Bush the Uniter: 403 to 3 Against Withdrawing Troops"A disgrace," said Nancy Pelosi, referring to the Republican "stunt" (well, okay-- just stunt) to put the resolution to a vote. No, Nancy. The disgrace is that your caucus offers proposals like this in an unserious way, merely to damage the President and undermine the effort to win this war, without any real desire to vote in favor of them. The Democrats say this was a sham proposal, because Murtha didn't call for the "immediate" termination of operations in Iraq. Well, actually, he used exactly that word in press conferences. In his actual resolution (or bill?), he used the language "at the earliest practicable date," but that's dogfood. Bush also wants to get out "at the earliest practicable date," consistent with victory, a clause missing from Murtha's Cut and Run Bill. I want to get out "at the earliest practicable date." So, I would imagine, does every poster here. To paraphrase Bill Clinton, it all depends on what "practicable" practices. "Practicable," as far as victory, or "practicable," as far as a simple matter of the logistics necessary to safely bug out? (And on that point: Do the Democrats really imagine the Republican proposal imagined the unsafe evacuation of our troops?) Murtha's proposal seeks to obscure what exactly he means, and he shouldn't be allowed to do so. The American people have a right to know precisely what a proposal means, even if the antiwar left would prefer to keep such trifling details vague. Still, the GOP might have done a better job of making this resolution more closely track with Murtha's, by specifiying what Murtha left deliberately left out -- "at the earliest practicable date, regardless of whether or not victory has been achieved, and regardless of of whether or not Iraq will be immediately destabilized by the withdrawal and descend into civil war and state-sponsored terrorism." That's what the Murtha bill means, even if it is politic enough not to actually say so. The Democrats are complaining that this resolution, with its direct and blunt language about "immediate termination," does not fairly reflect the substance of the Murtha proposal. Bullshit. It represents the meaning of the proposal perfectly; it's just not phrased in disingenuous, obscurant language. Thanks for the "Bush the Uniter" headline to an anonymous poster. You anonymous guys really should post under a name, even a false one, just so everyone can get to know you. Even if you post as "Fartsy McStinkers," at least having a name will allow everyone to get to know the Fartsy McStinkers doctrine. Not really. But the Democrats and French are so closely aligned on this -- we cannot afford an American victory; true courage is displayed by rank cowardice -- that we might as well make it official. Republicans represent the interests of big American corporations; Democrats represent the interests of big French corporations. posted by Ace at 09:16 AM
CommentsWhat is amazing to me is that Nancy Pelosi can summon up the gall to actually use the word disgrace in any of her public statements. Frankly in addition to being the poster child for REALLY excessive 'optional' surgery, she pretty much is the living embodiment of 'disgrace'. But since she is I guess trying to improve her limited vocabulary I have a suggestion. Nancy look in the dictionary under SHAME . It's a concept with which you really need to grow more familiar. A LOT more familiar. Posted by: dougf on November 19, 2005 09:33 AM

Nancy Pelosi's smiling face is beside the word "hypocrite" in the dictionary. Which is understandable as she is the incarnation of hypocrisy. It is high time a public record is made, such as voting, when these idiots decide to engage in a massive gas blowout (I'm referring to talking). Posted by: Maranna on November 19, 2005 10:41 AM
So, Ms. Pukelosi, this was a, "disgrace," but what your DemocRAT cohorts in the Senate, led by Dingy Harry, "tantrum," Reid pulled was somehow, "noble and courageous?" I think it was an utterly brilliant move by the Republicans. I think you think so too, and that's why you are so, "outraged!" Funny how they can dish it out, but can't take it! Murtha decided to climb that ladder and now there he sits ... all comfy ... right next to Hanoi Jane and Khristmas in Kambodia Kerry. I'm a Viet Nam vet. I don't understand how he thinks this is any different than what the other loons did back in the '70s. Posted by: Cole in Texas on November 19, 2005 11:42 AM

