France Tries Innovative Approach To Unrest: AppeasementI'm surprised it took them this long. More welfare & government guarantees for the disaffected Youth of Undetermined Ethnic Extraction. It's hard to fault France with a perfectly clear conscience for this, because a lot of people who know France better than I do seem to think the French truly have treated the YOUEE's pretty shabbily and have excluded them, de facto, from jobs. Still... good to know what US tourists will have to do next time America wants French agreement on a UNSC resolution. Just light up some Peugots. posted by Ace at 09:02 PM
CommentsAnd here I thought that we unruly, bigoted Americans were so bad because we used to have slaves (so did France, but that's another story), and we had a "Civil War" to get past that, and we're nothing but a bunch of bigots anyway, and (fill in the blank). All they have and have had for decades and still have is a significant part of their own population that they systematically abuse by refusing to provide equal opportunity for employment, systematically abuse by inhibiting their travel (they can be detained simply for being in the "wrong" neighborhood), and systematically bullying them into social submission, all while reaching out with the hand that's not slapping them down and offering them degrading welfare. Yeh, we Americans certainly are immoral bastards, aren't we? Posted by: Carlos on November 8, 2005 09:12 PM
Ace, Ace, you're both right! France has treated its immigrant populations like shit ... *and* the French government is now caving in pathetically. It's lose-lose!! Posted by: Knemon on November 8, 2005 09:15 PM
France is doing the only thing it can - as a politically correct liberal government. PC morons can never blame the guilty, only the innocent. So the rioters can never be held accountable - that's why the army won't be sent in - they'd be harming innocents. Since the rioters are actually victims, the answer is always money. Chirac did exactly what I expected him to do - because he is liberal. This is also why France refuses to acknowledge that Islam is the problem - it wouldn't be politically correct. No matter how many churches are burned to chants of "allahu akbar!" France is over. It's done. More concessions to follow, more money (jizya) and all perfectly conforming to muslim fantasies straight out of the Qur'an. Posted by: William Thrash on November 8, 2005 09:30 PM
Whew! Thank goodness. For a moment I thought France was going to change, which would have required me to revise my impressions, perceptions, and beliefs on and about France. But all's as it used to be! Hurrah! Posted by: Muslihoon on November 8, 2005 09:33 PM
De Villepin knows his history I see. France's plan to fight the rioters basically parallels the plan Charles Martel used to drive off the Moors in 732 AD. It was the Appeasment of Tours, I believe, where Charles gave the Moorish cavalry lots of money, preferential treatment, and expanded social services, and promised to crack down on discrimination against them. It was this confrontation which earned Charles the epithet "Martel" which means "little bitch" for the way he bent over and took it in the rear. Posted by: Bagpipes on November 8, 2005 09:38 PM
In the big scheme of things, expect another couple decades of EU countries figuring out how to manage their need for immigrants. Britain has its SE Asian population, Germany has the Turks, Spain has North Africans... and they all have a hell of time working it out. (As does Japan.) Germany's guest-worker program looked better in the first years than it does now, with second-generation Turkish-Germans no longer content with 2nd class citizenship... I've spent some time in those countries, and sometimes its hard not to see a lot of useful, dynamic creative energy in those marginalized populations. Books, movies, and all kinds of cultural productions are increasingly coming from the margins in those countries. But as screwed up as the US is in many ways, a day in NYC always convinces me that this country is WAY WAY ahead of those in allowing immigrants to add to the country's values. Posted by: tubino on November 8, 2005 09:47 PM
They deserve some credit, I suppose. Posted by: Slim on November 8, 2005 10:02 PM
"Jizya" is right. Time to spread that word. Posted by: someone on November 8, 2005 11:26 PM
Appeasement can be a tactic - if you use the time to get everything set so that you will be ready to throw down when it flares up again. Unfortunately, I do not now think the French are going to throw down anything the next time but the towel. Posted by: Mikey on November 9, 2005 07:50 AM
This obviously calls for a two-state solution. France needs to withdraw to its pre-732 borders and end its illegal occupation of Paristine. The French and the Paristinians need to learn to live together in peace. Posted by: Sue Dohnim on November 9, 2005 08:52 AM
That's right, Tubino. We have a very welcoming tradition that says "bring 'em all." The US has certainly been successful with it using an Aristotelian approach to life (individual man is responsible for his own actions and can know the truth) rather than having the state tell you how to live. The problem we're going to face now is that a very violent religion using the technology of bombs and guns is growing inside the US. Whereas all the other religions promote tolerance, the Islamic faith cannot tolerate anything non-muslim. We're heading for the same problems. We will not impress a muslim by sounding all sophisticated in our best imitations of egotistical, cosmopolitan news anchors on television. They'll saw our heads off no matter how "moderate" we sound. Has anyone seen the Italian documentary on Fallujah? I don't mean to steer this thread off-topic, it's just that I'd like to get more info on that story. Apparently Michael Moore, Z-net, Kos and the usual left folks are pushing this story about white phosphorous having been used to burn people in Fallujah. Anybody got any links or info? Oh no! Hamas' de facto press agent at the UN complains that she can't use her credit cards or rent a card now that she's been sanctioned as a terrorist operative
Why does this keep happening to members of the "political organization" (per Tucker Carlson) of Hamas?!?!
