Happy Thoughts to Begin Your Week

Michael Ledeen paints a grim picture of our Iranian non-policy.

Money graphs:

The mullahs are altogether capable of deciding that events are now running strongly in their favor, and that they should strike directly at the United States. They look at us, and they see a deeply divided nation, a president who talked a lot about bringing democratic revolution to Iran and then did nothing to support it, a military that is clearly fighting in Iraq alone, and counting the days until we can say "it’s up to the Iraqis now," and — again based on what they see in our popular press — a country that has no stomach for a prolonged campaign against the remaining terror masters in Iran, Syria, and Saudi Arabia.

Osama bin Laden came to similar conclusions, and ordered the events of 9/11. Why should the Iranians — who have been major supporters of the terror network ever since the 1979 revolution — not do the same?

Sad to say, I don't think we as a nation have the stomach for the fight to come, at least until something happens to get our attention again. I just fear the cost of that attention-getter.

Side note: Mr. Ledeen makes an excellent point about the press. Our enemies are always watching, and when they see the MSM constantly harping on problems, difficulties, and slagging Bush for the smallest of things about Iraq and never giving credit or showing positives, our enemies are encouraged. Thanks, MSM!

It's not just the Mullahs watching, it's the Iranian on the street who would like to get out from under the Mullah's oppression too. How well we tough it out in Iraq will determine for them whether or not they can depend on us to help them if decide to try to make changes on their own or if they are willing to help us if we have to go into Iran ourselves. That applies to the rest of the people of the Middle East and everywhere else people are considering democracy. The press and the left are against us winning, I think not out of ideology as much as fear of a conservative accomplishing something liberals have failed so miserably at. If we lose it'll be lost here, not there.

I wonder how hard it would be to coordinate a
"no MSM day."
Don't buy a paper, don't get a magazine, cancel your subscriptions, don't turn on the TV. Just for that one day.

Maybe if we demonstrate we're not buying, they'll stop selling.
That, and buying shares of stock at media companies and pitching fits at shareholder meetings....

vivi--

We're not buying now. Readership and viewship of MSM outlets is low and/or dropping. They don't care.

I'd rather see a constant drumbeat of on-topic messages from the Right--more democracy, more free markets, more support of our friends overseas, less government intrusion. The Right has to move from one goal to the next, always moving forward, never falling back to punt or play defensive games.

The Left handles confrontation poorly. They can't generate much more than protests full of lunatics which doesn't convince anybody not already in their camp. Their arguments are specious. The Right must have the courage of their convictions and never swerve off-message. This isn't a debate between equally-matched sides: it's one side with ideas vs. another side with nothing but slogans.

Hey guys, remeber when Evan Thomas, the Assistant Managing Editor of Newsweek, said that media support would be worth 15 points for Kerry.
Think about it.
These are the same people attacking our war effort against the Islamicists. Figure they give the same 15 points to the anti-war types.
The American people have the stomache to do the hard work of winning against terrorists, its our elites who don't.
We could take on the Iranians, if the administration had the guts to bypass the press and go straight to the people.
We know the Iranians are directly supporting the terrorists in Iraq. We know they are directly responsible for the deaths of Americans. We know they support terrorists throughout the war, and provide sanctuary to those who have attacked us in the past. All of these are acts of war.
I don't think it'd be as easy as Ledeen thinks it could be, as I think the jihadists would go all out to help Iran, but it'd would be a dacapitating blow to the worldwide jihadist movement. And we're gonna have to do it sooner or later, so we may as well start now.
At least we should start sending special forces in to help Iranian opposition groups cause trouble. Turnabout's fair play.

I'm not buying and I'm not watching. Circulation is down significantly for major papers. I read that they were lying about it to their advertisers. I expected arrests for fraud, but alas, it was not to be.

Not only are the mad mullahs getting encouragment from the MSM, they are also getting talking points.

"Pvt. Katrina" indeed

The money shot:

...a friend of mine who knows a great deal about the affairs of banks in the Persian Gulf tells me there is an unprecedented flow of private money out of Iran to places like Dubai, Abu Dabhi, and Qatar...
When the proletariat starts voting with its feet you're in trouble.

THIS is what I suspect the Bush administration is hoping for -- that the horse race between collapse/revolution and the US having to do a major military kinda thing again swings towards the collapse.

Will they go down quietly like the Soviet Union though? I think this crew is a LOT more crazed than the old Soviet aparatchicks were.

The best thing they could do is be little angles and continue to show enough cooperation with non-proliferation talks to keep the liberals in talking points. The fact is that we have a President who isn't afraid to call the Pentagon if it needs calling. If the mullah's are smart they know that too. If they push our buttons by lauching any kind of attack, that just give W an excuse to open up a can of whup ass.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