Perhaps you folks could stop patting yourselves on the back and declaring victory for a minute to tell me exactly what the Republicans gained last night? I mean actually achieved? Achieved in the sense that Reid invoked Rule 21 and got Phase 2 of the Intelligence report restarted after the Republicans lied about pursuing it. I'm sure it's very comforting to quote a Democrat saying the resolution didn't reflect Murtha's bill and interpreting that as "They're whining they're crying they're scared" but that's just a lot of wishful thinking. I'm sure the Republicans, with their contempt for the American voter, think that such simpleminded tactics are sheer genius. But in case they haven't noticed, the voters are no longer reacting to their fear of terrorist attacks, and are actually thinking through what's going on in politics. I'll be looking forward to those polls that show the public has completely reversed their thinking on the war based on this brilliant Republican move. Posted by: Chris on November 19, 2005 12:14 PM

I think Chris is predicting that Bush won't be re-elected in 2008. Who could have seen that coming? lol! Posted by: on November 19, 2005 12:54 PM
So, Murtha didn't even vote for this thing? weak. This vote was not a coronation ceremony but a smack down for politicians who want to talk smack about the war. It makes it harder for Dems to piss on about how we are losing and we are ought to never have gone if they can't even vote to leave. Next time I come up with another gem like BushtheUniter, I will remember to post my name. Its weird what things actually stick though. Posted by: joeindc44 on November 19, 2005 01:11 PM

How can anyone take the Democrats seriously? Anyone who does should realize if we did what they demand, the Iraq civil authority will fall apart and any hope of a stable independent Iraq will disappear and everything we did in Iraq would have been a complete waste of our time money effort and troops. And when that happens, do you really think the Democrats will take responsibility and point out who was cheerleading and demanding US forces pull out? Posted by: Moonbat_One on November 19, 2005 02:03 PM
As Al-Zarqawi correctly labeled them, these chicken martyrs aren't helping his cause as much as they hope to. They need to put their money where their mouths are. Just as I thought, all you guys could come up with are weak, unoriginal insults and variations on "we win!" So, to see if there's a spark of actual intelligence on this board, I'll ask again. What, exactly did the Republicans achieve with their little gambit? You know, along the lines of how Reid totally owned the Republicans by invoking Rule 21. Hey Chris. Have you strapped on a bomb vest and kill a bunch of infidels? In not, then shut up you chicken martyr. Only those who have served Allah have a right to talk about the Iraq war. Posted by: Dale on November 19, 2005 03:32 PM

What, exactly did the Republicans achieve with their little gambit Wrong war, wrong time, unwinnable, Bush lied, bleat, bleat, bleat. 403 to 3. Let the "nuancing" begin. May I suggest, "I stood strongly againt this illegal, immoral, illegitimate and unwinnable war that is foolishly killing our soldiers (who strongly support it) before I voted for it knowing all of the alleged intelligence flaws we are assiming to exist," as an opening gambit? Or what Sortelli said. Posted by: VRWC Agent on November 19, 2005 04:07 PM
What did we gain? Oh, nothing but some nice video footage of a Congresswoman being booed and yelled at by Democrats when she read a letter from a true patriot. Campaign ad gold, gold I tells ya. Posted by: Sue Dohnim on November 19, 2005 05:08 PM
My rep, Wexler, was one of the traitorous 3. Maybe this will give some moderate dem an opening to attack him in the primaries now. That guy is weapons grade crazy. Posted by: Purple Avenger on November 19, 2005 05:38 PM
Here's another concrete political gain that Chris might want to mull over. The Cindy Sheehan crowd... you know, the wacked-out nutjobs, the ones that actually truly passionately hate America and want us to pull out in defeat now, the idiot wing of the Democratic Party (alright, fine, that's a distinction without a difference)... They're gonna be pissed at the Democrats again, and more likely to do us all a favor and remove themselves from the political process by voting Green. Posted by: Sortelli on November 19, 2005 05:42 PM
Furthermore, it's rather nice to start framing the debate our way again, you know? It's goddamn refreshing to see slobbering dipshits like Chris mumble things like "Of COURSE we can't just pack up and pull out now, that would be crazy! How could you ever think we entertained such an idea?" Posted by: Sortelli on November 19, 2005 05:44 PM
