Kanye West Swipes Shirley Bassey's Diamonds Are Forever

I have mild curiosity about how it sounds, because really, DAF was one of the worst Bond themes. That British tosser did a much better job sampling a much better theme, Nancy Sinatra's haunting You Only Live Twice.

But here's where I don't get. In the old, old days, black rappers could swipe hooklines and such with abandon, because WPWL (white people with lawyers) weren't listening. Now rap is the country's biggest or second-biggest genre of music, and we've seen rappers sued for unauthorized sampling. Vanilla Ice, of course, got nailed bigtime for his complete swipe of the hook from Under Pressure. (Note to Oliver Willis: He's white and not especially articulate.)

So, in 2005, what the hell is this idiot Kanye West doing stealing from Shirley Bassey without so much as contacting her lawyer beforehand?

Is he dumber than I thought?

I just think it's sort of funny that Kanye West hasn't heard of the various lawsuits, Rolling Stones suing the Verve Pipe, all the others.

Kanye West

He doesn't care about white people. Or about the Man's oppressive rules about "intellectual property rights" and "copyright infringement." Those are just white-people code for "a new slavery."

The Stones sued the Verve, not the Verve Pipe. Verve Pipe was a shitty American pop/rock outfit. The Verve was a British band with that anorexic junkie-looking singer.

Posted by: Allah on September 22, 2005 11:34 AM

How about k.d.lang suing the Stones?

Posted by: Sharp as a Marble on September 22, 2005 11:37 AM

If intellectual property rights and copright laws can be ignored, does that mean that I can copy and sell HIS work without attribution? Or permission?

Posted by: rabidfox on September 22, 2005 11:39 AM

How about Dr. Dre stealing George Luca's signature sound?

I think we're forgetting the truly tragic aspect of Kanye's odyssey. He wasn't going off script that night because he hates W, he wasn't looking flustered and nervous because of his passion or his anger...it was something else:

Kanye can't read.

Adult illteracy is a serious problem. See his interview on Ellen a few days later for further proof.

And his inability to contact a lawyer re: licesnsing? Just one more desperate cry for help...

Love the new all-italics look there Acey Boy!

NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please turn it off. It hurts us.

"I don’t want to be the 'voice of black America' because quite frankly I’m not."

Frankly "Voice of Black America" does seem a bit ambitious for you, Mr. Willis.

How about being the voice of black Filet-o-fish-addicted America?

Am I the only one who's not surprised Mr. Willis has heard the phrase "stuck on stupid" many times before now?

Posted by: Nicholas Kronos on September 22, 2005 11:50 AM

The Verve was a British band with that anorexic junkie-looking singer.

Thanks for narrowing the field, Moon God.

Posted by: Ollie-Baba on September 22, 2005 12:08 PM

Copyright laws cut both ways, as the late George Harrison could tell you.

"My Sweet Lord" = "He's So Fine".

Or was it OK that the rich white guy stole the hook from the black girl band, Kanye?

Italics closure brought to you by Dr. Reo Symes.

You mean Ace is still too drunk to self-edit?

Posted by: on September 22, 2005 12:31 PM

How come when a white guy borrows it's sampling and when a black guy does it, it's stealing?

Posted by: rakmjn1 on September 22, 2005 12:55 PM

Wait a second, Ace-- you're not telling me that you believe that Vanilla Ice lifted that hook?

Why, I saw him on Arsenio Hall arguing that he was innocent.

See, "Under Pressure" goes "Dun dun dun dun DA DA dun dun. . . dun dun dun dun DA DA dun dun." But Ice's rocking beat goes "Dun dun dun dun DA DA dun dun tsts. . . dun dun dun dun DA DA dun dun tsts. . . "

Why, it's so obvious, even Frank Gorshin could see it.

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

Kanye sure seems to be doing his damnedest to distance himself from that "smartest man in pop music" title that was recently bestowed upon him.

Posted by: Sean M. on September 22, 2005 01:00 PM

Is he dumber than I thought?

For the smartest guy in something or other, he seems pretty stuck on stupid....

Harrison stole the whole Hari Krishna thing from me, but then I stole it from Joseph Smith.