Tucker Carlson claims that it's weird that Ted Cruz is interested in the massacre of Christians by Nigerian Muslims, because he has "no track record of being interested in Christians," then blows off the massacre of Christians by Nigerian Muslims, saying it might or might not be a real concern
Tucker Carlson enjoys using the left-wing tactic of "Tactical Ignorance" to avoid taking positions on topics. Is Hamas really a terrorist organization? Tucker can't say. He hasn't looked into it enough, but "it seems like a political organization to me." Are Muslims slaughtering Christians in Nigeria? Again, Tucker just doesn't know. He hasn't examined the evidence yet. He knows every Palestinian Christian who said he was blocked from visiting holy sites in Bethlehem, but he just hasn't had the time to look into the mass slaughter of Christians in Nigeria that has been going on since (checks watch) 2009. He doesn't know, so he can't offer an opinion. Wouldn't be prudent, you know? Don't rush him! He'll sift through the evidence at some point in the future and render an opinion sometime around 2044. Of course, if you need an opinion on Jewish Perfidy, he has all the facts at his fingertips and can give you a fully informed opinion pronto. Say, have you ever heard of the USS Liberty incident...? You'd think that the main issue for Tucker Carlson, who pretends to be so deeply concerned about Palestinian Christians being bullied by Jews in Israel (supposedly), would be the massacre of 185,000 Christians in Nigeria itself. But no, his main problem is that Ted Cruz is talking about it, "who has no track record of being interested in Christians at all." And then he just shrugs as to whether this is even a real issue or not. Whatever we do we must never "divide the right," huh? Tucker is attacking Ted Cruz for bringing the issue up because he's acting as an apologist for Jihadism, and he can't cleanly admit that Jihadists are killing any Christians, anywhere. There is no daylight between him and CAIR at this point. One might conclude that Tucker Carlson himself isn't interested in the plight of Christians -- except as they can be used as a cudgel to attack Jews. Just gonna ask an Interesting Question myself -- why is it that Tucker Carlson's arguments all track with those shit out by Qatarian propaganda agents and the far left? That if Jews crush an ant underfoot it is worldwide news, but when Muslims slaughter Christians it elicits not even a vigorous shrug?
Garth Merenghi is interviewed by the only man who can fathom his ineffable brilliance -- Garth Merenghi
From the comments: I once glimpsed Garth in the penumbra betwixt my wake and sleep. He was in my dream, standing afar, not looking my way, nor did he acknowledge me. But I felt seen. And that's when I knew I was a traveler on the right path. I'm glad he's still with us. Now that's some Merenghian prose. Garth Merenghi on the writer's craft Greetings, Traveler. If you still have not experienced Garth Merenghi -- Author, Dream-weaver, Visionary, plus Actor -- the six episodes of his Darkplace are still available on YouTube and supposedly upscaled to HD. (Viewing it now, it doesn't appeared upscaled for shit.) I think the second episode, "Hell Hath Fury," is the best by a good margin. Try to at least watch through to that one. It's Mereghi's incisive but nuanced take on sexism.
Update on Scott Adams:
Scott Adams had approval for this cancer drug but they hadn't scheduled him to get it. He was taking a turn for the worse. Trump had told him to call if he needed anything, so he did. Talked to Don Jr (who is in Africa) , then RFK Jr, then Dr Oz. Someone talked to Kaiser and he was scheduled. Shouldn't have needed it but he did and he says it saved his life.

Schmoll: 53% of New Jersey likely voters say their neighbors are voting for Ciattarelli, while 47% say the cheater/grifter Mikie Sherrill
The "who do you think your neighbors are voting for" question is designed to avoid the Shy Tory problem, wherein conservative people lie to schmollsters because they don't want to go on record with a likely left-winger telling them who they're really voting for. So instead the question is who do you think your neighbors are voting for, so people can talk about who they themselves support without actually having to admit it to a left-wing rando stranger recording their answers on the phone.

Interesting football history: How the forward pass was created in response to the nineteen -- 19! -- people killed playing football in 1905 alone
The original rules of football did not allow forward passes. The ball was primarily advanced by running, with blockers forming lines with interlocked arms and just smashing into the similarly-interlocked defensive lines. It was basically Greek hoplite spear formations but with a semi-spherical ball. As calls to ban the sport entirely grew, some looked for ways to de-emphasize mass charges as the primary means of advancing the ball, and some specifically championed allowing a passer to throw the ball forward.
