It's really sad when not only are people who aren't wacko Leftists actually taking Chuck Schumer statements at face value, but welcoming them and considering them to be good news for their side.

It's really sad when I am expected to be such a party hack that I will reject my own opinion when it comes out of the wrong mouth.

The analogy of blind squirrels and acorns comes to mind...

Chuck Schumer is a partisan hack. He only says things that further Chuck Schumer, and then maybe the Dems, if what the Dems want is what Chuck Schumer wants. With a large group of people screeching about Miers, do people really think he'd say anything different? That he's telling the truth? He's going to say things to encourage the screechers, and it sure looks like he's succeeding. If I found him agreeing with me over something as important as this, I'd be wondering what I'm doing wrong, not congratulating him (and myself) for "growing in office." (Reid at first approved of Miers, because she was on his "advisory" list given to Bush before the nomination. He's been awfully quiet, hasn't he? Because he's no dummy.)

And even worse, the screechers are making the case for saying that it's perfectly okay to oppose a nominee simply for disliking the candidate. This means that they accept the Dems premises for their filibusters, and won't be able to complain about future filibusters. The principle that got Ginsberg and Breyer confirmed will be gone, and we will all be the poorer for it.

Again, what exactly do you win if this nomination fails? Do people really think that the Dems will be satisfied with your helping them to their victory and then say, "okay, we've made our point, you can have your Janice Rodgers Brown now?" No one, repeat no one, will be confirmed without 60 votes. That puts squishes like Lincoln Chafee and the Maine Twins in charge. Unless you think Miers is too rightwing, and your goal is to get someone more "moderate", your victory is going to be shortlived. The same goes for Luttig, McConnell or any other name at the top of your list. (And what makes you think those people are going to want to go though this sort of thing when the real pros on the Dems side go after them? There were already reports that Bush went with Miers because several people on those short lists turned him down...)

Then there are the reports that the GOP base, the people who actually vote, don't share this goal of dumping Miers. How's that gonna play when next year when these people realize they've been betrayed? I do know this, if the GOP lose seats in the Senate or House next year, the people at the top of the list to be blamed will be Will, Bork, Coulter, The Weekly Standard and National Review for their great victory this fall, but the people who will be punished will be those running for office, when a large part of that 93% say, "why bother?".
