The way to handle PETA protests is to ship in 14year old boys by the busload, preferably from a diversity of ethnic backgrounds and cultures. Each boy could be encouraged to point, hoot, take pictures, grab their crotches, make kissing noises and rude gestures, and generally give these exhibitionists the attention they probably secretly crave.

In fact, I'm surprised there aren't kids scanning PETA websites for alerts about direct action events like this.

Ah, Wikipedia . . . what can't you teach us?

In mulesing, a portion of wrinkly skin is removed from the backside of the sheep, particularly around the anus. This is to prevent fecal matter from clumping and attracting the strike flies.

When the strike flies come in, they first feed off of the sheep in the area with the dung, and then lay their eggs in that area. The sheep thus receive painful bites to their backsides, and then have fly larvae gestate and feed off of them until they are developed.

While there are methods to control flystrike besides mulesing, none of them are considered satisfactory or as effective.

I think I'd rather have part of my butt surgically removed as compared to having flies feed off my butt. And let's acknowledge this: Would the PETA protestors be okay with mulesing if sheep were given anesthetic for the procedure? Chances are . . . no.

Actually, I think that is the compromise they're trying to work out.

Under the agreement with PETA, the Australian Wool Growers Association (AWGA) will seek support from other industry groups for the use of pain relief in all mulesing and for lifting live export standards.

But I gather AGWA is a small group and the industry as a whole objects, for reasons I'm unclear on. Not to lend credibility to PETA or anything. One of the things that most annoys me about PETA is that its presence stains any issue with nudity and nutjobbery. And, on the whole, I'd feel better about my woolly pullover if I thought the sheep got a little novacaine when it was wanted.