Pelosi talking about outrage was nothing compared to her attempt at the worst Jack Nicholson impression when she yelled "you can't handle the truth" towards the Republicans from the speaker's podium. C-Span needs to put together a highlights reel from last night, I tells ya. Posted by: NCVOL on November 19, 2005 05:47 PM
Some asshole asked what the Republican sponsored resolution achieved. For starters, the debate prior to the vote for the resolution showed how low, spineless, and stupid the House Democrats are. They were so stunned by the resolution that was introduced, they scrambled into damage control/spin mode. In other words, the Dems went to their old standby tactic of smearing the opposition by accusing them of smearing a "true patriot." Then the vote. The actual vote for the resolution forced the all the loud-mouthed critics to formally record if they really want an immediate troop withdrawal from the war -- something most of the Democrats have been squawking about for the last two years. The vote broke down this-a-way: Answered "Present" 6 Not Voting 22

He's so far off the scale, you'd need the Hubble telescope to find him. Posted by: Purple Avenger on November 19, 2005 06:23 PM
You know, along the lines of how Reid totally owned the Republicans by invoking Rule 21. Yeah. Brilliant. Rule 21: Closed session, no cameras, no soundbites. But yesterday, that was beautiful! I've never seen so much campaign material generated at one time as yesterday. Let's have this conversation next summer, Chris. lol! Posted by: BrewFan on November 19, 2005 06:33 PM
I'm going to suggest the following victory, Chris: The Dems have been going on and on about how the war is unwinnable and a big mistake-- for about three years now given that some started up the screed before the was actually started. The Dems chanted about Vietnam as they marched here and there in various left-leaning cities and the press was always there to cover the loons. So some of the Dems were emboldened by Bush's silence. And so at the grand poke-her (spam blocker forces that spelling) table that politics represents guys like Pelosi, Murtha, Reid, Kennedy, Kerry (gosh this list is long), et cetera many of the Dems pushed all their political chips to the center of the proverbial table. The Dems thought this a good idea because they just knew in their hearts that the public opinion polls they're always touting would keep Republicans from responding aggressively. And the media touted the strategy and hyped the 57% number I've heard so often recently. And the House Republicans called their bluff. The House Republicans looked at the chip stack the Dems had and saw that the votes for cowardice and loss simply weren't there. And now the Dems have been forced to lay their cards on the table. And many voters -- but most especially the Republican base -- now know the Dems were weaker politically than they tried to represent. And also that the Republicans are not scared to respond to the attacks that have gotten more enraged, more detached and less lucid since the election. Posted by: Birkel on November 19, 2005 06:37 PM
OR -- (Alternative Explanation I Know Your Conspiratorial Heart Will Love) Karl Rove used his mind control rays to deny your Fitzmas wishes then got some Dem pols to go absolutely bat-shit insane and propose we should surrender to Zarqawi. And then Dems were released from the rays and got to vote against pulling out. Posted by: Birkel on November 19, 2005 06:38 PM
OR -- (My Personal Favorite) Bob Dole's Cock is now very pleased and that's enough for most Republicans. Posted by: Birkel on November 19, 2005 06:39 PM
And also that the Republicans are not scared to respond to the attacks that have gotten more enraged, more detached and less lucid since the election. The GOP sat back and took the nonsense while the loons went further and further afield and then swatted them hard in their looniest weak spot. Good fire discipline. That part really does sound like Rovian strategy. I hope we'll see more. Posted by: VRWC Agent on November 19, 2005 06:49 PM

Wasn't Murtha's bill about buggering out Iraqis IT IS HARD TO TELL! Most Democratic plans have a "Fuck the Iraqis up the squeaker" clause. "Sorry Iraq, they told me you had WMD. I'm just not feeling it anymore. Here's twenty bucks, go buy yourself something pretty to make yourself feel good, like maybe some Preperation H and one of them tent thingies all the ladies are gonna have to wear when Sharia gets imposed. HAVE A NICE LIFE" -Dems to people in far off country they could care less about Posted by: Sortelli on November 19, 2005 08:42 PM
Still patting yourselves on the back I see. So what did that get you? I'm looking forward to the polls which are heavily weighted Democratic to put a better spin on this so that I don't have to change my shorts so often tomorrow. Posted by: not Chris on November 19, 2005 09:30 PM