Comedian: Yo, check this out: black guys drive a car like this. [Leans back, as though his elbow were on the windowsill] Do, do, ch. Do-be-do, do-be-do-be-do. Yeah, but white guys, see, they drive a car like this. [Hunches forward, talks nasally] Dee-da-dee,-dee-da-dee-da-dee-da-dee.

Homer: Ah ha ha, it's true, it's true! We're so lame!

Posted by: on September 22, 2005 01:24 PM

He probably considers it "reparations" for the black bluesmen who were conned into signing away their rights with an "X" on the dotted line in exchange for a bottle of gin and a hooker, and whose songs later became huge hits by the Stones, Led Zeppelin, Clapton, et al.

Posted by: Alex on September 22, 2005 01:56 PM

The song sounds pretty good. What annoyed me (before his latest racism) is the video - he shows these children of Sierra Leone dying in mines so that these laughing rich white people can have their "blood diamonds." A rich white woman's hand winds up covered in bloof when she tries one on, for example.

Apparently, Kanye is unaware of the irony that the biggest per household consumers of diamonds in the world are hip hop stars.

Hey racist, diamond teeth, bling and pinky-rings do not count!

Forget Hubbards Peak, it would appear we have long past a talent peak (we can call it Ace's Peak cause that sounds cool when you say it really fast)!

At the theater his was the year of the remake. I blogged last year that in music there is a known limited supply of musical notes (unlike unknown quantities of things like, say, oil) and it would appear that we have seen the day the music died TDTMD:

I believe we are experiencing TDTMD already and it is most evident in hip hop, (which is another reason I don't like hip hop) - after all if a top hit could be sung by Tevia as easily as Gwen Steffani there is a serious problem (see Rich Girl right out of Fiddler on the Roof!)

Now it is very possible that we haven't yet reached TDTMD, it may be that it is just easier to reuse the old music and takes less talent, energy, and effort to recycle the old standards. That is possible, but come on - old Police songs, Austin Powers themes (including evil lines from the movie), Martika's Toy Soldiers, Mockingbird with MM's own twist and backing da da da da da da da of 3 or 4 notes that is used to make it sound new - aren't these clear signs that, if we aren't at TDTMD yet, then we are clearly approaching it quickly!

This new Kayne song is more proof that either we have used up all the available music and have to recycle old stuff or today's entertainers are truly lazy untalented hacks!

Bloggers work harder then Kayne!

I've heard the opening strings riff for "You Only Live Twice" in an R&B song, couldn't tell you which one or by who though.

FWIW, although Bassey was born in Wales, her father was a Nigerian sailor. West isn't even stealing from "the Man", but from a black woman.

The Kanye song sucks but the remix with Jay Z is awesome, probably my favorite song from last summer. I'll send it to you.

It was probably "Millennium" by Robbie Williams.

So when is the Supremes going to sue Bono-Head over "Vertigo?"

I'd pay good money to watch that fake being taken to the wood shed.

How about when John Fogerty got sued for plagairizing his own song?

Next on Fox: WHEN 'THE MAN' SUES...'THE MAN'.

I still can't stop listening to the remix: "George Bush don't like black people"

Honestly I believe he is making a point. Unfortunately, he is pointing at the wrong thing. Its patents that he should be pointing at.

I believe that you should hold rights over your creation (things such as music, characters, games, etc) but I do not thing that you should hold rights over technology or systems that can improve the average living of all human beings.

Patents, which purposely hold back improvements to society so certain groups continue to make profits, are wrong. Alternative fuel sources, non-pollutant solutions, improved transportation systems, improved medical treatment and so forth.

Our for profit and me me me society is downright shameful.

Posted by: AlanB on September 26, 2005 10:43 PM

Invention is an expensive enterprise. Nobody is going to invent things if they aren't going to profit, Alan. They want to be paid for all that time, wasted materials, sweat and ingenuity. And, really, we owe it to them. Who else is going to do it for free?

How long can you keep an expensive enterprise going, if you foot the bill yourself? And who will invest their money towards your research, if they know you are just going to give the results away?

That is charity. Totally different. If you leave invention to charity, you will get no progress at all.

They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
