Redhanded: Computer Snafu Reveals UN Whitewashing Harari Assassination Report

The Times of London has a huge story today:

The United Nations withheld some of the most damaging allegations against Syria in its report on the murder of Rafik Hariri, the former Lebanese Prime Minister, it emerged yesterday.

The names of the brother of Bashar al-Assad, President of Syria, and other members of his inner circle, were dropped from the report that was sent to the Security Council.

The confidential changes were revealed by an extraordinary computer gaffe because an electronic version distributed by UN officials on Thursday night allowed recipients to track editing changes. …

The final, edited version quoted a witness as saying that the plot to kill Mr Hariri was hatched by unnamed “senior Lebanese and Syrian officials”. But the undoctored version named those officials as “Maher al-Assad, Assef Shawkat, Hassan Khalil, Bahjat Suleyman and Jamal al-Sayyed”.

The deleted names represent the inner core of the Syrian regime. ...

Mr Annan had pledged repeatedly through his chief spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, that he would not change a word of the report by Detlev Mehlis, a German prosecutor. But computer tracking showed that the final edit began at about 11.38am on Thursday — a minute after Herr Mehlis began a meeting with Mr Annan to present his report. The names of Maher al-Assad, General Shawkat and the others were apparently removed at 11.55am, after the meeting ended.

At a press conference yesterday Herr Mehlis insisted that Mr Annan had not pressurised him into making changes. “No one outside of the report team influenced these changes and no changes whatsoever were suggested by the Secretary-General,” he said.

There's a lot about this story that isn't known. How independent was this reporting team? If no one inside the UN not on the team influenced the changes, why were they made only after the report was handed in? And why so quickly afterward?

Even if the reporting team wanted to make those changes all along, leaving out the names of the assassins as perhaps too politically explosive, what does that say about the UN's ability to serve as an independent "chips fall where they may" investigator (stop laughing). Why would anyone trust them again? Why did anyone trust them in the first place?

Wouldn't everyone be screaming their heads off if any other investigative agency on a homicide refused, for polical reasons, to name the actual killer? Doesn't it make you quesition the institution itself?

Okay, maybe they had good reasons. Maybe the proof just wasn't there. But the last moment editing really makes this whole thing stink.

Update: Kofi Responsible for Changes?

The Jerusalem Post has more:

The last-minute alterations made to the Detlev Mehlis report on the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri may have been made under pressure by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Israel Radio reported Friday afternoon.

A diplomatic source reported that Annan had an interest in removing the name of Syrian President Bashar Assad's brother and brother-in-law, along with other important Syrian officials, from the list of suspects in the Hariri killing. ...

Annan, according to speculations, was concerned that the harsh report could cause political instability in Syria, perhaps even leading to an overthrow of the Assad regime, and thus preferred a watered-down version of the report.

Speculation will now begin as to whether other countries (read: the US) signed off on the whitewash, as a concession to get other countries to go along with added pressure on Syria. Not such a bad move if so.

Still, the thing now looks to have blown up in whoever's behind its' face. And all because someone lacked the mad tech-skillz.

The world, ever more obviously, belongs to the guys from tech support.

Another Update For Ya:

Apparantly when this thing blew up, the prosecutor tried to sell the thing thusly:

German Detlev Mehlis insisted at a hastily-arranged news conference that the names had been removed only to maintain their "presumption of innocence", once he learned that his confidential report was to be made public.

So, what, the investigator/preparer of the report suddenly learns at the very last moment the report ain't gonna be kept secret?

And what about all the other names mentioned? Why is it that only the high up Syrian regime types get the presumption?

The Word Unheard scoffs:

This is bogus. If that were the case, the public report would have no names at all. Instead, there are the names of tens of key figures garnered through interviews, testimony and investigation.

What then of Mr. Saddik, Abdel-Kareem Abbas, General Ghazali, General Al-Hajj, Colonel Ghassan Tufayli, Jamil Al-Sayyed, General Mustapha Hamdan, General Raymond Azar, Nasser Kandil, Sheikh Ahmad Abdel-Al, Walid Abdel-Al, Mahmoud Abdel-Al, Raed Fakhreddin, Yehya Al-Arab, Khaled Midhat Taha, Ziad Ramadan, Jamea Jamea, Abel Rahim Yussef Murad, Tarek Isamt Fakhreddin, Brigadier General Faysal Rasheed, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Walid Al-Moallem, Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk Sharaa, General Naji Mulaeb, or General Aouar?

Presumption of guilt?

There is a foul odor yet again emanating from Turtle Bay.

Stinkiness at the UN, indeed.

Ace,

I hate to say it.

But I blame McChimpy BusHitlerburton.

No wait, Karl RovEvil.

No, hold on...Sharon did it.

That's it.

...

