Enrviros Sue Navy For Using Sonar; Claim It Confuses Whales And DolphinsYeah. I like whales and dolphins and all, but, ahhhh... (Link at bottom of link-dump post.) Does anyone see a pattern here? Broken record, but: These people cannot get what they want (outlawing war itself) so they are simply determined to make it all but impossible for America to fight a war by outlawing one crucial technology after another. Next up: Jet engines and helicopter blades to be outlawed as "dangerous to the spotted owl." posted by Ace at 01:16 PM
CommentsCorrection: they don't want to outlaw war itself, only the West's or any other Capitalist nation's right to make war. Posted by: Tom on October 20, 2005 01:32 PM
Actually, this is a pretty old issue, and as the article mentions, the Navy is doing a lot of the stuff the enviros already ask for. I'm a bit on the fence here. As far as it can be *proven* that mid-freq sonar does this kind of damage, then I'm actually for some reasonable curbs. After all, if such damage can be avoided in peacetime with some reasonable precautions, why not? Of course, my definition of a reasonable precaution is probably much narrower than what the Greenpeace crowd would sign up to-- obviously, I'm much more inclined to give the Navy whatever it is they say they need. But I don't see a reason to get too holy on this issue. Cheers, Posted by: Dave at Garfield Ridge on October 20, 2005 01:42 PM
So we must shut down our sonar becuase it hurts the whales? why dont the greens stop being so stupid and eat the FREE WILLE video cassttes Posted by: spurwing plover on October 20, 2005 02:59 PM
as cartman says, "thoughtful and intelligent on rye with some mayonaise" Posted by: awesomo bizzochi on October 20, 2005 03:20 PM
They need to change the sonar waveforms so they sound like tunes to the cetaceans. Then the Navy could play DJ to the whales while scouring the ocean for baddies. Posted by: geoff on October 20, 2005 03:41 PM
But what if these dolphins are the nuclear-tipped dolphins that the Navy lost after Katrina? I could see where confusing them might make Greenpeace happy. Posted by: Steve L. on October 20, 2005 04:12 PM
This is a mistake. After years of their bullshit, our Navy finally has those crafty whales and dolphins playing defense and they want us to stop now? Don't let up! We can win this thing. Posted by: Dr. Reo Symes on October 20, 2005 05:16 PM
Don't believe any of this bullshit. Cetacean sonar frequency ranges are way above 20kHz, the high-end of human hearing. Whales' and dolphins' echo-location ranges are up to 200kHz. Man-made low- and mid-freq sonar are below that and within human hearing. Besides, it's the amplitude you have to worry about. One good active "ping" can boil water. "Male dolphins definitely prefer human females. In fact, a recent incident at a Sao Paulo, Brazil, beach reveals an antagonism toward human males. A wild, resident male dolphin, noted for his friendliness toward women swimmers, attacked two human males, who were evidently considered to be romantic competitors. One of the men died from internal hemorrhaging after being butted by the dolphin. The other man received a broken rib..." Sir, They are after our women. This is war. Courage. Funny that you should mention the Spotted Owl. The WaPo just had an article that said the whole brouhaha over logging killing off the spotted owl in the 90s (which ended up nixing 130,000 jobs in Ca, Or and Wa) was basically all wrong. It was a another owl out-competing the Spotted Owls that caused them to disappear, not logging. Just with the hostility to things used in war, the anti-logging groups were motivated more by intrinsic hostility to logging and development rather than actually doing something prudent and useful for the environment. > It was a another owl out-competing the Spotted Owls that caused them to disappear, So oppressive Slobodan owls are launching a genocidal campaign against peace-loving Spotted Owls? I suppose Spotted Owls will get refugee status and I'll have to provide a tree for one in my backyard. And my taxes will go up. Posted by: Bob Hawkins on October 21, 2005 12:20 PM

Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:

I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"

ANOTHER LEFT WING ASSASSIN ATTEMPTS TO KILL TRUMP
If I understand this, the left-wing Democrat assassin attempted to get into the White House Correspondents Association dinner, and was stopped at the magnetometers, which detected his gun. I guess he pulled out the gun and was shot by Secret Service agents. Erika Kirk was present.