Instead of the Republican measure that was voted on, even if the House had considered Murtha's original proposal, they would have voted it down. That isn't the point. The real issue at hand is the question of how, exactly, do we extricate ourselves from the hellhole that is Iraq? We don't know why we're there, we don't know what we're doing there. We don't know what would qualify as a "victory," so we're left with Donald "douchebag" Rumsfeld's assessment that it could be "three months, three years, six years or twelve years." Now, considering the expense of the Iraq engagement, and considering the value of the outcome of whatever we do there, it seems sensible that we get the hell out of there ASAP. It's been pointed out that Arab strategists don't react to enemy withdrawal in the same way Western countries do. That is, our removal of troops from the arena is likely to result in an immediate cessation of hostilities. That's a given, based on historical precedent. So by pulling out, we stop the endless flow of monies to the area, redeploy our taxpayers' cash into more domestically profitable purposes and prevent the loss of more American lives. Five soldiers were killed in Iraq today, and I could not explain to those soldiers' families why their children died. Could you? What could you say? That they died to promote democracy in the Middle East? That's not why we went to war, that's just the latest justifcation du jour. Finally, our representatives in government seem to be getting the message: explain why we are there, or get us out. The sooner the better. Posted by: The Raven on November 19, 2005 09:57 PM
You know you've struck a nerve when they have to start saying "That isn't the point. The real point is...[fill in the blank]*" * My favorite: THE HAMBURGLER STOLE ALL THE HAMBURGERS FROM TEH IRAQIANS! Posted by: Sortelli on November 19, 2005 10:01 PM
You fucking idiots. It's amusing to see how you have to keep pumping each other up, so the fear won't start to creep back in. "But we were on the winning side just a little while ago. Everyone agreed with us. What happened? It's getting cold, so cold. " If yopu jerkoffs had half a clue about what's going on, you'd know that Reid doesn't have to pull Rule 21 again. He already made Frist look like a sputtering fool, and that image is already in the public's mind. I'm sure you think that the Republicans can cleverly keep proposing the same bullshit, and the stupid Democrats won't know what to do. That just shows the contempt you asswipes have for the American voter, that they won't see a stunt like that for the foolishness it is. Now you morons can go back to your uncreative mindless insuults, and if you wish real hard, maybe the real world won't come in. Posted by: Chris on November 19, 2005 10:08 PM
The real issue at hand is the question of how, exactly, do we extricate ourselves from the hellhole that is Iraq? It's called victory. Unlike endless negotiations and appeasement, it's the thing that actually makes dedicated enemies go away. Just shut up, let us drive and you'll see what it looks like. For a change. our removal of troops from the arena is likely to result in an immediate cessation of hostilities. That's a given, based on historical precedent. Feel free to make citations, but the majority of Iraqis want what we are giving them; the neighboring totalitarians are wetting themselves over it -- for a reason; and our people on the ground - who have had time to get to know the local situation fairly well - are extremely gung ho. So listen to them if you don't want to listen to the rest of the sane side of America. Five soldiers were killed in Iraq today, and I could not explain to those soldiers' families why their children died. Could you? Yes. And I would expect their families wouldn't need to be told. our representatives in government seem to be getting the message: explain why we are there, or get us out. We debated the reasons for going there for an effin' YEAR AND A HALF before we went. Your memory problems are not a basis for US policy. Posted by: VRWC Agent on November 19, 2005 10:12 PM
Raven, first of all let's agree that you don't care about the sodiers -- dead or alive. You don't know why we're in Iraq? "It's been pointed out that Arab strategists don't react to enemy withdrawal in the same way Western countries do." Pointed out by whom? This is so stupid, nothing can possibly top this sheer stupidity. "That is, our removal of troops from the arena is likely to result in an immediate cessation of hostilities. That's a given, based on historical precedent." I stand corrected. Your stupidity knows no bounds.