At some point and time, the reality will finally take hold that the UN is corrupt beyond repair, genocidal in its hatred and policies toward Israel, and that those who would have us swear our fealty to it and other world anti-American, Judeocidist, and anti-capitalist bureaucracies are just plain nuts.

Really.

...

Hey wait, maybe we can get some French or Russian UN diplomats to oversee the reform of the UN?

You know, when they're not selling their Oil-for-Despot-Controlled-Mass Murder vouchers.

Sigh.

It may have been retards or sabotage that botched this coverup, but I am thankful either way.

What font did the report use? What about the kerning?

Posted by: Eric J on October 22, 2005 01:26 PM

I'm just glad that Herr Mehlis was not "pressurised" by Kofi Annan. That would be just damn scary to see.

That is what happens when you trust important matters to Microsoft software. Microsoft does a lot of great stuff, but they simply do not care about security.

I would suggest that NYC power grid "arrange" for a "power outage" at the UN right about now.

That place is going to be a beehive of electronic shreading now that this is known.

As to the 'speculation' that Kofi Annan wanted the names of prominent (loose term, very loose) Syrian thugs...errrrr...officials expunged because it would lead to 'ploitical instability' for the Syrian regime...

All I have to say is 'Well, no sh*%. That's how you deal with a Terror Sponsoring State, dumba$$.'

Would you rather deal with the short-term influx of terrorists seeking new turf (ie Iraq) or the long term stabilization of a State Sponsor of Terror lending the full intelligence and military apparatus to 'The Cause'?

BTW, is Syria still one of the Chairs of the UN's Human Rights Committee? Just curious.

I whole-heartedly concur with James Joyner of Outside the Beltway, who said:

"Yesterday, I was briefly worried that the UN might have done something worthwhile, in stark contrast to what I've observed in over two decades of studying international politics. The Times has quickly restored the natural order of the Universe."

Natural Order, indeed. There's peace in familiarity.

If the next Secretary General is once another anti-capitalist third world idot from some village in Africa, I'll rent the equipment and push the UN into Turtle Bay myself.

Splash One!

Out.

Apologies for the hasty typo...

Annan's hardly a third world idiot. That's the problem - he's a transnational progressive who went to a (very liberal) Midwestern college.

If he were genuinely some village chieftain or something, we'd probably be in a lot better shape. "Traditional values" and all that.

The UN will be the death of Israel if Israel continues to listen to the UN.

The Assassination of Harari has a lot to do with the future of Lebanon and Syria in an alliance with Palestine to choke Israel to death in the Middle East. And the US knows this evil plan that the UN is trying to cover up by playing the fool.

Syria is the arsenal of the Al Qaida.

With all of the money we give to the United Nations can we please make sure that they get a copy of Adobe Acrobat and learn how to use it?

One More Thing The UN Can't Do: Use MS Word

Posted by: Insider on October 23, 2005 02:39 AM

Good point, Insider, but from what I've heard, the UN hasn't really been keeping up from an IT perspective, making it a less-than-ideal workplace.

As a side note, I remember taking a tour of UN headquarters in NYC a few years ago and I remember thinking back then that it appeared nothing had really been renovated since the building's original construction. While the interior was still reasonably functional, it clearly hadn't been updated in decades.

Not to say that the interior decor sets the tone in an organization, but it certainly was symbolic of the statist times in which the UN HQ was originally built and the socialist leanings which animate it today.

Posted by: EricTheRed21 on October 23, 2005 08:54 AM

The UN is the biggist supporter and aider and abeter of terrorists lets remember that many member countries are those who support terrorists

Posted by: spurwing plover on October 23, 2005 10:16 AM

sp - by that reasoning, the UN is also the biggest opponent of terrorism, since the nations who oppose it are UN members.

That's the problem - the UN is all things to all people, thus it ends up being a big nothing.

Posted by: Knemon on October 23, 2005 03:08 PM

I'm beginning to loose track of UN scandals there's so many now.

I think the public needs a "UN scandal portal" on the net so we can keep all these things sorted out and get our "outrage" properly directed. It would be embarrasing to be outraged about the wrong scandal.

Tucker Carlson Network
@TCNetwork

The people in charge [Jews, of course -- ace] don't want you to know this, but Muslims love Jesus.

Islam reveres Him as a major prophet and messenger of the Lord, believes He performed miracles, and states that He will return to Earth to defeat the Antichrist. That's why Donald Trump's painting depicting himself as the Son of God offended the president of Iran. It was an attack on his religion as well as Christianity.

Trump's trolling tweet was ill-advised, but Tucker is just lying when he claims the Christianity-hating President of Iran was "offended" by this.
He's one step away from announcing his official conversion to Islam. He literally never stops praising Islam. Well, he suddenly became Christian two years ago, there's not much stopping him from converting again.
You can track Tuq'r's official conversion to Islam with this Bingo card.
