Funniest F'n' Show On TV: Stella

It's goofy, it's stupid, it's absurdist. It's also hysterical.

It's the guys from MTV's good but not great sketch comedy show, The State, and also from one of the funniest movies ever, Wet Hot American Summer. Actually, it's the same sort of comedy, with a lot of the same actors. (And, once in a while, the same bits, too.) Jeneane Garofalo and Paul Rudd from that movie have shown up as guest stars. So has Sam Rockwell, playing the gang's shady dealer of fake moustaches. (They frequently need fake moustaches for their various schemes.)

It's just flat-out silly but I don't think I've laughed as hard or consistently at a show since... well, I don't know when. Since Seinfeld I guess.

It's not for everyone; like Wet Hot American Summer, some think it's hilarious, whereas others think it's just stupid. But check it out on Comedy Central; maybe you'll think it's as funny as I do.

If you like Stella, check out Reno 911. Also created by alumni of the State.

That one's okay too. I caught Stella just because it happened to follow a Reno 911 (the one with Liberace's haunted piano, which was pretty funny).

I liked Michael Ian Black's bit on Reno as a registered sex offender introducing himself to his neighbors.

Stella's really funny though. Reno 911's just kinda funny in bits.

Yo Allah, what on earth is that thing on your site?

Posted by: someone on September 27, 2005 12:33 AM

I need to check out that show. It seems some people either really like it or hate with a passion.

Posted by: yls on September 27, 2005 12:43 AM

Speaking of stupid -
Four freakin' hours after tonight's episode of Arrested Development, I suddenly realized that Dave Thomas' threat to Michael had nothing to do with the Bluth company at all (rather, he was mad at Michael for flirting with his stupid daughter/sister/whatever). Flew right over my head.

Damn. I'm too dumb for a network sitcom.

Also, Bob Loblaw is the greatest name EVER.

Posted by: The Ugly American on September 27, 2005 01:07 AM

hooo-kay.

That's REALLY not safe for work.

It's also not really very representative of the sort of comedy on Stella, which is pretty clean. Well, mostly.

Certainly it never featured anyone masturbating an outrageously well-endowed fish.

Posted by: ace on September 27, 2005 01:25 AM

Mary,

Where are you getting that? I think the plain implication was that Rita was a British spy and Dave Thomas was her higher-up.

Posted by: ace on September 27, 2005 01:26 AM

Ace,

Arg, you're right. I don't even know why I gave it an extra thought (well, okay, I'm TV's bitch), but I put the "how would you like it if someone came after a stupid member of your family?" with the whole private school exchange with Charlize's character which I thought might be odd...and well, came up with a whole overthinking-it mess that doubled up on itself and completely left out that last scene with the obviously spying Dave.

So, yeah. I hope no one reads this.

But hey, did you catch the slogan (Burger King spoof?) "You take it the way I make it" on Saddam's apron?

Posted by: mary on September 27, 2005 01:57 AM

If you wanna smear mud on your ass, smear mud on your ass, just be honest about it.

Look Ace, I've never told anyone this before, but I can suck my own dick, and I do it a lot.

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

Umm... didn't Stella and Reno 911 just finish their seasons? Get with the program Ace.

Also, has anyone tried calling the phone number Dave Thomas showed?

011 44 15747141

It's an int'l call to england and I'm a cheap bastard, but someone out there has to have tried.

Also, the bristish actor's union needs to complain about the hiring of Canadian and South African scabs to play brits.

Oh yeah, Serenity rocked.

Posted by: Kevin on September 27, 2005 02:24 AM

I have an irrational love for Alan Tudyk.

Plus, I too am a cheap bastard.

Posted by: mary on September 27, 2005 02:51 AM

My favorite bit on Stella is how David is always getting dissed by Michael and Michael.

Ex: In the Garolfalo episode when the MM&D wrote a novel and the main characters names were "Michael, Michael and Craig".

Poor David...Stella's little bitch.

That show sucks. Badly. I want to invade wherever they are from it sucks so badly.

Carlos Mencia is the best thing on Comedy Central except for the Pam Anderson roast.

Am I the only one who thinks that Arrested Development just isn't all that funny?

Am I the only one who thinks that Arrested Development just isn't all that funny?

Yes.....You are the only one.

The only thing better than Arreseted Development is Arrested Development with Charliz Theron.

Am I the only one who thinks that Arrested Development just isn't all that funny?

No. No you're not.

I recognize that the show's very smart... very clever... but somehow it never meshes together as 'funny' for me. Just doesn't hold my attention.

Posted by: Dr.ReoSymes on September 27, 2005 11:38 PM

I thought the show was funny, but I think it might have jumped the shark. The last two episodes were kinda sucky.

Posted by: ace on September 28, 2005 12:18 AM

I just don't get the hype about Carlos Mencia. OK, I get it, he says outrageously offensive things. Wasn't that George Carlin's stock in trade from back in the "7 Dirty Words" era?

P.S. Has George Michael gotten it on with his cousin yet? I'm totally out of the AD loop these days.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