Posted by: Bart on November 19, 2005 10:17 PM
that image is already in the public's mind. Here's a test: knock on the doors of 5 neighbors and ask how they feel about Reid invoking Rule 21. You know, the one that makes everything after the invocation invisible. The one that ended with the reaffirmation of a promised re-re-reexamination of an issue that has been repeatedly resolved to the left's disadvantage. (Election 2000, anyone?) lol I'm sure you think that the Republicans can cleverly keep proposing the same bullshit, and the stupid Democrats won't know what to do. That just shows the contempt you asswipes have for the American voter No. The American voters are the ones who put us in power. Our contempt is reserved for you moonbats who still don't get it. Ahh, the chicken martyr returns. Making Frist look weak isn't hard. Most Republicans complain about his weak leadership and lack of backbone. It was funny to watch Dingy Harry throw a temper tantrum. Yes, the real world. The one where Saddam is no longer in power; where the Iraqi people, including women, have voted twice and are getting ready to vote again; where improvements are made daily; where the training facilities have gotten to the point where Iraqis' military basic training happens without need of translators because the have enough homegrown drill instructors; etc. Continue living in your world where Vietnam=Iraq; where democrats take a military victory and turn it into a defeat by cutting funding. Enjoy the party of surrender. Posted by: Dale on November 19, 2005 10:20 PM

No, I can believe that she's the one who got treatment. Really. But if your WoW gamesmanship is accompanied by avid masturbation, you may want to consider adjusting your tactics or refitting your warrior. Just sayin'. Posted by: VRWC Agent on November 19, 2005 11:05 PM
The Democratic leaders are truly hypocrites. The vote last night absolutely proved that. When finally given the chance to " fish or cut bait", they chose to slither back under their collective rocks. Sheer, no balls cowardice was clearly demonstrated by these folks. Posted by: Snorkel on November 19, 2005 11:15 PM
Are you kidding? Of course I don't masturbate while I play WoW. I need that hand to use the mouse. Posted by: Sortelli on November 19, 2005 11:20 PM
Hey lauraw: "you liberal retards" "you motherfuckers" "SHUT THE FUCK UP" "slobbering dipshits like Chris" "Some asshole" "Maybe Chris is too stupid" "Your stupidity knows no bounds." "another example of a Leftist retard" "Chris the Commie" "I'm a fucking moron. But so is Chris" Looks like you've got a whole nursery school full of inner children here. It'd be funny, but the fetal alcohol syndrome makes it kinda sad. OK, you can go back to telling each other how clever you are now. It must be comforting to have a place you can go where people will tell you everyhing is still OK. Posted by: on November 19, 2005 11:33 PM
Another empty colon vents the usual. Difference is that Laura tends to follow up with, or to have previously posted, something substantial to justify the characterization. Big difference, blank boy. Posted by: VRWC Agent on November 19, 2005 11:40 PM
Colon, The difference between you and we is that we are enjoying this, and basking, yet again, in victory. You, not so much. Its almost like you're angry or something. Word to the Democrats: Don't drive angry. Nobody wants to ride with the guy who has veins popping out of his neck. Posted by: lauraw on November 19, 2005 11:51 PM
And BTW, we're not pumping ourselves back up. We're GLOATING. There is a difference. Posted by: lauraw on November 19, 2005 11:54 PM
You know who Mr. Colon is, don't you? Posted by: Bart on November 20, 2005 12:08 AM
Gloating is good for the soul. It says so right here on this pamphlet from the gloat-breeders association. At least three serves of gloat per day. Oh, wait. That's goat. Damn, what am I going with all this gloat I've piled up? Posted by: Pixy Misa on November 20, 2005 02:09 AM
You can never have too much gloat. Raises your good cholesterol, lowers the bad cholesterol and never leaves the seat up in the middle of the night. Posted by: S. Weasel on November 20, 2005 06:59 AM
