cut corners and didn't install the sheet piles to the required depth. If this was the case, the inspector on the job as well as the contractor would be the people most at fault.

It is possible that the design engineer designed the levee according to the Corp manual without using common sense and experience to double check his final design. Easy to do if you are a entry level engineer without any experience and little oversight. The people above him then just rubberstamped the design without properly checking the original assumptions used for design. Also easy to happen when dealing with the bureaucracy one finds on federal projects. In this case the engineers would be at fault.

Or the third possibility is that everyone involved in the project screwed up and everyone is at fault. Considering this is a federal project in Louisiana, very possible.

One thing that can been said for certain, New Orleans would have been better off without the walls.

The levees were weak becuase the eco-freaks at SIERRA CLUB sued to stop needed repairs becuase SIERRA CLUB cares only about the invisible levee guppy and not one about the people to live in NEW ORLEANS time to hang the SIERRA CLUB

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.

Oof. Reviewers do not like Scary Movie 6. The criticism I keep hearing is that the movie mistakes a reference for an actual joke. The movie (they say) keeps Key Jangling a reference to another movie (or some other pop culture ephemera) and you expect there to be a joke but nope, the Key Jangle was the joke. Other reviewers say that the promise that "no lines will be uncrossed" is a fake-out, and that the movie is bland and inoffensively corporate.
Whoops! I posted about Dan Goldman losing the NY congressional primary. He might do that, but it won't be tonight -- the primary isn't held until June 23.
One race to keep an eye on: the Levi's heir nepo baby and egregious "Designated Liar" Dan Goldman -- one of the Democrats from a safe district Democrats send out to spread their most indefensible lies -- may actually lose his lower Manhattan/Brooklyn set due to, get this, antisemitism in the Democrat primary electorate.
Antisemitism? In the anti-Nazi Democrat Party? Sounds crazy, I know, but apparently the anti-Nazi Party wants to eliminate Jews.

Democrat Senator Rueben Gallego, who served his wife with divorce papers when she was nine months pregnant so that he could marry his side-piece, counsels us that we should not judge Graham Platner for his infidelity because these things are personal matters, Racists:

Sahil Kapur
@sahilkapur

Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., on Platner: "We know that Graham has lived not your typical political experience. He's been very clear and open with his wife, and they worked through whatever they worked through. At the end of the day, this man has had 60 more town halls than Susan Collins has. He's winning the polls, he's willing to accept that he has grown as a person, and I think we should accept that."

Gallego says the drip-drip of revelations won't harm Platner's campaign.

"I think you guys are all in a bubble here right now. The drip, drip that's actually happening is Americans are really, really hurt the fact that gas is still high, food is still high, they can't buy a home, you can't afford rent. They're not going to care about text messages and everything else like that that happened years ago, especially when it was worked out between spouses."

I like that he says that it's okay that Graham Platner sexted 12 different women within months of marrying the woman to sponge off her because he wasn't then "living a political life" -- the clear meaning being, "We all cheat, we just don't cheat when we're running for office, and he didn't know he was running for office when he was sending dicpics to half the women he ran into."
Except he was running: His own wife turned the sexts over to his campaign.
And obviously Reuben Gallego didn't let his "political life" get in the way of his extramarital dating life:
