Memorializing The Murderers Of Flight 93

Long ago, Error Theory pointed out that the wall around the Flight 93 Memorial had 40 translucent blocks to symbolize the 40 victims of the terrorists...but that it also seemed to have an additional four translucent blocks, which would seem to memorialize the four dead terrorist killers who also died in the crash.

He says those strange "extra" translucent blocks are still there.

Some will say this is just looking for offense, trying to find symbols where they're not actually present. Nonsense. The entire memorial is abstract; it is designed precisely as a symbolic tribute.

If all of these little "secret features" of the memorial mean nothing, why is the designer so unwilling to change him? Why does he not just say, for example, "Ah, yes... I didn't intend it, but I do see where you might be a bit uncomfortable with the four additional translucent blocks. Let me just take them out. They didn't mean anything, anyhow."

When supposedly inadvertant and accidental bits of symbolism are defended for no good reason, I begin to doubt the inadvertance and accident of it all.

just don't question his patriotism

remember, it's not treason. it's patriotic to celebrate the lives of murderers

All part of that great big gushy hippie-dippie 'the terrorists were victims, too' philosophy of the morally equivocating left.

Not to sound too old fashioned but...

This is what happens when we allow historic events to be memorialized by abstract art rather than something more straightforward like a statue, plaque etc.

Artists who prefer the abstract as the medium for expressing this kind of thing tend to have a kneejerk hatred for authority and convention - it's kind of a prerequisite for practicing in that medium almost by definition.

And so we have things like the Islamic crescent -ahem- "bowl", WTC "we're sorry world" center, and so forth.

I know it sounds terribly cad-ish of me to say it, but maybe the simplest solution to monuments is to require them to be... simple.

Posted by: Scott on December 1, 2005 01:20 PM

Scott's right, but this is also what happens when we give projects like this to lefty know-nothing postmodern artist motherfuckers who couldn't say a good thing about America under threats of a stout beating.

Posted by: UGAdawg on December 1, 2005 01:35 PM

Why the hell are we having an "artist" design this anyway? We should have a graphic designer or someone who's more on the lines of a contractor rather than "this is my piece of art and I'll make it the way *I* want to".

Posted by: wilkeson on December 1, 2005 02:07 PM

I think a simple memorial plaque and some trees would be just fine. Somewhere else I read a suggestion of 40 eagle statues, which would be pretty damn cool, too.

Posted by: sandy burger on December 1, 2005 02:28 PM

I saw this travesty over at Little Green Footballs, and the Lizardoids were talking about expressing their indignation to their Congress critters and the alternative media outlets and such. It would seem this was insufficient in getting this piece of postmodern trash art thrown out in the first place, so I have another proposal. One that might actually work in getting this into the MSM.

Instead of fighting against it, how about we do the same kind of judo move that the GOP did against the Iraq cut-and-run and fight for it?

If we would publicly praise the memorial designers for their tolerance to Islam and point out each and every thing in the design that helps us understand our Muslim brothers and sisters and their devotion to their blessed faith, I bet we could get more attention. Double that if we could get an Islamic organization to publicly praise our fine, tolerant, enlightened memorial designers.

Geeze Ace, I had commented this on your first post about the memorial. You don't even read my comments, do you? *sniff*

;-)

Posted by: Rightwingsparkle on December 1, 2005 02:35 PM

Actually, I did read it. But Error Theory had already sent me the link the previous day (or earlier in the day). It was just on my list of things to get to.

They dishonor the memeories of the flight 93 heros by designing the memeorial in the shape of a cresent becuase the cross offends the wussies at the left-wing ACLU

I wd find four blocks of shit acceptable. Or how about 4 blocks of solidified pig fat?

I like the idea of specific trees planted to memorialize the passengers. I once read a description of a small town WWI memorial where the trees were chosen based on the individual in some way. For instance, an oak for Todd Beamer, for strength. Or perhaps the state tree based on where a given passenger lived. Add a few benches for people to rest and contemplate, a plaque listing the names and significance of the event and a lot of open space.