No, it's not Josie. It's a sneaky fuck who knows he'll get torn apart if he used his real handle. Well, shit. Let's tear him apart anyway. Looks like you've got a whole nursery school full of inner children here. It'd be funny, but the fetal alcohol syndrome makes it kinda sad. OK, you can go back to telling each other how clever you are now. It must be comforting to have a place you can go where people will tell you everyhing is still OK. Like say...Kos, Democratic Underground, Atrios, O-Dub, TPM, etc...etc...? Let's face some issues here - the Democrats were put into a hell of a spot the other day, and it's your fault. The anti-war (read: anti-Bush) moonbat left are pushing the Dems into using some ridiculously extremist rhetoric and the Republican party finally decided to call their bluff. So the Dems you support were stuck. If they meant what they've said about Iraq, they would have voted to pull the troops out. But if they voted that way, it would likely piss off a lot of voters. Given the choice between pissing you off and pissing off voters, they chose the voters over you. That's what's really got you angry, isn't it? They disproved all of this bullshit you've been spewing about the unpopularity of the war with one vote. If the war were really as unpopular as you like to pretend, they would have jumped at the chance to vote against it, but they didn't. Posted by: Edward R. Murrow on November 20, 2005 07:46 AM
I like to think this is all above partisanship (gasp! cries of Naive! Fool!). The world was beginning to get the idea that there was such disention within the country that there really was a chance that we would withdraw and abandon the fledging democracy in Iraq. This vote puts paid to that idea. There is no constituancy in the US government for cut-and-run. Its important that the Iraqis and the world heard that. And that Pelosi was bitch-slapped. Thats always good for the free world. Tob Posted by: toby928 on November 20, 2005 10:37 AM
Amen to that. Posted by: Sortelli on November 20, 2005 05:31 PM
It was me that wrote the post at 11:33. If it takes a while to finish a post it automatically removes your name. What's kind of funny/sad about this place is the amount of time you guys spend congratulating yourselves for ripping peole a new one, or whatever. How pathetic do you have to be to think that you can actually type tough? What, do your keyboards beg for mercy? How really, really sad. You actually pat yourselves and each other on the back for the tired insults and content-free rants that you take for cleverness. And yes, it is like Kos, which is why I never spend any time there. It's refreshing to know that you recognize what level you're on. Do you realize that about 90 percent of the comments here can be posted on any thrread, and it wouldn't make a difference? And it's the same old tired shit. Okay lauraw, repeat after me: buh-bye Have you ever written an original word? Now I've got to go. I'm feeling kind of deflated from the incredible outpouring of public support for the Republicans following their incredible genius move Friday. Posted by: Chris on November 21, 2005 09:02 PM
Oh look lauraw! I think you hurt Chrissy's feelings. Got him feeling all deflated. I can think of a few original words for him, but I am too much of a lady. Liberals are such whiney babies, aren't they? Posted by: Rightwingsparkle on November 21, 2005 09:39 PM
Yes, Chris, I would love to have a content filled, in-depth discussion with you about how the invocation of the dreaded Rule 21 is inspiring voters across the fruited plane to embrace the leftist agenda. Actually, I changed my mind. I'd rather just call you a jackass and move on with my day. Jackass.

Victor Davis Hanson on Trump's unstoppable rise to power. A long form interview (70min) that really captures the Trump phenomenon, where his mind is, and where we are going. [dri] Long but really insightful.
Update for nerds: Tweet from VDH on Trump's inaugural speech (contrasted with Biden's legacy). The video is great, but the transcript when VDH starts talking about the Latin phrases from the Great Seal is pretty bad. [KT]
