Good (?) News From Iraq: Sunnis Signing Up To Vote In Large Numbers70% registration rate in Fallujah. Powerline sees this as good news. I'm not quite sure. It's good news if Sunnis want to join the political process. If their primary motivation is to scotch the vote on the constitution, however, then they're really only signing up to vote to sabotage the political process. Yes, voting "no" is their right, and that's also "part of the political process." But many Sunnis seem to think that rule is their right, and they will attempt to undermine any effort to create a permanent government in which they are not made the masters of Iraq for all eternity. I suspect that most Sunnis signing up to vote are only doing so to try to tank the constitution and thereby keep Iraq in a state of chaos and flux, hoping that somehow everyone will agree to put them back in charge. posted by Ace at 02:23 PM
CommentsI can always count on you for those important questions. Thanks! Posted by: yls on September 26, 2005 03:12 PM
Ace: you are probably right about that, but if the Sunnis get enough of a vote to veto the constitution, all it means is that they will have to start over and draft a new one, after new elections are held in December. The Sunnis probably WILL try to derail the constitution so they will have chance to get a bigger turnout in the next election and have a bigger voice in parliament afterwards - not necessarily a bad thing IF we can convince them that peaceful negotiation will get them more than supporting terrorism. The way to do that is to: Posted by: BattleofthePyramids on September 26, 2005 03:30 PM
I agree. But this means they've bought into the whole 'voting' thing, and won't have excuses the next drafting round (if one's needed). Posted by: someone on September 26, 2005 04:40 PM
What I'm more worried about is what happens if they are simply voting to derail the constitution and they fail. They may completely jump ship on the political process. Or, they could end up like the Democrats, only instead of whining endlessly about stolen elections and demonizing the winners, they'll resume the bombings and assassinations. What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals. The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite. Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