Earlier today I read a post by the wife of a just deployed servicemember commenting on the visibility of the sky over Ground Zero. She was struck by how open the area felt and how it made her look up - to the heavens. There's a bit of religious feeling for those who want to see it that way but in no way offensive in the process.

I'm old fashioned enough to not want every damn thing to make a 'statement'. Sometimes a memorial should just be a memorial.

This is an OUTRAGE. Time to fire the architect and start over.

Posted by: Redhand on December 1, 2005 10:55 PM

You know, they could have done something simple. Western Pennsylvania towns all have some sort of war memorial in the downtown squares that are simple (I grew in W.PA). Why not just a simple structure?? Crescent of Embrace?? BARF!! Post modern art just does't go over to well among the locals, especially if it is designed in the manner that would please a knuckle-dragging Islamist.

Posted by: Stillers on December 2, 2005 12:55 AM

I agree with Redhand, the designer should be fired...out of a goddamn cannon. Along with everyone else responsible for hiring that mouthbreather. KISYFM, Keep It Simple You Fucking Morons.

First get rid of this "sacred ground" bullshit. It's not sacred ground, it's just where the plane crashed. If we kept people off land that somebody died on we'd have to declare all of France off-limits...hrmmm.

The "sacred ground" is where the memorial should be. Put in a park, some marble flagstones, some shade trees and benches, and a bronze plaque. Maybe allow each family to commission a statue in honor of their loved one (we can memorialize the hijackers by naming the dumpsters after them).

I'm no landscape engineer, but I figure this can't take more than 8 months or so. In other words if we had stuck with something simple WE WOULD BE FUCKING DONE BY NOW.

In 2020 we can hold a competition among US art students for a statue to commemorate flight 93.

And when we capture OBL we can put him in a C-17, take him up to 30,000 ft., give him an O2 mask (we don't want him dying from hypoxia), and push him out over the crash site.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.

Oof. Reviewers do not like Scary Movie 6. The criticism I keep hearing is that the movie mistakes a reference for an actual joke. The movie (they say) keeps Key Jangling a reference to another movie (or some other pop culture ephemera) and you expect there to be a joke but nope, the Key Jangle was the joke. Other reviewers say that the promise that "no lines will be uncrossed" is a fake-out, and that the movie is bland and inoffensively corporate.
Whoops! I posted about Dan Goldman losing the NY congressional primary. He might do that, but it won't be tonight -- the primary isn't held until June 23.
One race to keep an eye on: the Levi's heir nepo baby and egregious "Designated Liar" Dan Goldman -- one of the Democrats from a safe district Democrats send out to spread their most indefensible lies -- may actually lose his lower Manhattan/Brooklyn set due to, get this, antisemitism in the Democrat primary electorate.
Antisemitism? In the anti-Nazi Democrat Party? Sounds crazy, I know, but apparently the anti-Nazi Party wants to eliminate Jews.

Democrat Senator Rueben Gallego, who served his wife with divorce papers when she was nine months pregnant so that he could marry his side-piece, counsels us that we should not judge Graham Platner for his infidelity because these things are personal matters, Racists:

Sahil Kapur
@sahilkapur

Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., on Platner: "We know that Graham has lived not your typical political experience. He's been very clear and open with his wife, and they worked through whatever they worked through. At the end of the day, this man has had 60 more town halls than Susan Collins has. He's winning the polls, he's willing to accept that he has grown as a person, and I think we should accept that."

Gallego says the drip-drip of revelations won't harm Platner's campaign.

"I think you guys are all in a bubble here right now. The drip, drip that's actually happening is Americans are really, really hurt the fact that gas is still high, food is still high, they can't buy a home, you can't afford rent. They're not going to care about text messages and everything else like that that happened years ago, especially when it was worked out between spouses."

I like that he says that it's okay that Graham Platner sexted 12 different women within months of marrying the woman to sponge off her because he wasn't then "living a political life" -- the clear meaning being, "We all cheat, we just don't cheat when we're running for office, and he didn't know he was running for office when he was sending dicpics to half the women he ran into."
Except he was running: His own wife turned the sexts over to his campaign.
And obviously Reuben Gallego didn't let his "political life" get in the way of his extramarital dating life:
